Today is the first Sunday of 2008. It is the day of Three Wise Men (Los Reyes Magos), the last official day of the Holiday Season.

Here in the Teton Valley, it is snowing since Friday evening again. We have frequent snow storms. When the wind blows, big clouds of white powder – the snow – fly over the valley.

Since yesterday night, the authorities closed all the routes (caminos) in the area. The snow storms also are hitting (castigando, golpeando) Salt Lake City in Utah, Denver in Colorado, the Swan Valley in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.

By the way, Salt Lake City Airport is the most important international airport in the region. Denver is a huge airport with a lot of technology to clean the snow of the airplanes but it is farther than Salt Lake City.

I have the experience of a snow storm in the Denver Airport during a trip to the Lexmark's laser cartridges manufacturing plant in Boulder, Colorado, 10 years ago. The flights continued despite the snow and the white wind.

Gotas de agua en prisión / Drops of water in prison

En el Valle de los “Tetons”, algo extraño colgaba de los techos de la casas días atrás. No eran banderas multicolores. No eran luces de los decorados de Navidad. Parecían gotas de agua de las tierras de los gigantes de Gulliver petrificadas por un dios diabólico.

Las fantasías siempre son posibles cuando algo diferente se asoma a nuestros ojos y no tenemos una inmediata explicación racional.

Nunca antes, en viajes por países helados, había visto colgar tantas gotas gigantes de agua de los techos de las casas como “pendientes” de adorno de formas exóticas.

Siempre me llamó la atención el caer del agua de los torrentes o las gotas interminables de los grifos que producen ruidos molestos en noches desveladas.

Pero debido a los principios de física que hablan de las fuerzas de gravedad de la Tierra, nunca había imaginado que gotas de agua al caer desde los techos pudieran quedar colgando estáticas como por designio de alguna brujo de cuentos fantásticos con poderes para convertir todo en hielo.

¿Qué son en definitiva esas gigantescas agujas de hielo compuestas por miles de gotas de agua que no pudieron llegar al suelo y que están en prisión por días y días sin derramarse o derretirse aún cuando el sol muestra su cara?

La naturaleza tiene muchos caprichos que se son más llamativos que cualquiera de las mejores de pinturas, dibujos y esculturas de artistas esotéricos y de los creadores de lo increíble.

En particular, cuando las temperaturas bajan y bajan, se congelan ríos y lagos, y se cubren montañas y valles con extensos mantos de nieve.

También se producen otros fenómenos tales como la captura de millones de gotas de agua formando objetos vidriados de extrañas formas y dimensiones, dignos de la mejor muestra de cristalería del mundo.

Mientras el Dios de los Hielos gobierna las vidas y espíritus de los valles y las montañas nevadas, la naturaleza no puede jugar con las hojas amarillentas que caen de los árboles. Tampoco encuentra flores en jardines y calles para acariciarlas con brisas de viento. Sólo cuenta con su ingenio para convertir millones de gotas de agua en nieve o en objetos cristalinos que cuelgan de los techos, ventanas y vigas de las casas.

En resumen, esta es la historia de las gotas de agua en prisión. Ellas quieren disparar, ellas quieren ser libres y correr por la tierra como lo hacen cada vez que llueve en los lugares templados y cálidos.

Las cosas son distintas cuando vientos helados actuando como agentes del poderoso Dios de los Hielos cumplen con su mandato. El invierno de regiones frías no es sólo copos de nieve y viejecitos congelados al querer salir de sus casas. Es mucho más y hay que vivirlo para descubrir sus secretos.

UN Conference adopts plan for new climate pact. From Bali, Indonesia, delegates of 187 countries agreed to negotiate a new accord over the next two years.

The “Bali Action Plan” concludes that “deep cuts in global emissions will be required” and provides a timetable for two years of talks to shape the first formal climate treaty since the Kyoto Protocol 10 years ago.

Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas adopta plan para un nuevo pacto acerca del clima. Desde Bali, Indonesia, delegados de 187 países acordaron negociar un nuevo acuerdo en los dos próximos años.

El “Plan de Acción de Bali” concluye que profundos cortes en las emisiones mundiales de gases serán requeridos y provee un programa de dos años de conversaciones que den forma al primer tratado mundial desde el Protocolo de Kyoto hace 10 años atrás.

Nostalgias de mi calesita / Nostalgias of my Carousel

Caminando por una calle de una vieja ciudad alemana al borde del Río Rin, un día me detuve en una tienda de antigüedades, al observar tras una de sus ventanas, un pequeño objeto que me recordó momentos de mi niñez.

De inmediato, el recuerdo de la calesita de mi barrio volvió a mis ojos al observar una cajita musical a modo de una pequeña caja circular con caballos bajo un techo muy colorido. Recordé cuando tenía 6 o 5 años de edad y mis padres me llevaban los domingos a dar una vuelta de calesita.

Caballos de madera con monturas de fiesta de diferentes colores: blancos, rojos, celestes en círculo alrededor de un pilar azul y bajo un techo en cono también de color azul con estrellas doradas y ribete rojo y verde ornamentado con pequeñas esferas doradas. El piso color verde con una ancha base de azul, rojo y dorado.

La réplica de la calesita de mi barrio era una caja musical con melodías típicas de las calles de los países del norte de Europa, frecuentemente escuchadas en películas que muestran turistas asiáticos descubriendo el Viejo Mundo o series televisivas de espionaje de los tiempos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial o con El Agente Secreto 007.

Hoy, mi cajita musical tiene su lugar sobre uno de los muebles de mi sala de estar. Siempre, al mirar esta calesita, al ver como sus caballos giran, y al escuchar su música, alguna lágrima cae desde mis ojos, pues despierta ciertas nostalgias, memorias sobres mis papás y mi familia disfrutando de una tardecita de verano, más todo lo que recuerda esa caminata por las calles del centro comercial de Frankfurt.

Mi calesita es realmente un extraño objeto mágico pues al mismo tiempo me trae a la memoria las tardes calurosas del verano de Buenos Aires y las calles heladas cubiertas de nieve una clásica ciudad alemana por la cual han pasado reyes, emperadores, soldados, espías, turistas y niños europeos que crecieron en un mundo con diferentes caras y múltiples melodías.

Researchers from the IBM's semiconductor labs discovered a technology to put all the current intelligence of a supercomputer in a smaller computer of the dimension of a laptop. The microprocessors of the future using optical signals on a chip instead of electronic signals will cut the size of the current processors 100 to 1000 times.

Investigadores de los laboratorios de IBM descubrieron una tecnología que pone toda la inteligencia de los actuales supercomputadores en un muy pequeño computador del tamaño de un portátil. Construir un nuevo camino / Build a New Road

Un camino en construcción… Materiales y una señal que indica que se está construyendo una nueva calle, ruta, autopista o simplemente una vía de comunicación por el tránsito de vehículos y personas.

La construcción de un camino no es obra fácil. Además de materiales se necesita del trabajo del hombre. Todo comienza cuando un ingeniero traza el plano o gráfico que muestra donde comienza y termina ese camino, su extensión, sus curvas, sus intersecciones, sus accesos, el número y direcciones de sus distintas vías.

La distancia entre dos o más puntos geográficos suele ser lo primero que se establece. Luego vienen los detalles de la construcción, los tiempos que se requieren para cumplir con las etapas del proyecto y el cálculo de sus costos.

Al hablar de caminos, siempre surge el recuerdo de algún camino famoso. Muchas páginas de historia y atlas de geografía hablan de algún “Camino Real” (“Royal Road” o “King’s Highway").

A través de la historia, muchos de los caminos que se construyeron para comunicar palacios de reyes y donde éstos gobernaban fueron conocidos como “caminos reales”.

Actualmente el “Camino Real” más conocido es una ruta muy transitada de California que originariamente fue construida para conectar las misiones, pueblos, presidios de las viejas tierras españolas entre San Diego al sur y San Francisco al norte, cuando ese territorio era parte del domino de España en América.

¿Qué piensa usted cuando se enfrenta ante la señal de construcción de un nuevo camino?

Los gobernantes dicen que los caminos son señales de progreso. Los caminos siempre abren posibilidades impensables cuando un ingeniero traza su plano… Crean nuevas formas de comunicarse entre pueblos y estados. Establecen vías de transporte de las cosechas del campo, y los productos que se fabrican en las industrias hasta los consumidores. También son el medio que ayuda a extender la delincuencia de grandes ciudades a pequeña poblaciones. ¿Qué más puede agregar usted?

From Alaska, several newspapers talk about the Kivalina’s tragedy, an island that is losing ground due to the global warning. The water erosion washed away two-thirds of the island.

Kivalina is between the Chukchi Sea and the Kivalina River. According to the census of 2000, it had 377 inhabitants.
