During the last few days I received a lot of Christmas messages and nice letters from here, the United States, and from Argentina, Germany, South Korea, Venezuela and other countries. THANK YOU!

My young son Federico from Buenos Aires, Argentina sent an exciting message. He said: “It is nice to celebrate Christmas in an area with a lot of snow.” I answered him: “The snow is only nice on Christmas greeting cards or when you are relaxing in a tourism center with all the 5 star services near at hand…”

Mi hijo menor Federico desde Buenos Aires, Argentina, envió un emocionante mensaje. El dijo: “Qué bonito es celebrar Navidad en un área con mucha nieve.” Yo le respondí: “La nieve es solamente linda en las tarjetas de saludos de Navidad, o cuando uno está descansando en un centro turístico con todos los servicios cinco estrellas al alcance de sus manos.”

Since 10 days ago, it has snowed everyday on Teton Valley. According to the statistics, this December is one of the coldest per decades despite the global warming.

- The Christmas week began with bad news from Toyota. The Japanese car manufacturer made a grim forecast after years of profits and growth. It will close factories and stop its expansion plans in the United States.
Questions: Are the current car maker problems a new sickness? (car-no-sale-ness?)
Did you know Canada made a financial rescue to the car makers with factories in their country including Toyota?

- La Semana de Navidad comenzó con las malas noticias de Toyota. El fabricante japonés de automóviles dio a conocer un sombrío pronóstico después de años de ganancias y crecimiento. Cerrará fábricas y detendrá sus planes de expansión en los Estados Unidos.

- On Monday December 22, Guinea President Lansana Conté died after 24 years ruling this poor African country. President Conté was 74 years old and the news said he suffered a long, unspecified illness. Next day a group of soldiers proclaim a coup. Captain Moussa Dadis Camara seized power and announced that it will rule the country for two years prior to a new presidential election.
Questions: Do you know where Guinea is located in the African territory?
Do you think a democracy of 24 years is a real democracy?
Do you believe in military coups as the solution for corrupt regimes?

- El lunes 22 de diciembre, el Presidente de Guinea Lansana Conté murió después de 24 años gobernando ese pobre país africano. El Presidente Conté tenía 74 años de edad y las noticias dicen que sufría de una larga pero no conocida enfermedad. Al siguiente día, un grupo de soldados proclamó un golpe de estado. El Capitán Moussa Dadis Camara tomó el poder y anunció que gobernará el país por dos años antes de una elección para nuevo presidente.

- On Wednesday December 24, heavy snow storms were announced in different northern states of the US. Police recommended canceling holiday trips due to bad weather conditions on the highways. Routes on the Rocky Mountains area were closed.

What is the difference between our snow storms and the Russian storms? We feel very cold here too!

- On Friday December 26, Pakistan began a movement of troops away from Afghanistan perimeter to the Indian border. Pakistan’s actions reflect continuing tensions with India after the November terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Questions: From your perspective, what will be the next step? Condalezza Rice or Hillary Clinton traveling again to the region?
Could the Western leaders stop the tensions between the two neighbors? Or will we need Russian or Chinese assistance?

- The financial week ended with negative results on the Wall Street markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average declined 63.56 points, or 0.74%, on the week closing at 8515.55. Also Nasdaq Composite lost 34.08 points, or 2.18%, closing the week at 1530.24.

- But all was not bad during the week. Eaton Corporation announced it is developing vehicles driven by fluid power. With its experience on hydraulic machines, the company plans to make hydraulic hybrid systems (SHH) and create new hybrid vehicles. The first experiment on the road will be with package delivery vehicles of UPS in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

We are at the start of the winter season. Do you know? Alan, Diane, Julie, Sarah, Walsh…in Worcester, MA and I in Teton Valley, we know what “winter” means…

Estamos en el comienzo del invierno. ¿Se dieron cuenta? Alan, Diane, Julie, Sarah, Walsh… en Worcester, MA y yo en el Valle de los Tetones, nosotros sabemos qué significa “invierno” …

The winter has begun in the northern hemisphere and the summer in the south below the Equator line.

El invierno ha comenzado en el hemisferio norte y el verano en el sur debajo de la línea del Ecuador.

What about Florida? I guess you are living the best season of the year. But, please take a portion of our menu:
- Snow.
- Ice.
- Cold winds.
- Gloomy days.
- Trees without leaves.

- On Monday December 15, Caroline Kennedy began her campaign seeking the New York Senate seat that will be vacant if Senator Hillary Clinton assumes Obama’s appointment as Secretary of State. Immediately, she gained a lot of supporters, but also numerous opponents.
Questions: What is the last goal of the daughter of the assassinated President John F. Kennedy? Perhaps, she is seeking the office held by her father in 8 or 12 years from now…Did you think about this?
Also, maybe, she could be the first female U.S. President if Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton or …if they don’t seek the position before. What do you think about her potential possibility?

I hope you have nice weather where you are. Here, in the Teton Valley, all is white and the temperature is lower than everywhere. I miss my Sunday outdoor swimming also during December when I lived in Florida. Yesterday I spent more than an hour to remove the snow from the entrance of the garage so I could to go to the post office.

Espero que tengan buen tiempo donde ustedes se encuentran. Aquí, en el Valle de los Tetones, todo está de “blanco” y las temperaturas son más bajas que en cualquier otra parte. - Asian financial markets tumbled sharply as consequence of the auto maker crisis.

- On Tuesday, December 9, the Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich was arrested on charges related to the selection of the replacement for the Senate seat being vacated by President Elect Barack Obama. The prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, accused the Governor of treating the vacancy for money as an auction.

Questions: Is it the first time somebody tries to “sell” a vacant seat in the Congress? What kind of civil authority could have all who were or are involved on these not ethic negotiations?


- Durante el martes, 9 de diciembre, el Gobernador de Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, fue arrestado con cargos relativos a la selección del reemplazo de la posición del Senado que ha sido dejada vacante por el Presidente Electo Barack Obama. El fiscal, Patrick Fitzgerald, acusó al Gobernador de negociar la vacante por dinero como en una subasta.

- On Thursday, December 11, Bernard L. Madoff, 70, prominent leader of the financial services industry, was arrested by FBI agents and charged with one of the biggest frauds of Wall Street. Federal agents described the Madoff’s operation as a massive Ponzi scheme. Apparently he defrauded important investors and institutions in New York, West Palm Beach, Miami and other places during a long period.

Questions: Why nobody suspected before the fraud? Could you imagine a great philanthropist, pillar of the financial community and chairman of Nasdaq going to jail for a huge scam of tens of billions of dollars?

- Also on Thursday, the Senate abandoned the efforts to pass the rescue bill for the automobile industry prepared of the House of Representatives. Despite the disagreement of the Senate Republicans, the White House is considering using money from the $700 billion financial bailout to help automakers in the emergency.

Questions: Will this money stop the decline of the industry? Will the American auto makers learn from this hard lesson? Who will be the first beneficiary: the companies, the employees, the foreign suppliers, or the country?

- The week ended with mixed results on the Wall Street markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average declined 5.74 points, or 0.07%, on the week closing at 8629.68. On the other hand, Nasdaq Composite advanced 31.41 points, or 2.08%, closing the week at 1540.72.

Did you read about the republican virtue of George Washington? As General Jose de San Martin in South America, the first president of the United States was against partisanship and sectarianism. The last few days were full of gloomy news. But this is not all… Today is another bloody day on our calendar. Sixty seven years ago, today more than 2,300 people were killed. Japanese warplanes attacked the home base of the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, pushing the United States into World War II.

Los últimos días estuvieron plenos de noticias pesimistas. Pero esto no fue todo… Hoy es otro día sangriento en nuestro calendario. Sesenta y siete años atrás, hoy más de 2.300 personas fueron muertas. Aviones de guerra japoneses atacaron la base de operaciones de la Flota del Pacífico de los Estados Unidos en Pearl Harbor, Hawái, empujando al país dentro de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

As President Franklin D. Roosevelt said about that occasion, today is “a date which will live in infamy.”

Despite all the events the world lived through after the World War II, the devils continue producing horrors around the globe pushing people and countries one against another and creating more anger everywhere.

The best example of today is the recent terrorist attack in Mumbai. During the last days, angered mobs through Indian’s streets clamored for war against Pakistan. Another infamy day close to us was September 11, 2001.

It is time to defeat the Gods of War with the lesson that History is giving us, and with new kinds of leaders who work for the Gods of Peace to build a new world more balanced, more fair, more bright and also more smart in the good sense.

In the international sections of the papers, last week began with the debate about who was the responsible of the Mumbai attacks. Pakistan said it is one of the victims. They don’t want war with India and they believe the mastermind of the last terrorist attack in Indian lands looks for the confrontation between the two neighbor countries.

En las secciones internacionales de los periódicos, la última semana comenzó con el debate sobre quien fue el responsable de los ataques de Mumbai. Pakistán dijo que es una de las víctimas. Ellos no quieren guerra con India y ellos piensan que el cerebro del último ataque terrorista en tierras de la India busca la confrontación entre los dos países vecinos.

Pakistani ambassador in Washington affirmed the "brain" of this attack hates India and Pakistan and will enjoy if both fight against each other. Do you believe Pakistan is responsible for the attack? Or it is other victim?

Some analysts commented the evolution of the crisis in Thailand. The Primer Minister Somchai Wongsawat was forced to step down. King Bhumibol, 81, didn’t speak to his people in this situation. Some sources said the Thai King is sick. The monarch has no formal political power, but he intervened in several past political crises to shore up the democracy or to sanction military coups.

In the domestic side, last Monday, the National Bureau of Economic Research said its Business Cycle Dating Committee determined that the United States entered recession in December 2007. The problem is nobody knows when this negative cycle for the economy will finish.

On Friday, the U.S. Labor Department published the unemployment rate of November that grew to 6.7%, the highest level since October 1993. In the last month, the country lost 533,000 non-farm jobs.
