Some days ago, during my trip from Idaho to California, I had an opportunity to visit Elko, today the most important city on the I-80 between Salt Lake City, Utah and Reno, Nevada.
Algunos días atrás, durante mi viaje de Idaho a California, tuve oportunidad de visitar Elko, hoy la ciudad más importante sobre la autopista Interstatal 80, entre Salt Lake City, en Utah, y Reno, en Nevada.

Sherman Station tells its history
Sherman Station cuenta su historia
Elko is located in the northeastern corner of the state of Nevada, situated on the Humboldt River halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City.
Elko está ubicado en el ángulo noreste del estado de Nevada, situado sobre el río Humboldt, a mitad de camino entre Reno y Salt Lake City.

During the nineteenth century, Elko grew on the Great Basin at an elevation of 5,060 feet, in the most difficult part of the journey to California.

More than 250,000 travelers including explorers and adventurers, the rich and the poor, families, fugitives and gold rushers crossed the Great Basin on the road to California.

Some of these travelers decided to build their new homes in different valleys of the Great Basin, near one of the richest gold mines of the world.

In 1875, Valentine and Sophie Walther arrived from Bavaria, Europe to Sherman Creek in the Huntington Valley, 60 miles south of Elko.

Years later, Valentine Walther built a two-story home. Valentine and his friends worked three years cutting the timber and built the largest log house in Nevada.

The complex of Sherman Station included stable, creamery, schoolhouse, building for the carriages and a blacksmith shop.

Between 1995 and 1999, the old Sherman Station was relocated to Elko downtown where today is home of the Elko Chamber of Commerce.

Despite the time, the structures of the house and the materials reflect the efforts of Valentine Walther to plan his home and select the best wood cut from mountain forests of Nevada.

Hello! Today I have something very different to share with you through this Sunday Bilingual News issue.

Last week, I traveled from the Teton Valley to San Francisco, California driving a car through the south of Idaho, Utah, Nevada and California approximately 1100 miles.

Desert, rocks, dust, salt… - Desierto, rocas, polvo, sal…

When you begin a journey on Interstate 80 from the Great Salt Lake in Utah, all are surprises. Big signs alert “no services” you will see for miles and miles… Your eyes only see big white extensions of salt… No houses, no animals… The traffic of cars and trucks is reduced. On the horizon, naked ranges of mountains complete the scenery.

Cuando usted comienza su viaje en la autopista Interestatal 80 desde el Gran Lago Salado en Utah, todo son sorpresas. Grandes señales alertan que usted no va encontrar servicios por millas y millas…Sus ojos sólo ven grandes extensiones blancas de sal… No casas, no animales… El tráfico de automóviles y camiones es reducido. On the border between Utah and Nevada, a complex of casinos and gaming resources shows the entrance to a new territory. After several miles, all are rocks, dust and desert. But you can perceive something is behind this hard scenery.

In the last days, the media remembers the “Declaration of Independence” of the United States. A journalist defined that historic document as a “National Treasure”. From my point of view, the “Declaration of Independence” is not only a “National Treasure”. It means more… It is the “Foundation” of the nation. It belongs to the “life” of the country and its institutions, to the people who came to America looking for the land of “Liberty”, and for current and next generations who also will pursue the ideals of freedom… We can disagree with some political actions of the past or the present... But, about the “Declaration of Independence” of the United States, we have to be proud that a lot of the democracies of the world inspired themselves with this historic document and in the principles of the French Revolution.

En los últimos días, la prensa ha recordado la "Declaración de la Independencia" de los Estados Unidos. Un periodista definió aquel histórico documento como un "Tesoro Nacional". Desde mi punto de vista, la "Declaración de la Independencia" no es solamente un "Tesoro Nacional". Significa más... Es la "Fundación" de la nación. Pertenece a la "vida" del país y sus instituciones, a la gente que llegó a America buscando la tierra de la "Libertad", y a las actuales y futuras generaciones que también persigan los ideales de libertad... Nosotros podemos estar en desacuerdo con algunas acciones políticas del pasado o del presente... Pero, acerca de la "Declaración de la Independencia" de los Estados Unidos, nosotros tenemos que sentirnos orgullosos que muchas democracias del mundo se inspiraron ellas mismas en este histórico documento y en los principios de la Revolución Francesa.

What horses feel? ¿Qué sienten los caballos?

It was a very cold day of winter. I was driving through the Teton Valley. All were white around me. The snow covered also the route. Neither samples of green, nor signs of life were possible to see. The sky showed dark shadows and unfriendly clouds. Awful scene in the middle of nothing...Fue un día muy frío de invierno. Yo manejaba a través del Valle Tetón. Todo era blanco alrededor mío. La nieve cubría también la ruta. No era posible ver ni muestras de verde, ni signos de vida. El cielo presentaba oscuras sombras y nubes amenazantes. Pasmosa escena en el medio de la nada…

Suddenly on a side of my track, I saw a small group of animals frozen from the terrible climate conditions. I stopped the vehicle and I went out… It was not fiction. Three horses stood next to the fence of a field with their eyes also frozen in the white horizon.
De repente, al borde del camino, vi un pequeño grupo de animales congelados por las terribles condiciones climáticas. Detuve el vehículo y fui afuera… No era ficción. Tres caballos estaban parados en el borde de la valla de un campo con sus miradas heladas en el blanco horizonte.

I couldn’t less than touch with my warm hands the heads of these poor animals. I had never before felt that sort of connection with any horse. I read something about the attitude of the horses with humans, but I didn’t realize these animals can understand gestures of friendship from a human being in those circumstances. They immediately reacted... They moved their bodies and said me: "Thank you!"
No pude menos que tocar con mis cálidas manos las cabezas de esos pobres animales. Nunca antes había sentido esa clase de acercamiento con algún caballo. Había leído a veces acerca de la actitud de los caballos con los humanos, pero nunca pensé que esos animales pudieran entender gestos de amistad de un ser humano en aquellas circunstancias. Ellos inmediatamente reaccionaron… Ellos movieron sus cuerpos y me dijeron: “¡Gracias!”

After that, I passed at different time the same field. Always when I stopped my car and go out, the same three horses came over the fence with special feelings to say me: “Hello!”

All my life, I thought horses do not understand human beings. I believed they only have cognitive skills for their two-way communication with a rider or owner.

My recent experience shows me that horses feel trust and accept humans with friendly attitude when they see we try to communicate with them without force, without violence, peaceful.

Can IBM improve my Dad’s chocolates?

When I was a child, my father had a chocolate’s factory. He used secret recipes to improve the taste and the quality of the chocolates. He worked for hours in his laboratory and after that all the customers ate his products in seconds.

Cuando yo era chico, mi padre tenía una fábrica de chocolates. El usaba fórmulas químicas para mejorar el sabor y la calidad de los chocolates. Trabajaba por horas en su laboratorio y después todos sus clientes comían sus productos en segundos.

But sometimes my father felt disappointed for the quality of the cocoa beans, the key ingredient of the chocolates. He always wanted the best quality. In those circumstances, the cocoa provider answered: “Sorry, the last cocoa crop was bad”.

As consequence, my dad’s chocolate always will have better ingredients, and you and I will never say: “No!” to the sweet temptation.

A wild flower tells about itself…
Una flor silvestre habla acerca de ella misma…




The springtime and the summer’s arrival changed the colors of the landscape in the Teton Valley. First, it was all brown with green spots. After that, the field turned green with yellow spots. Next, everything changed again. The last picture looks like a “pastel” of a famous painter with a mix of yellow and green colors and small brown spots.
La primavera y la llegada del verano cambiaron los colores del paisaje en el Valle Tetón. Primero, fue todo marrón con manchones de verde. Después, el campo se tornó verde con manchones de amarillo. A continuación todo cambió de nuevo. La nueva fotografía luce como un “pastel” de un pintor famoso con una mezcla de colores amarillos y verdes y pequeñas manchas marrones.

Who is the protagonist? Its name is dandelion, a wild plant with yellow flowers and notched leaves that bloom in the spring. It has a high reproductive potential. It has the ability to reproduce itself in large numbers.
¿Quién es el protagonista? Su nombre es diente de león, una planta silvestre con flores amarillas y hojas con muescas que florece en primavera. Tiene alto potencial reproductivo. Tiene la habilidad de reproducirse a si mismo en grandes cantidades.




Normally, a dandelion plant has 3, 4 or more flowers with a lot of seeds. It has the potential for producing several hundreds new dandelion plants. This is the reason that all is yellow and green during the warm days in the valley.
Normalmente, un diente de león tiene 3, 4 o más flores con muchas semillas. Tiene el potencial de producir varios cientos de nuevas plantas dientes de león. Esta es la razón por la cual todo es amarillo y verde durante los cálidos días del valle.

Now, dandelion feels proud… It says “Nobody care for a wild yellow plant, all the people look the red roses. Who will give a dandelion to his lover? This is truth, but the roses cannot live without lovers and romantics. Nobody gives me water. The people and dogs walk on me… Nobody caresses my petals, nobody touches my leaves, nobody turns his/her eyes to my yellow corolla, but everybody lives with me, with my yellow and green because I grow faster next the rough and hard border of stones. In the springtime I am the winner. ”
Ahora, diente de león se siente orgulloso… Él dice: “- Nadie se interesa por una planta silvestre amarilla, todos miran las rosas rojas. ¿Quién le va a dar a su amante un diente de león? Eso es verdad, pero las rosas no viven sin amantes y románticos. Nadie me da agua. The dandelion is different from other flowers. It has the capacity to close its petals during the night and sleep relaxed for the next sunny day. And during the winter, it remains hidden maybe in between two stones and under the white cover of snow waiting better times to return to the light of the sun. Nobody will plant dandelions in the arrival of spring. It will grow again for itself with high concentration in the corner of the patio of the houses, or the road, with the same pride, with the same yellow flowers.
Diente de léon es diferente de otras flores. Tiene la capacidad de cerrar sus pétalos durante la noche y dormir relajado para la siguiente día con sol. Y durante el invierno, permanece escondido tal vez entre dos piedras o debajo de la cubierta blanca de nieve esperando tiempos mejores para retornar a la luz del sol. Nadie plantará dientes de león al arribo de la primavera. Nuevamente crecerá por si mismo en alta concentración, en el borde del patio de las casas, o del camino, con el mismo orgullo, con las mismas flores amarillas.
