Hello! We are again in the celebration of a new Memorial Day, the day when the United States commemorates the men and women who died serving to the nation in military actions.

¡Hola! Nosotros estamos de nuevo en la celebración de un nuevo Memorial Day, el día cuando los Estados Unidos conmemoran a los hombres y mujeres que murieron sirviendo a la nación en acciones militares.

First enacted to honor of Union soldiers of the American Civil War as Decoration Day, it was expanded after World War I to all the men and women dead in military actions. Now, Memorial Day remembers also the soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan during the current military campaigns.

Primero promulgado en honor de los soldados de la Unión de la Guerra Civil Americana como Día de la Condecoración, fue extendido después de la Primera Guerra Mundial a todos los hombres y mujeres muertos en acciones militares. Ahora, Memorial Day recuerda también a los soldados que han muerto en Iraq y Afganistán durante las actuales campañas militares.

Despite all the noise produced during the last few days by the news linked with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we think it is good to make a stop to remember the thousands and thousands of anonymous soldiers who died fighting for the country. What is your opinion? Could you express your own feelings about this special commemoration?

A pesar de todo el ruido producido durante los últimos días por las noticias vinculadas con el derrame de petróleo en el Golfo de México, nosotros pensamos que es bueno hacer una parada para recordar a los miles y miles de soldados anónimos quienes murieron luchando por el país. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión? ¿Podrían expresar vuestros propios sentimientos acerca de esta especial conmemoración?

Several days ago, we read about the Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle of the American Civil War was the bloodiest single-day battle in all the American history, with about 23,000 casualties. Today, the battlefield of Antietam is one of the cemeteries of these anonymous soldiers who died in military actions. But when we travel across the country we find soldiers dead fighting for the nation also in the graveyards of small towns of the Rocky Mountains or the Great Plains.

Algunos días atrás, leímos sobre la Batalla de Antietam, luchada el 17 de septiembre de 1862, cerca de Sharpsburg, en Maryland. Esta batalla de la Guerra Civil Americana fue la batalla de un día más sangrienta de toda la historia americana, con más de 23.000 víctimas. Hoy, el campo de batalla de Antietam es uno de los cementerios de esos soldados anónimos que murieron en acciones militares. Pero cuando viajamos a través del país nosotros encontramos soldados muertos luchando por la nación también en los cementerios de pequeños pueblos de las Montañas Rocosas o de las Grandes Planicies.

Hello! Last week was very intensive in the domestic and international political arenas, excellent for a bilingual practice in Spanish and English.

¡Hola! La última semana fue muy intense en las arenas políticas interna e internacional, excelente para una práctica bilingüe en español e inglés.

Additionally, BP (British Petroleum) continued in the top of the headlines for the pending Gulf of Mexico’s case. Other issues of the week:
- Hewlett-Packard and Dell posted their respective financial results of the period February-April 2010 with better figures than a year ago.
- Gartner Group published an important analysis of the mobile phone market informing the worldwide phone sales grew 17 per cent in the first quarter of 2010 from the same period in 2009, totaled 314.7 million units sold during the first three months of this year.

Además, BP (British Petroleum) continuó en el tope de los titulares por caso pendiente del Golfo de México. Otros asuntos de la semana:
- Hewlett-Packard y Dell publicaron sus respectivos resultados financieros del período febrero-abril 2001 con mejores números que un año atrás.
- Gartner Group publicó un importante análisis del mercado de teléfonos móviles informando a través del mundo las ventas crecieron 17% en el primer trimestre 2010 respecto del mismo período del 2009, totalizando 314,7 millones de unidades vendidas en los tres primeros meses de este año.

In the domestic arena, Tuesday’s primary elections in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Arkansas reflected the bad mood of the citizens against Washington’s administration. Senator Arlen Specter was the big loser of the day.

En la arena interna, las elecciones primarias del martes en Pensilvania, Kentucky y Arkansas reflejaron el mal humor de los ciudadanos contra la administración de Washington. El Senador Arlen Specter fue el gran perdedor de este día.

On Thursday, the US Senate approved an new financial regulation that intends to prevent a repeat of the 2008 crisis.

In the international political landscape, Iran signed an agreement with Brazil and Turkey that looks a ruse to retain more than enough enriched uranium to make a bomb. The United States and many European leaders reacted skeptically to the pact among Iran, Turkey and Brazil.

En el paisaje político internacional, Irán firmó un acuerdo con Brasil y Turquía que luce como un ardid para retener más que bastante uranio enriquecido para fabricar una bomba. For the other side, in special the Brazilian’s association with Iran showed the ambitions of its government to grow as rebel leader in a muddy sea with danger black holes. We think every country has the right to be independent in its ideas, but it also has the responsibility to balance its actions in the way to reduce tensions and preserve the harmony of the world relationships. What is your opinion? What do you see behind this noisy entrance of the Brazilian President in the territory of the Muslim belligerent block?

Por otro lado, en especial la asociación brasileña con Irán mostró las ambiciones de su gobierno para crecer como un líder rebelde en un mar turbio con peligrosos agujeros negros. Nosotros pensamos que cada país tiene el derecho de ser independiente en sus ideas, pero también tiene la responsabilidad de balancear sus acciones en la manera de reducir tensiones y preservar la armonía de las relaciones mundiales. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión? ¿Qué ven detrás de esta ruidosa entrada del Presidente Brasileño en el territorio del bloque musulmán beligerante?

Hello! Today Florida woke up to cloudy weather and during the morning the sun and the clouds were playing the game of hide and seek.

¡Hola! Hoy Florida despertó con un clima nubado y durante la mañana, el sol y las nubes estuvieron jugando el juego de las escondidas.

Early, in the morning, like every Sunday, we heard the chirping of birds and the singing of the nature very clearly, and we felt happy because the music of the birds is a sign of renewing life.

Temprano, en la mañana, como todos los domingos, escuchamos el gorjeo de los pájaros y la canción de la naturaleza muy claramente, y nos sentimos contentos porque la música de los pájaros es un signo de vida vida renovada.

At the top of the headlines of last week again the black tide in the Gulf of Mexico was an important gloomy issue. We are never opposed to oil drilling where there are sources of this mineral but we cannot understand the human negligence against nature and the slow reactions in an emergency situation.

En el tope de los titulares de la última semana de nuevo la marea negra en el Golfo de México fue un importante asunto oscuro. Nosotros nunca nos hemos opuesto a las perforaciones por petróleo donde están las fuentes de este mineral pero no podemos entender la negligencia humana en contra de la naturaleza y las reacciones lentas en una situación de emergencia.

In the last few days, during the hearing in the US Congress, the companies involved in the accident in the Gulf of Mexico articulated poor arguments to explain reasons and actions linked with the oil spill that began on April 20.

En los últimos días, durante las reuniones en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, las compañías involucradas en el accidente del Golfo de México articularon pobres argumentos para explicar las razones y acciones vinculadas con el derrame de petróleo que comenzó el 20 de abril.

In other important news of the week, President Obama nominated former Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan to fill Justice John Paul Stevens’ seat on the US Supreme Court.

David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party became new British Primer Minister leading a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos al Sunday Bilingual News, la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club!

In Florida, the summer is here even though we have to wait till June 21 for the official celebration of the beginning of the new season. After several years living in a valley of the Rocky Mountains, we think only God could create a world with multiple climates, temperatures, colors, music, and perfumes.

En Florida, el verano está aquí aunque tenemos que esperar aún hasta el 21 de junio para la celebración oficial del comienzo de la nueva estación. Después de algunos años viviendo en un valle de las Montañas Rocosas, nosotros pensamos que sólo Dios podría crear un mundo con múltiples climas, temperaturas, colores, música, y perfumes.

As a routine, every Sunday morning before trying to analyze the news of the last few days we go out, we walk, and also we swim to allow for the rethinking a little about all that has happened during the week.

Como rutina, cada domingo a la mañana antes de tratar de analizar las noticias de los últimos días nosotros vamos afuera, caminamos, y también nadamos para permitir el repensar un poco acerca de todo lo que ha sucedido durante la semana.

The point is when the people are sleeping, we can learn more about other worlds, the world of the birds, the world of the plants, the reactions of the nature to the change of climate, to the wake up to the sun and all the phenomena linked with the sunrise.

El punto es que cuando la gente está durmiendo, nosotros podemos aprender más sobre otros mundos, el mundo de los pájaros, el mundo de las plantas, las reacciones de la naturaleza al cambio del clima, sobre el despertar del sor y todos los fenómenos vinculados con el amanecer.

Today we saw a bird swimming very fast in one of the lakes of South Florida that maybe eons before was a swamp. The surprise was not in its swimming. Suddenly our bird decided to change its (his/her) motion and direction. It began to fly and in only a second it was out of the focus of our camera.

Hoy vimos a un pájaro nadando muy rápido en uno de los lagos del sur de la Florida que quizás por tiempo indefinido antes fue un pantano. La sorpresa no fue su nadar. Repentinamente nuestro pájaro decidió cambiar su movimiento y dirección. Comenzó a volar y en sólo un segundo estuvo fuera del foco de nuestra cámara.

We - human beings – shout in the Athens’ streets, plot new bombing targets in the Times Square of New York, voting for a new United Kingdom government, or destroying nature with an oil spill like the Gulf of Mexico’s pending problem, but we cannot exchange our swimming for flying to the next tree or roof using our own intelligence and/or physical capabilities.

Nosotros – los seres humanos – gritamos en las calles de Atenas, tramamos nuevo ataque de bombas en el Times Square de Nueva York, votando por un nuevo gobierno en el Reino Unido, o destrozando la naturaleza con un derrame de petróleo tal como el caso pendiente del Golfo de México, pero nosotros no podemos cambiar nuestro nadar por volar hasta el siguiente árbol o techo usando nuestra inteligencia y/o nuestras capacidades físicas.

The last few days were full of polemic news including the new unemployment rate of April that shows better figures than before but still now doesn’t solve the problems of a lot of people who continue counting pennies to buy bread, or at least a healthy piece of fruit.

Los últimos días estuvieron llenos de noticias polémicas incluyendo la nueva tasa de desempleo de abril que muestra mejores números que antes pero todavía hoy no resuelve los problemas de mucha gente que continúa contando los centavos para comprar pan, o al menos una porción saludable de fruta.

From Greece to The United States in Circle
De Grecia a Los Estados Unidos en círculo

The first week of May was like a tour from Europe to the United States in a circle. For some observers, it began with the Greek rebellion against the austerity of its Government waiting to receive the financial rescue of European Union. Others started the trip in the Gulf of Mexico or in Times Square of New York depending on their main political affinities.

La primera semana de mayo fue como un viaje de Europa a los Estados Unidos en un círculo. Para algunos observadores, comenzó con la rebelión griega contra la austeridad de su Gobierno esperando recibir el rescate financiero de la Unión Europea. Otros comenzaron el viaje en el Golfo de México o en el Times Square de Nueva Cork dependiendo de sus principales afinidades políticas.

After that, the election of the United Kingdom transcended the domestic limits to create new question marks about the destiny of the survived territories of the former British Empire and their future relationships with the European Union and the United States.

Después de eso, la elección del Reino Unido trascendió los límites internos para crear nuevos signos de interrogación acerca del destino de los territorios sobrevivientes de al anterior Imperio Británico y las futuras relaciones con la Unión Europea y los Estados Unidos.

In the United States, a lot of observers were busy following all the steps of the failed Times Square bombing.

The tour in circle didn’t end with the week. Till now, nobody knows when the calm will return to the European financial institutions. Very soon, the oil spill case also will step forward through the aisles of the US Congress and the Justice Department to determine legal and maybe criminal responsibilities and the resulting costs.

El viaje en círculo no terminó con la semana. Hasta ahora, nadie sabe cuando la calma retornará a las instituciones financieras europeas. Muy pronto, el caso del derrame de petróleo también dará un paso hacia delante a través de los pasillos del Congreso de los Estados Unidos y del Departamento de Justicia para determinar las responsabilidades legales y tal vez criminales y los costos resultantes.

The election in the United Kingdom didn’t give a real winner. Some analysts think the voting ended with three losers and the urgency to find at least a temporary new head of the government until the voters again redirect their preferences to build a new majority.

Summarizing, the first week of May was not a brilliant week and from our point of view, its main issues will continue rolling and rolling for a long period. What is your opinion?
