Hello! Welcome to a new edition of Sunday Bilingual News! From the last week, we have plenty of raw materials to create a masterpiece like the “Inferno” of Dante. The last few days were was very rich in emblematic issues that exceeded the normal news of prior seven-day periods.

From the dusty lands of the Southern Afghanistan to Blair House in Washington, the week showed a puzzle of events and facts that came with roots in others events and subjects from the last months and the last years:

News events of these four subjects and others like the rumors that Intel was another victim of the last December Chinese cyber attacks, all together really gives us more than enough material to write a story that we could title: “Perfect Trip to the Inferno”.

In the fourteenth century, the famous Italian writer Dante Alighieri wrote an epic poem titled Divine Comedy that includes a very original description of hell called by him: Inferno.

En el siglo catorce, el famoso escritor italiano Dante Alighieri escribió un poema épico titulado La Divina Comedia que incluye una descripción muy original del infierno llamado por él: Inferno.

Across his writing, Dante explains different sins linked with the beliefs of the people of the Renaissance. All his explanations look like a journey of the soul of human beings toward God.

Thousands of years after the first Inferno, its framework gives us pictures that look like a mirror of where we are living now with violence like what is happening around the Moshtarak operation.

Next, Toyota’s case opened a lot of questions about the ethic principles of the big corporations. As all we know, Mr. Akio Toyoda, grandson of the founder of the Toyota’s empire, cried in front of his own American’s employees after his emotional apology testifying in the US Congress to justify that it was not intentional that his company sold defective products that ended with taking American’s lives a long distance away from the place where the Japanese engineers crafted their famous Corollas or Prius.

Unfortunately, despite the positive initiative of President Obama and the practical draft of Senator Lamar Alexander’s proposition, all again came to a total void of solutions.

En más noticias, el jueves, 25 de febrero, el Presidente Obama invitó a líderes republicanos y demócratas del Congreso a la Cumbre de Blair House para encontrar un arreglo entre los partidos acerca de la reforma de salud. About the new frustration of the health care problem, the Friday’s editorial of New York Times said: “The main lesson to draw from Thursday’s health care forum is that differences between Democrats and Republicans are too profound to be bridged.”

We can agree the differences of politicians frequently put barriers to the solution of common issues of the country. We understand also, that everybody has the right to make mistakes. But when we put together all these issues as a trip with different steps, behind the scene, we see similar pictures of the Inferno of Dante with cases of fraud, violence, treachery, and with communication problems between brothers and friends. A lot of thinkers agree in these chaotic moments, that lack of communication helps the sins grow everywhere. But we have to try to avoid the entrance to the last circle, the vestibule of the Inferno, where the hot flames of hell will destroy us.

Nosotros podemos acordar que las diferencias de los políticos frecuentemente ponen barreras para la solución de asuntos comunes del país. Podemos entender también que todos tienen el derecho de equivocarse. Pero cuando nosotros ponemos junto todos estos asuntos como en un viaje de diferentes paradas, detrás de la escena, nosotros vemos similares imágenes al Infierno de Dante con casos de fraude, violencia, traición, y con problemas de comunicación entre hermanos y amigos. Muchos pensadores están de acuerdo que en momentos caóticos, la falta de comunicación ayuda a que los pecados crezcan por todas partes. Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! This Sunday February 21 is a difficult day to make a good analysis of the last week because the economic, social and political environments are not improving.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a una nueva comunicación del Spanish-English Club! Este domingo 21 de febrero es un día difícil para hacer un buen análisis de la última semana porque los ambientes económicos, sociales y políticos no están mejorando.

A national human resources agency with expertise in job searching said there are more than 15 million people fighting for no more than 2 million positions.

Una agencia nacional de recursos humanos con experiencia en búsquedas de trabajo dijo que hay más de 15 millones de personas luchando por no más de 2 millones de posiciones.

Different political analysts recognize the crisis inside the US Congress is making the situation worse. Time Magazine wrote “Washington is frozen”. And the Editor of this publication, Richard Stengel, added: “Republicans, Democrats and independents can agree on one thing: the government is broken”.

The gap between the political speech and reality is growing dangerously. Indiana Senator Evan Bayh who will not seek re-election in the US Senate next November stated details of the intimacy in the aisles of Congress that show there is not an open dialogue between Republicans and Democrats in the most important legislative group in the country.

We have to remember a Russian professor of international politics in the beginning of 2009 said the United States will break in pieces between 2010 and 2011 if its leaders and people continue on their current path.

Also we have to add it is not only the gap between Republicans and Democrats, the current crisis it is more deep and complex. Our institutions – in the majority of the Western countries – have lost the respect for others and they believe the collapse is far away, but if we return our eyes to the unemployment drama, a big number of job advertisements are false. The employers lie when they offer jobs that are not real, and the discrimination continues in different ways. Additionally, the big companies push our people to the street while they buy from China – the country of the Internet hackers – till the last screw. In the meantime, the Chinese regime continues playing with the low value of its currency - the yuan - to earn more businesses and learn more knowledge from the Western civilization.

También nosotros tenemos que agregar que no es sólo el vacío entre republicanos y demócratas, la actual crisis es aún más profunda y compleja. Nuestras instituciones – en la mayoría de los países occidentales – han perdido el respeto por los otros y creen que el colapso está lejano, pero si volvemos nuestras miradas al drama del desempleo, un gran número de avisos de trabajos es falso. Los empleadores mienten cuando ofrecen trabajos que no son reales, y la discriminación continúa en diferentes formas. Además, las grandes compañías empujan a nuestra gente hacia la calle mientras compran de China – el país de los piratas de Internet – hasta el último tornillo. Mientras tanto, el régimen chino continúa jugando con el bajo valor de su moneda – el yuan – para ganar más negocios y aprender más conocimientos de la civilización occidental.

In this opportunity we appointed two positive issues to remark in this Sunday Bilingual News:
1) In the Winter Olympics of Vancouver, the American athletes are making it a very good job and winning important medals. The Games are going into the second week of competition.
2) According to press sources, the NATO offensive in Southern Afghanistan continue showing the professional work of elite troops to take the area from the insurgents, but its very difficult operation because the rebels are camouflaged within the civilian population and it is not easy to know who is a bad guy or a local inhabitant.

En esta oportunidad nosotros apuntamos dos positivos asuntos para remarcar en este Sunday Bilingual News:
1) En los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno de Vancouver, los atletas americanos están haciendo un muy buen trabajo y están ganando importantes medallas. Los Juegos entran en la segunda semana de la competencia.
2) De acuerdo con fuentes de prensa, la ofensiva de la NATO en el sur de Afganistán continúa mostrando un trabajo profesional de tropas selectas para tomar el área de los insurgentes, pero es un muy difícil operación porque los rebeldes están camuflados entre la población civil y no es fácil conocer quien es un enemigo o un habitante local.

In a critical moment when the members of the US Congress have difficulties working together, as a body and the differences among politicians are growing, perhaps it could help to re-read the Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior In Company and Conversation written by George Washington, one of the Founders of the Nation. They were published by Beaver Press, 1971.

En un momento crítico cuando los miembros del Congreso de los Estados Unidos tienen dificultades trabajando juntos, como un cuerpo y las diferencias entre políticos están creciendo, tal vez podría ayudar el releer las Reglas de Cortesía y Conducta Decente en Compañía y Conversación escritas por Jorge Washington, uno de los Fundadores de la Nación. Ellas fueron publicadas por Beaver Press, en 1971.

The complete list includes 110 rules, some of them now are archaic but the whole spirit remains as the code of conduct for politicians and members of the government, and for everybody who cannot maintain a good dialogue with people who confront each other with different ideas, political goals, and cultural roots.

La lista completa incluye 110 reglas, algunas de las cuales ahora son antiguas pero su espíritu en conjunto permanece como el código de conducta para políticos y miembros del gobierno, y para todos quienes no pueden mantener un buen diálogo con gente con la que se enfrentan unos a otros por diferentes ideas, objetivos políticos y raíces culturales.

By age sixteen, George Washington had copies made by hand the 110 rules about the behavior when we meet other people, in particular when we don’t like the others for different reasons. Originally, these rules were composed by French Jesuits in 1595. Till now, these rules remain as a very interesting contribution from one of the Fathers of the Nation.

Por la edad de los dieciséis, Jorge Washington había copiado a mano las 110 reglas acerca de la conducta cuando nosotros nos encontramos con otra gente, en particular cuando no nos gustan los otros por diferentes razones. Originariamente, estas reglas fueron compiladas por los jesuitas franceses en 1595. Hasta ahora, estas reglas permanecen como una muy interesante contribución de uno de los Padres de la Nación.

The first rule wrote for George Washington says: “Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect, to those who are present”. After that he adds: “Show nothing to your friend that may affright him”.

La primera regla escrita por Jorge Washington dice: “Cada acción hecha en compañía debe ser con algún signo de respeto hacía quienes están presentes.” Después él agrega: “No muestre a su amigo lo que puede espantar o asustar a él.”

About a possible enemy or people distant from us, Washington says: “Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another though he was your enemy”.

Acerca de un posible enemigo o una persona distante de nosotros, Washington dice: “No se muestre usted contento por la desgracia de otro aunque él haya sido su enemigo.”

He doesn’t blame the persons who made their best but without success: “When a man does all he can though it succeeds not well blame not him that did it”. And he asks respect including for who are punished for a crime: “When you see a crime punished, you may be inwardly pleased, but always show pity to the suffering offender.”

Él no culpa a las personas quienes hicieron lo mejor pero sin éxito: “Cuando un hombre hace todo lo que él puede aunque sin éxito, no culpe a él por lo hecho.” Y el pide respeto incluso por quien está siendo castigado por un crimen: "Cuando usted ve que un crimen es castigado, usted puede internamente sentirse a gusto, pero siempre debe mostrar compasión por el sufriente culpable."

In summary, the concept of civility of George Washington continues to be valid and could help to make more harmonic the work between friends or enemies avoiding personal attacks, rudeness, and aggressive behaviors.

Hello! Welcome to the new Sunday Bilingual News! Today is an unusual day. If we look at the 2010 calendar, we find many celebrations one after the other. First, February 14 is a very special day for friends and lovers. Maybe the coldness of the winter and the economic problems freeze our brains. But never could the cold temperature and the economy freeze the heart of human beings filled with passion and feelings. Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day on which lovers and friends express their feelings for each others with nice cards and gifts.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos al nuevo Sunday Bilingual News! Hoy es un día poco común. Si miramos en el calendario 2010, encontramos muchas celebraciones una después de la otra. Primero, el 14 de febrero es un día muy especial para amigos y amantes. Quizás el frío del invierno y los problemas económicos congelen el cerebro. Pero nunca podrían las temperaturas frías y la economía congelar el corazón de los seres humanos lleno de pasión y sentimientos. El Día de San Valentín es tradicionalmente un día en el cual amantes y amigos expresan sus sentimientos los unos por los otros con agradables tarjetas y regalos.

Next is Monday February 15, Presidents Day. Every year, on the third Monday of February is celebrated Washington’s Birthday. They both are a federal holiday in the United States when we remember all the presidents of the country.

Después es el lunes 15 de febrero, el Día de los Presidentes. Cada año, en el tercer lunes de febrero se celebra el nacimiento de Washington. En los Estados Unidos es un feriado federal y es cuando además se recuerdan a todos los presidentes del país.

Last week was the second time in the winter season that a big snowstorm hit Washington DC and all the East Cost from Virginia to Connecticut. The blizzard left thousands of houses without power and a lot of Government offices were closed for more than three days. The nature phenomenon again generated some polemic questions: Was this storm an effect of global warming in a reverse sense? What will happen in similar circumstances if the terrorists make an attack when the government buildings and the capital of the country are immobile because the absence of public transportation, utilities, and without sufficient resources to clean the main routes and maintain the critical services of Washington DC?

La última semana fue la segunda vez en la temporada del invierno que una gran tormenta de nieve golpeó a Washington DC y a toda la costa del este desde Virginia hasta Connecticut. La ventisca dejó miles de casas sin energía eléctrica y muchas oficinas del Gobierno estuvieron cerradas por más de tres días. El fenómeno natural generó algunas polémicas preguntas: ¿Fue esta tormenta efecto del recalentamiento de la tierra en un sentido inverso? ¿Qué sucederá en circunstancias similares si los terroristas hacen un ataque cuando los edificios gubernamentales y toda la capital del país están inmóviles por la ausencia de transporte público, servicios, y sin los recursos suficientes para limpiar las rutas principales y mantener los servicios críticos de Washington DC?

When part of the activities returned to Washington, on Friday, the snow covered with a white blanket a broad area of the south from South Carolina to Texas, also getting to north Florida.

On Saturday, February 13th, thousands of troops from the United States, NATO, and Afghan solders began the Moshtarak operation, a strong offensive again Taliban militants in one of the most important bastions of the insurgency in the Afghan country. According to press sources, after midnight Saturday, infantrymen landed in waves of helicopters inside Marjah, a town controlled by Taliban rebels. On Thursday February 11, Motorola announced it is targeting the first quarter of 2011 for an important split of the company in two parts. It is not the first cut of the organization of this technology enterprise during the last decade.

Meanwhile, the first group that includes the mobile phones business will have to fight against stronger competitors in a very unstable environment. This situation puts a big question about the future uncertainty of all that remain standing from the original organization.

Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Sunday morning at 6.30 am was cold in Florida, but without big problems for the runners and for those who walk fast...It is nice to walk when the 99% of the drivers of luxury cars and smart-phones in their ears are still sleeping. From the moment we came back to Florida we are seeing a lot of the luxury-car drivers don’t respect the walk-signals at the intersections of important streets.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a una nueva comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club! El domingo a la mañana a las 6,30 hizo frío en Florida, pero sin grandes problemas para los corredores y para quienes caminan rápido… Es agradable caminar cuando el 99% de los conductores de automóvil lujosos y teléfonos inteligentes en sus orejas están aún durmiendo. Desde el momento que regresamos a Florida estamos viendo muchos conductores de automóviles lujosos que no respetan las señales de los peatones en las intercepciones de importantes calles.

The last week was a very interesting seven-day period to learn more about politics, economy, unemployment, cars, technology, and Wall Street’s reactions.

La última semana fue muy un período muy interesante de siete días para aprender más acerca de política, economía, desempleo, automóviles, tecnología, y de las reacciones de Wall Street.

Here in the United States, the major indexes of the New York financial markets suffered a big decline during the week. They returned to levels of twelve months ago. On Friday, Dow Jones Industrials Average closed at 10012.23 points. Also, in one of the sessions, this famous index dropped below the 10000-mark.

Aquí en los Estados Unidos, los principales índices de los mercados financieros de Nueva York sufrieron una gran declinación durante la semana. Ellos retornaron a niveles de hace doce meses atrás. El viernes, Dow Jones Industrials Average cerró en 10012,23 puntos. También, en una de las sesiones, este famoso índice cayó por debajo de la marca de los 1000 puntos.

On Monday February 2, White House presented a $3.8 trillion-budget for fiscal 2011 to the Congress, including cutting funds of the NASA astronaut-program to return to the Moon on 2020.

On Friday February 5, the US Labor Department published the January job report. It informed the unemployment rate dropped last month to 9.7% from 10% in December, but employers continued cutting jobs in January. Last month, the economy lost 20,000 jobs. Some analysts said this index only reflects a partial view of reality. According to several sources there are more than 15 million Americans without jobs.

During the week, we think the most important subject of the media was the Toyota recall that includes more than 8 million vehicles across the world. Also on Thursday, another bad news hit the Japanese car maker, as brake problems surfaced in the popular hybrid of the company, the Prius 2010 model that has been on the street since in the middle of 2009.

Durante la semana, pensamos que el tema más importante de los medio fue el llamado de Toyota que incluye más de 8 millones de vehículos a través del mundo. También, el jueves, otra mala noticia golpeó al fabricante japonés de automóviles, cuando salieron a la superficie los problemas de frenos del popular híbrido de la compañía, el modelo 2010 de Prius que está en la calle desde mediados del 2009.

Additionally, David Stockman, former budget chief of the Reagan administration talked to different media about his opinion related to the AIG case and the Wall Street strong lobbying efforts to show the economy and the finances from the viewpoint of big corporations. Also, in different interviews, Mr. Stockman affirmed Wall Street exerts a negative influence in the decisions of the Federal Reserve and the US Department of Treasury. He is against the doctrine: “too big to fail”.

Adicionalmente, David Stockman, ex jefe de presupuesto de la Administración Reagan habló con diferentes medios acerca de su opinión relacionada con el caso AIG y los fuertes esfuerzos de influencias de Wall Street para presentar a la economía y a las finanzas desde el punto de vista de las grandes corporaciones. También, en diferentes entrevistas, el Señor Stockman afirmó que Wall Street ejerce una influencia negativa en las decisiones de la Reserva Federal y del Departamento de Tesoro de los Estados Unidos. El está en contra de la doctrina: “demasiado grande para quebrar”.

The debate about the name of the new digit tablet from Apple continues in the media and in between the members our Club. Some people think Apple was short in imagination when it baptized its new digital creature as “iPad”. Maybe, some non-fanatics of the smart gadgets could mix names and concepts between “ïPod” and “ïPad”.

El debate acerca del nombre del nuevo tablero digital de Apple continúa en los medios y entre los miembros del Club. Algunas personas piensan que Apple estuvo corto de imaginación cuando bautizó a su nueva criatura digital como “iPad”. Automobile Industry: Who is in trouble?

The latest bad news those are hitting Toyota, its partners, and customers open a new key question mark about the future of the automobile industry.

First, is it really only a problem of the world’s largest automotive company, or are there something more behind the scene?

If it is only an engineering fault from Toyota, maybe its future as a leading company could be shaken seriously. During the last few weeks, its stock went down 20 percent on Wall Street. And according to its estimates, the recalls and lost sales will cost it $2 billion by the end of March.

What do you think? Did you have this experience at least one time? We felt very astonished in the Rocky Mountains region when in one situation we made a distance of 60 miles with curves and in up and down traveling, in less than 30 minutes. Worse, when we stopped the car we didn’t find a mechanic to test our speedometer, we were unable to replace it for a new one.

In summary, technology could help the automobile industry to produce better cars but also it could make powerful guns to generate more suicides. Did you think about this dilemma?
