Hello! Welcome to the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Today, Hurricane Gustav is on all the TVs, in all the papers, in all the people that once more are in jeopardy with fears for the worst.

Maybe it is not the best moment to review the headlines of the news, but we will try because it is a good exercise for our bilingual weekly practice. These were some of the headlines of the last days:

Tal vez no es el mejor momento para revisar los titulares de las noticias, pero trataremos pues es un buen ejercicio para nuestra práctica semanal bilingüe.

- On Monday August 25, the Democratic Convention opened its doors in Denver. During all the week, the politics was the first topic of the media. On August 27, Senator Barack Obama formally accepted the Democratic nomination. On Friday morning, Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced his vice-presidential running mate Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska.

- El lunes 25 de agosto, la Convención del Partido Demócrata abrió sus puertas en Denver. Durante toda la semana, la política fue el principal tema de los medios. El 27 de agosto, el senador Barack Obama formalmente aceptó la nominación demócrata. El viernes a la mañana, el candidato presidencial republicano John McCain anunció su compañera de fórmula como vicepresidente, la gobernadora de Alaska, Sarah Palin.

- Russia officially recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia. Russian troops continue in Georgian territory. Europe feels concern for the next events...

- Rusia oficialmente reconoció la independencia de Abjasia y Osetia del Sur en relación con Georgia. Las tropas rusas continúan en territorio georgiano. Europa siente preocupación por los próximos acontecimientos… (x)

- Hurricane Gustav hit Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and other islands of the Caribbean. All the country is awaiting the news of the advance of Hurricane Gustav toward the Gulf of Mexico.

- El huracán Gustav golpeó Haití, República Dominicana, Jamaica y otras islas del Mar Caribe. Todo el país está esperando noticias acerca del avance del huracán Gustav hacia el Golfo de México.

- U.S. Commerce Department revised its estimate for second-quarter gross domestic product increase to 3.3% from an original estimation of 1.9%.

- El Departamento de Comercio de los Estados Unidos revisó la estimación del producto bruto interno en relación con el segundo trimestre incrementándola de su original apreciación de 1,90% a 3,30%.

- Dell Inc, computer maker from Austin, Texas, published its fiscal 2009 second-quarter report. Its net income dropped 17% to $616 million despite an 11% increase in revenue for solid sales growth. Its total revenues were $16,434 million (or $16.4 billion). Investors punished the Dell’s aggressive price-cutting tactics sinking its stocks on Nasdaq 13.80%, or $3.48 to close at $21.73 Friday August 31. The Dell’s fall exceeded habitual reactions of the market in other similar cases.

- Dell Inc., fabricante de computadores de Austin, Texas, publicó el informe de su segundo trimestre fiscal 2009. Sus ingresos netos cayeron 17% a 616 millones de dólares a pesar de un incremento del 11% en sus ingresos gracias a un sólido crecimiento de sus ventas. - Major Wall Street’s indexes ended down to previous levels. The Dow Jones Industrials Average fell 84.51 points on the week closing at 11543.55.

The headlines of the news talk a lot about Iraq, Iran, Israel-Palestine, Afghanistan-Pakistan, China, India, and now Russia-Georgia, but what happens near the United States territory?

Latin America is full of surprises. It has a natural and cultural diversity more than a lot of countries that always are in the focus of the world.

Its landscape is a "gem" of multiple paints and forms: farmland to desert, forested mountains and big lakes to incredible beaches and impressive waterfalls.

I traveled two times to this exotic island of Tierra del Fuego where the natives made fires during the night to protect themselves against the coldest temperatures. This is the Island of the Fires.

My first trip to Ushuaia was driving through Chilean and Argentinian territories. It was a summer... One of the tires on my car blew in the middle of the night...It was very cold... terribly cold... bitterly cold!!!!

The past days were very bad for the Floridians due the tropical storm. Again this week was extreme not only here in the United States. A fast review of the headlines includes the following subjects:

Los últimos días fueron muy malos para los residentes de Florida debido a la tormenta tropical. Nuevamente la semana fue extrema no sólo en los Estados Unidos. Una rápida revista de los titulares incluye los siguientes temas:

- Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf resigned and Taliban escalated its attacks with bombs in Pakistan and more ambushes to the NATO troops in Afghanistan.

- El presidente pakistaní Pervez Musharraf renunció y el Taliban extendió sus ataques con bombas en Pakistán y con más emboscadas contra las tropas de la NATO en Afganistán.

- Russia didn’t withdraw its troops from Georgia after it signed the ceasefire. Its tanks didn't find opposition across the streets of cities and towns of the Georgian territory.

- Rusia no retiró sus tropas de Georgia después que firmó el cese del fuego. Sus tanques no encontraron oposición a través de las calles de ciudades y pueblos del territorio georgiano.

- The Olympic Games ended in Beijing with some question marks. US won 110 medals but China gained more gold medals. All the participants received as a gift, a portion of the Beijing’s smoke.

- Stocks and indexes of Wall Street ended the week without important changes. The Dow Jones Industrials Average fell 0.3% on the week closing at 11628.06. Crude oil barrel ended at $114.81 according to Reuters tables.

- Las acciones e índices de Wall Street finalizaron la semana sin importantes cambios. El índice Dow Jones Industrial Average cayó 0,30% por la semana cerrando en 11.628,06. El barril de petróleo crudo finalizó en $114,81 de acuerdo con las tablas de Reuters.

Last week, Intel held a new edition of its famous Intel Developer Forum at the Moscone Center, San Francisco. During the third session, the keynote speaker took a fascinating look at how technology will bring man and machine much closer together by 2050.

En la última semana, Intel celebró una nueva edición de su famoso Intel Developer Forum en el Moscone Center de San Francisco. Again last week, the drama of Georgia was headline of the majority of the newspapers and TV programs worldwide. The viewers who don’t like the news with blood preferred to watch the Olympics’ programs.

De nuevo en la última semana, el drama de Georgia fue titular de la mayoría de los periódicos y de los programas de televisión a nivel mundial. Los televidentes a los que no les gustan las noticias con sangre prefirieron mirar los programas de las Olimpiadas.

A fast review of the news of the last seven days includes some of these subjects:

- The Olympics Games 2008: Swimmer Michael Phelps from the United States won eight gold medals during the first week of the games, the most of any athlete at a single Olympic Games.

From my point of view, the conflict between Russia and Georgia have created new problems to the Western countries and Georgia population. According to the news, Mr. Saakashvili only talks and shouts “barbarians”…And the worst, he gave Russia the opportunity Mr. Putin was waiting since long time, to enter with tanks inside the Georgian territory. Some observers said: “Please, don’t provoke the Giant”. With enemies such as Russia you cannot play with romantic and epic poetry. You have to balance your words and actions very carefully, and if it is necessary, you have to put your body in front the tanks before the solders of the enemy assault the homes of your people, rape your women, and kill the elderly. This is the patriotism of the real heroes of the history. If Mr. Saakashvili wants to defend his country, he has to fight with weapons, not with words… Of course, probably he is captured, ending his days in a Siberian jail or his is executed for the Russia’s claims about South Ossetia.

Desde mi punto de vista, el conflicto entre Rusia y Georgia ha creado nuevos problemas para los países occidentales y la población de Georgia. De acuerdo con las noticias, el Señor Saakashvili sólo habla y grita “bárbaros”… Y lo peor, le dió a Rusia la oportunidad que el Señor Putin estuvo esperando por largo tiempo, entrar con tanques dentro del territorio de Georgia. Algunos observadores dijeron: “Por favor, no provoque al Gigante”. Con enemigos tales como Rusia usted no puede jugar con poesía romántica y épica. Usted tiene que balancear sus palabras y acciones muy cuidadosamente, y si es necesario usted tiene que poner su cuerpo en frente de los tanques antes que los soldados del enemigo asalten los hogares de su gente, violen a sus mujeres y maten a los ancianos. Esto es el patriotismo de los héroes verdaderos de la historia. Si el Señor Saakashivili quiere defender a su país, tiene que luchar con armas y no con palabras… Por supuesto, probablemente será capturado, terminando sus días en una cárcel de Siberia o ejecutado por los reclamos de Rusia acerca de South Ossetia.

The Russia of today is not the Russia of twenty years ago. During the last decade, Western companies and Wall Street investors helped Russia to recreate itself as one of the new super-powers of the world. By the way, two months ago, IBM called IT analysts to a conference where the tecnology leader gave details about the advanced computing systems installed by governmental companies and organizations everywhere across all the country in the last years. During the Cold War, Russian computers were bad “clones” of the American mainframes. Today they share the best American technology also with research labs installed by the American companies in Russian territory.

La Rusia de hoy no es la Rusia de veinte años atrás. Durante la última década, compañías occidentales e inversores de Wall Street ayudaron a Rusia a recrearse él mismo como una de la nuevas potencias del mundo. De paso, dos meses atrás, IBM llamó a los analistas de sistemas de información a una conferencia en la cual dio detalles acerca de los avanzados sistemas de computación instalados en compañías y organizaciones del gobierno en todas partes a través del país en los últimos años. Durante la Guerra Fría, los computadores rusos eran malas copias de los computadores americanos. Hoy ellos comparten la mejor tecnología americana y también con laboratorios de investigación instalados por las compañías americanas en el territorio ruso.

Some days ago, when visiting a friend on the mountain next to Driggs, Idaho, I found a very old album of black-and-while photos from his family in the attic of the house.

Algunos días atrás, cuando estaba visitando a un amigo en la montaña cerca de Driggs, Idaho, encontré un álbum muy viejo con fotos blanco y negro de su familia en el desván de la casa.

The pictures are not in good condition. But despite the effect of the time, the album has important value because it shows the life of part of the country approximately 100 years ago. Always, the testimonies of the past help understand the present and build the future.

Las fotos no están en buenas condiciones. Pero a pesar del efecto del tiempo, el álbum tiene importante valor porque muestra la vida de una parte del país aproximadamente 100 años atrás. Siempre los testimonios del pasado ayudan a entender el presente y a construir el futuro.

Normally, you can find complete books about the most important events of the history and hundreds and hundreds of sketches and pictures from George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, but references about the other heroes and hard workers who also contributed to the growth and expansion of the country are lacking.

Normalmente, podemos encontrar libros completos acerca de los más importantes acontecimientos de la historia y cientos y cientos dibujos y fotos de Jorge Washington, Benjamín Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, pero referencias acerca de los otros héroes y duros trabajadores, quienes también contribuyeron al crecimiento y expansión del país escasean.

During the 1700s and 1800s, the Teton Valley, part of the Rocky Mountains geography, was land of natives, explorers and adventures. During that time, there was no organized habitation in the valley.

In 1888, Benjamin W. Driggs, Salt Lake City lawyer, came to Teton Valley looking for ranching land. Three years later the Mormons established an agricultural community on the western side of the Teton Range. This was the birth of a dozen of small townships that decades later were absorbed into four main towns: Driggs, Victor, Tetonia and Alta.

En 1888, Benjamin W. Driggs, abogado de Salt Lake City, llegó al Valle de Tetones buscando tierras para construir un rancho. Tres años después, los mormones establecieron una comunidad agrícola en el lado oeste de las Montañas de Tetones. The pictures from the album reflect details of the life of major town of the valley, Driggs, in the beginning of the 1900s and to the Second World War.

Las fotos del álbum reflejan detalles de la vida del mayor pueblo del valle, Driggs, en los comienzos de los años 1900 y hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

In short time, Driggs evolved as commercial center for the farmers of the valley. On the main street in town, they built a bank - the First National Bank - that is in the first pages of the album. Next to the bank, also was established a shopping center and a gas station.

En corto tiempo, Driggs evolucionó como centro comercial de los granjeros del valle. En la calle principal del pueblo, ellos construyeron un banco – el First Nacional Bank – que está en las primeras páginas del álbum. Próximo al banco, también se establecieron una serie de negocios y una estación de gasolina.

The main street of Driggs was part of the highway corridor between this center of residence and enterprise and Victor, second in population till now in the Teton Valley. For some residents, both are only one despite a distance of 8 miles. In the past, somebody joked about “Drictor”.

La calle principal de Driggs fue parte de la carretera que une este centro residencial y de empresas y Victor, segundo en población hasta ahora en el Valle de los Tetones. Para muchos residentes, ambos son uno a pesar de la distancia de 8 millas que los separa. En el pasado, algunos bromeaban acerca de “Drictor”.

Through its pages, the album of the attic shows men and women riding horses, a rodeo, some buildings of the Driggs downtown, and the footprint of the snow storms during the winters. According to all the evidence, this was the life in Teton Valley for decades.

Other testimony of roots of the valley are the old church houses that today remain standing in places where nothing more are there. They were the spiritual and social centers of the different townships dotting the valley floor when the Mormons arrived from Utah. Since those times till now, the inhabitants - mostly descendants of the settlers- go to the church on Sunday morning and the majority of the shops are closed.

In summary, the album from the attic is unveiling to us something different than the history of the big cities of the country. But this is also their country, and the people who lived all their life in the Valley are very proud for their land and for their nation.

Pleasure of flying - Placer de volar


After a longer white winter, the quiet Teton Valley changed its colors, movements, routines and sounds in the arrival springtime. Since the middle of May, the flowers painted rocks and grass in yellow, red, blue, violet. The birds arrived in flocks. The highways increased their traffic with the rush of sport utility vehicles transporting canoes, bicycles, motorcycles… and people.
Después de un muy largo invierno blanco, el tranquilo Valle de Tetón cambió sus colores, movimientos, rutinas y sonido con el arribo de la primavera. Desde mediados de mayo, las flores pintaron las rocas y la hierba en amarillo, rojo, azul, violeta. Los pájaros llegaron en bandadas. Los caminos incrementaron el tráfico debido a la prisa de vehículos utilitarios deportivos transportando canoas, bicicletas, motocicletas… y gente.

Also the small airport of Driggs woke up from the winter lethargy to convert itself into a very special recreational center for sophisticated tourists who like the challenge of air and the passion to look at the hills from the seats of the metal birds.
También el pequeño aeropuerto de Driggs despertó del letargo invernal para convertirse el mismo en un muy especial centro de recreación de sofisticados turistas a los que les agrada el desafío del aire y la pasión por mirar las montañas desde los asientos de las aves metálicas.

Now, here in Driggs, the airport is offering scenic airplane flights over the Teton Mountain Range and the Valley of Teton County. A lot of tourists come to enjoy the pleasure of flying over the Tetons.

The menu of the Teton Aviation Center includes two main “tours” and other services. The first tour named “airplane scenic ride” is a flight in a Cessna 172 over the mountains and the valley for 3 passengers with a pilot from the Center. Its cost is $235 plus tax for approximately an hour.

When Bob saw the current story, he smiled and said: "When we were lived in Crystal Lake, IL, during the summertime - between school years - our cabin - at the end of the road - was close to a large empty corn field. Occasionally a Piper Cub would land on the field and the pilot would take the kids for a ride. Yes, your story brings back memories of the "good old days".

My first experience was different. When I was a teenager, frequently I traveled getting free rides from passing trucks in the highway… One day, I was tired waiting and nothing…In that moment, I made a critical decision. I walked to near airport…When I arrived to the station, I found only a small airplane taxiing across the runway. Immediately, I went to the edge of the runway shaking my hands and arms and shouting: "Please… please! I need to travel to Buenos Aires and I don’t have any money in my pocket…Do you need a co-pilot?" One hour later, we were landing in the Buenos Aires airport. In Spanish, the translation of "hitch a ride" is: "hacer autostop" or "hacer dedo".
