¡Hola!

We are ending a hard year also with surprises during the Holidays. The incident aboard a Northwest Airlines-Delta flight in Detroit on December 25th returned the panic about acts of terrorism. The devils never take vacations.

Did you read the news during the last few days? What was the most important subject of the week? Probably, the most important subject for you was the family together next to the Christmas’ tree.
Old Year: Last News

- On Thursday morning, the US Senate voted 60-39 to approve to an overhaul to the nation’s health care system. The process showed fierce opposition from Republicans and some division among Democrats. Howard Dean who ran for president in 2004 denounced this bill as a sellout, while President Obama heralded it as a historic breakthrough. The next step will be to reconcile Senate and House versions of the bill.

- A day before, in an exclusive interview with Jim Lehrer from the PBS News Hour TV program, President Obama summarized his eleven months in the White House with these words: “ I think that we have managed an economic crisis of monumental proportions, two wars, a whole host of other challenges, very well. I am entirely dissatisfied with where we are right now in terms of jobs, and the fact that families out there on the eve of Christmas are still really worried about being able to pay the bills or send their kids to college or have health care for themselves.”

- A winter storm spread across the Midwest during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Also the snow gave Dallas a rare white Christmas bringing a blanket of snow to Texas.

- China also was an important part of the headlines. A Chinese court has sentenced to Liu Xiaobo, a prominent political dissident to 11 years in prison for the crime of incitement to subvert state power.

- Next week, China will execute Akmal Shaikh, Briton citizen who has suffered mental illness. It is the first execution of a foreign citizen in long years. The Chinese Supreme Court rejected an appeal from British Prime Minister.

- During the last few days, in addition, Iran was an important headline. On Saturday, thousands of protesters clashed violently with security-service officials across Tehran. The international analysts think this is the beginning of a cruel civil war. Some observers expect the oil price will be impacted in 2010 for this crisis and nobody knows what will be the end of the new chaos that began a week ago with the death of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, a prominent dissident cleric.

From our point of view, Christmas was not a stop for the bad news. China, Iran and the string of attacks against Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad showed a gloomy picture in opposition of that the Holidays Season means. It is very sad, but it is the reality.

All the best,

Domingo

Sunday Bilingual News - Special Edition

Dear Friends:

We are living Christmas, a special celebration that has a lot of meanings across the world.

Your Christmas, My Christmas, Our Christmas

Vuestras Navidades, Mi Navidad, Nuestras Navidades

Its roots came from the Bible. In the New Testament, one of the Gospels written by Luke explains the first Christmas’ meaning. This Gospel gives the historic references of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.

Today, Christmas is a day of feelings… It is family day when children, parents and other members of the family exchange gifts, smiles, affection, and good moments.

But Christmas also is a painful day for all the others who haven’t bread and food on the table, for everybody who does not have a job, and for the human beings who live alone without family and warm feelings.

Now we have iPhones, Blackberrys, fast cars, and airplanes but a lot of people are living worse than Joseph and Mary when they laid Jesus in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn of Bethlehem.

Despite of all, we have to heal our injuries and continue working for better moments.

My best wishes of happiness for all of you in these Holidays and forever!

Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Like every week, through this Sunday Bilingual News, we would like to propose a bilingual practice discussing what happened in the last few days.

¡Hola!

Last week was not for celebrations, except for one or maybe two subjects. For you, what was the most important news of the week?

Climate Change: Polar Bears in Florida?

Cambio del Clima: ¿Osos polares en Florida?

- In Copenhagen, tensions climbed inside and outside the U.N. Climate Change Conference. On Wednesday, protesters clashed with police outside the convention center as more than 100 world leaders were arriving for the last sessions of the summit to the Danish capital. Meanwhile negotiators continued the battle to reach a climate agreement.

- On Monday, in Washington, President Obama met the leaders of 12 banks and financial institutions, pressing executives to explore the way to help the economy come back to previous levels before the 2008 collapse.

- On Tuesday, the 787 Dreamliner airplane of Boeing Co made its first flight, marking a success for the company after two years of delays and different kinds of problems.

- Also on Tuesday, President Obama proposed to the federal government to acquire a largely unused Illinois prison to house about 100 prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

- On Thursday, some press agencies revealed Iraqis militants have used a $26 software program to intercept live video from the US Predator spy-airplanes, potentially providing them with information they need to evade or monitor U.S. military operations.

- Also on Thursday, Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2002, published a critical article in the pages of The Washington Post about the health-care bill. He said: “If I were a senator, I would not vote for the current health-care bill. Any measure that expands private insurers’ monopoly over health care and transfers millions of taxpayer dollars to private corporations is not real health-care reform… Real reform would significantly lower cost, improve the delivery of health care and give all Americans a meaningful choice of coverage. The current Senate bill accomplishes none of these…”

- On Friday, President Obama talked at the Climate Change Conference with a tough tone because China didn’t accept any condition to the target problem of climate change. About this subject, the US President said: “These measures need not be intrusive or infringe upon sovereignty. They must, however, accept an agreement that is credible, and that we are living up to our mutual obligations. Without such accountability, any agreement would be empty words on a page.”

Additionally, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva added: “What we do not agree is that the most important figures on planet Earth sign any kind of document or paper just to say we signed a document or a paper. I would love to leave Copenhagen with the most perfect signed document in the world, but if we do not have the conditions to build such a document by now, I am not sure some angel or some wise man will come down to this plenary and will put in our mind some intelligence we lacked up until now.”

From our point of view, the main subjects of the week were the Climate Change Conference and the last actions in the US Senate to past the bill for health care. Do you agree?

In both cases, no angel or wise man came down to put in the mind of the decision-makers some minimum intelligence to change the flowing of ideas for the right direction.

The actions around Copenhagen summit were symbolic. Really nobody wants to make the sacrifice for others. In particular, China is acting with intolerant manners after all the Communist regime has received from the western countries to grow as a industrial power.

In the US Capitol, the negotiations to achieve the 60 votes after compromises of compromises show a difficult ending and maybe an insufficient bill that could harm the future of Americans.

First at all, for you, what was the most important news of the week?

From our point of view, the week between Monday December 7 and today was a rich mosaic of different subjects to discuss in a bilingual practice. But overall, the President Obama’s speech accepting the Nobel Peace Price in Oslo was really the major issue for both the people who criticized him and his supporters.

Paradox of the Nobel Peace Prize 2009

Paradoja del Premio Nobel de la Paz 2009

Some people applauded the President Obama’s speech as a classic American speech of a war president, but the majority of the population doesn’t understand the links between this award and the current status of the President Obama as commander in chief of a nation involved in two wars. For the other side, a lot of Europeans didn’t like the accepting of the Nobel Peace Price by the US President just a week after he ordered 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

- What is your opinion about the controversial issue to accept a peace award talking about the war?

- Did you watch the ceremony in the City Hall of Oslo looking the faces of who were hearing President Obama talking about a just war? Do you know the applause was not unanimous?

- Do you agree with President Obama when in his speech, he compared the current war against terrorists with the Holy War of the times of the Crusades?

- What do you think about the President Obama’s statement: "Evil does exist in the world"?

- Could you make a parallel between Mohandas Gandhi and Presidente Obama?

- Do you think peace and war are incoherent for themselves?

In summary, when we reread President Obama’s speech we don’t see him receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, we imagine the Mio Cid or another of the Christian heroes of the Middle Ages fighting against the Moors or the Muslims of the Holy War. And this is real paradox. No real warrior -or commander in chief - could accept the flags of the peace before the total defeat of the enemy. For the real heroes of the Holy War, the Peace Prizes were the bloody heads of the beheaded enemies in middle of the roar of the battle and the steel-noise of the last swords in action.

Domingo

Collapse of Arab Fantasies

Derrumbe de Fantasías Árabes

Last Thursday, Dubai World, company controlled by the city-state of Dubai, announced it planned to postpone $60 billion dollars payment in debts to international banks.

During the last years, the state-controlled company had built luxury and extravagant properties like artificial islands, and ludicrous seven-star hotels, such as underwater hotel and a snow dome in the desert. Many of these properties are vacant because all these fantasies are very expensive for a world in economic crisis.

But the problem is not only the developments Dubai World made in the United Arab Emirates. This Arab company also made multi million dollar investments across the globe including hotels built in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Additionally, Dubai World for its fabulous projects was buying Russian steel and expensive materials from different European countries and Asia. And it contracted engineers, architects, and other professionals and contractors from South Korea and different countries of the world.

In summary, nobody knows till now what could be the potential ripple effect of this financial collapse. Meanwhile, world investors and analysts expect the worst.

For my side, I have other important news that nobody published in the main papers of the country till now.

The IBM scientists in collaboration with Stanford University created BlueMatter - new algorithm - that has achieved significant advances in large-scale cortical simulation.

Also working between IBM Research-Almaden and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the scientists have performed the first near real-time cortical simulation of the brain that exceeds the scale of a cat cortex and contains 1 billion neurons and 10 trillion individual learning synapse.

According to the sources, these advancements will provide a unique workbench for exploring the computational dynamics of the brain. This achievement is the start of new kinds of computing systems that will be imbued with integrated information real-time in a dependent context, and with the capacity to work in the ambiguity and complexity of the real-world environments.

In addition, the new computers will be more compact than the current technology and they will work with low power energy.

In summary, the new cognitive computers could quickly and accurately put together the disparate pieces of the big complex puzzle, helping business decision makers come to a logical response.

- The famous index Dow Jones Industrials Average hit the high level for 2009 during the Wall Street session of Wednesday November 11 closing at 10291.26 points. For the other side, the social problems continue at the top because a lot of companies announce more cut of employees.

- Before Afghanistan definitions, President Obama began a new trip across Asia on Friday. Some analysts ask what the priorities are in the presidential agenda now:
1) The fall of the Chinese Wall.
2) The definitions about the future of the Afghan war.
3) The drama of the people without real incomes and with a lot of social problems.

Everybody who knows the mentality of the Chinese leaders thinks the Western countries cannot change internal social and political problems of the Big Dragon, and they have to be very careful in business deals.

Some observers think the delay in the case of Afghanistan shows a big ambivalence in Washington with negative effects in the war against the terrorism.

About the unemployment case, the patience is near to the limit. Eloquent speeches don’t heal the pain of the people who is suffering this economic and social crisis. And the propaganda of the stimulus package looks only propaganda.

Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Good morning! Today is a gloomy day. I didn’t see the sun on my horizon when I woke up.

I feel very sorry I cannot write the normal Sunday Bilingual News issue to help you in your bilingual practice of this weekend.

Since November 2005, when Professor Rainer asked me for help in the creation of the Spanish-English Club, I always was very enthusiastic with the project thinking to help Broward Library in its mission to improve the bilingual experience of the Americans who want to walk the bridge and talk the language that links our two different cultures.

Unfortunately, today I don't feel in the mood to analyze the complex news of the last week.
I would like to apologize to you because I cannot write the issue you are expecting… I will try to write something during the next days. Thank you.
