Can IBM improve my Dad’s chocolates?

When I was a child, my father had a chocolate’s factory. He used secret recipes to improve the taste and the quality of the chocolates. He worked for hours in his laboratory and after that all the customers ate his products in seconds.

But sometimes my father felt disappointed for the quality of the cocoa beans, the key ingredient of the chocolates. He always wanted the best quality. In those circumstances, the cocoa provider answered: “Sorry, the last cocoa crop was bad”.

Days later, IBM informed it is helping to study the cocoa genome with computational biology technology. The IBM researchers are worked at T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York with agricultural experts from the United States Department of Agriculture and technicians from the chocolate factory Mars Incorporated.

IBM says to sequence and analyze the entire cocoa genome will require five years, but it expects once the study end, it has potential to provide positive social, economic and environmental impact for the more than 6.5 million small family cocoa farmers around the world.

The United States Department of Agriculture commented the sequence of the genomes of agriculture crops is a critical step to understand the genetic information of a plant and improve its crop.

My dad always believed in the technology. He frequently said the sciences applied to the analysis of the food, plants, animals, and improving the nourishment ingredients will help to our life, and produce positive changes in the humanity. But in his time, his technology was a mechanical calculator, plus pencil and paper for the math side of his research. His laboratory was as the back room of a neighborhood pharmacy with some glass tubes, containers for different ingredients, several pots and small kitchen.

Will the supercomputers help to improve the cocoa genome and produce better chocolates?

In summary, the group who are researching the cocoa genome believes in the application of the supercomputers and the computational biology to improve the cocoa production and other crops such as corn, wheat and rice. They affirm the technology will help the agricultural community in Africa and in other emerging markets. As consequence, my dad’s chocolate always will have better ingredients, and you and I will never say: “No!” to the sweet temptation.

SPANISH PRACTICE – PRÁCTICA DE ESPAÑOL

A wild flower tells about itself…

The springtime and the summer’s arrival changed the colors of the landscape in the Teton Valley. First, it was all brown with green spots. After that, the field turned green with yellow spots. Next, everything changed again. The last picture looks like a “pastel” of a famous painter with a mix of yellow and green colors and small brown spots.

Who is the protagonist? Its name is dandelion, a wild plant with yellow flowers and notched leaves that bloom in the spring. It has a high reproductive potential. It has the ability to reproduce itself in large numbers.

Normally, a dandelion plant has 3, 4 or more flowers with a lot of seeds. It has the potential for producing several hundreds new dandelion plants. This is the reason that all is yellow and green during the warm days in the valley.

Now, dandelion feels proud… It says “Nobody care for a wild yellow plant, all the people look the red roses. Who will give a dandelion to his lover? This is truth, but the roses cannot live without lovers and romantics. Nobody gives me water. The people and dogs walk on me… Nobody caresses my petals, nobody touches my leaves, nobody turns his/her eyes to my yellow corolla, but everybody lives with me, with my yellow and green because I grow faster next the rough and hard border of stones. In the springtime I am the winner. ”
Nadie me da agua.

The dandelion is different from other flowers. It has the capacity to close its petals during the night and sleep relaxed for the next sunny day. And during the winter, it remains hidden maybe in between two stones and under the white cover of snow waiting better times to return to the light of the sun. Nobody will plant dandelions in the arrival of spring. It will grow again for itself with high concentration in the corner of the patio of the houses, or the road, with the same pride, with the same yellow flowers.

Good morning! How are you? Are you enjoying a nice weekend with family or friends? Happy Father's Day to those qualified!!

¡Hola!

Last week continued "hot" in the economic arena with the oil barrel, gasoline prices, and financial stocks sinking more in Wall Street markets. Also, Microsoft walked out after months wooing Yahoo! Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, the Windows’ guys, wanted to marry Yahoo! But Jerry Yang, Yahoo! CEO, said: “No!, No!, No!”. I prefer to be friend of Google. Maybe, Sergey Brin, Co-founder of Google, buys a second ticket for the Soyuz flight and we go together to the space.

Today, I have a new subject with several pictures for you to look at. Perhaps, they will produce a new brainstorm… Please, look at them below.

The death of a bird – La muerte de un pájaro

Death always is painful when you have had good feelings for the dead. You feel something strange inside yourself and you suffer sorrow. But normally, human beings don’t care for the persons and animals dying everywhere when they don’t have personal connections with them.

The story of today is very simple, maybe it is insignificant. A strong wind blew down a multi-color bird when she was flying over the house. How many times has something similar happened?

Never before, had we seen this bird in the blue sky. Maybe she was the one who every morning sang when we were drinking our first coffee. Independently of all, when she crashed against the house, we felt pain. It was a loud noise and we saw a small body falling. After that all was finished, but not inside us…

Dear Friends:

Hello! How are you? Today we begin the sixth month of the year: June. Did you realize we are ending the first semester of 2008? In short time, the shops will put out their warehouses of the stuff of the last Christmas they didn’t sell to try to sell this year as brand-new gifts and Happy-Holidays cards.

¡Hola!

Several days ago, somebody asked me to write something about “green power”. We know the change of the climate is producing panic in special for its consequences in the natural environment, more heat in the atmosphere, sharper variations of the weather than before, and hard storms in different points of the planet. The green power could help to reduce pollution and gives us a friendly environment.

But there are some pending questions:
- What is the best alternative source of energy for us?
-How much the change from the traditional energy sources to the renewable, non-polluting sources?
- Are all the alternative sources really “green”?

For the other side, the panic for the hurricanes and cyclones, plus the “propaganda” of the investors in new green power technologies push and push. It is a good idea to begin now in the development of green power solutions but it is not right to put all the negative waves in the fears of the change of the climate. Since the ancient times, the world suffers cyclones, hurricanes and hard sea storms.
