¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la primera comunicación semanal de mayo del 2009 del Spanish-English Club! Se que ustedes están yendo hacia vuestro verano muy pronto. Aquí en el Valle de los Tetones, permanecemos en el limbo. Un día tenemos nieve, el otro es soleado y con temperaturas primaverales durante el día…

But this is not the main problem today. After the events of the past week my old jeep is sad and sick. Do you know why? Could you advise me about its sickness? Do you know why a strong vehicle with more than two wars in its past, today feels that its world is ending? Please look at the pictures and the vocabulary.

Pero este no es el principal problema hoy. Después de los acontecimientos de la pasada semana, mi viejo jeep está triste y enfermo. ¿Saben por qué? ¿Podrían aconsejarme acerca de su enfermedad? ¿Conocen porqué un vehículo fuerte con más de dos guerras en su pasado, hoy siente que su mundo se está terminando? - The week began with new information about the spread of the swine flu around the world. Different countries also canceled airplane flights to Mexico where till now looks as center of the outbreak.
Questions:
. Do you wash your hands frequently and try to avoid a possible infection?
. What is your opinion about the initiatives of our authorities to prevent the spread of the epidemic across the country?

- La semana comenzó con nueva información acerca de la extensión de la gripe porcina alrededor del mundo. Diferentes países además cancelaron los vuelos aéreos a México donde hasta ahora luce está el centro de la epidemia.

. ¿Se lavan las manos frecuentemente y tratan de evitar un posible contagio?

- On Monday, April 27, IBM unveiled details of an advanced computing system that will be able to compete with humans on the television quiz show “Jeopardy!” For nearly two years, scientists of the technology company have been working on a highly advanced Question Answering system codenamed “Watson”.

. Do you remember the match between an IBM supercomputer and the world chess champion of years ago?

- El lunes 27 de abril, IBM reveló detalles de un avanzado sistema de computación que podrá competir con seres humanos en el programa-concurso de la televisión “Jeopardy!”. Por casi dos años, científicos de la compañía de tecnología han estado trabajando en un muy avanzado sistema de respuestas de preguntas codificado como “Watson”.
Preguntas:
. ¿Piensan que es posible que una máquina responda preguntas acerca de historia, geografía, matemáticas, idiomas, películas y canciones mejor que sus competidores humanos?

- On Wednesday, April 29, President Obama celebrated his first 100 days of his presidential term with a press conference and other events. The journalist Bill O’Reilly on his TV program graded President Obama for his performance during the 100 days. He gave the President a “B” for domestic policy because the stock market has stabilized. He also gave a “C” to the President in the foreign policy category because he didn’t like his public criticism of America from our own President during his first trips abroad. Finally, O’Reilly graded the President with “C-plus” for leadership.
Questions:
. Do you feel confident to grade President Obama in his first 100 days in the White House?

- El miércoles 29 de abril, el Presidente Obama celebró sus primeros 100 días de su término presidencial con una conferencia de prensa y otras actividades. El periodista Hill O’Reilly en su programa de la televisión calificó al Presidente Obama por su desempeño durante los 100 días. Él le dio al Presidente una “B” por política interna debido a que el mercado bursátil se ha estabilizado. El también le dio una “C” al Presidente en la categoría de política exterior porque a él no le gustó el público criticismo respecto de los Estados Unidos por parte de nuestro propio Presidente durante sus primeros viajes al extranjero. Finalmente, O’Reilly calificó al Presidente con una “C-más” por liderazgo.

- On Thursday, April 30, the auto maker Chrysler filed for bankruptcy reorganization, after failing to reach an agreement with a group of creditors. At the same time, Italian car maker Fiat SpA has agreed to enter an alliance with Chrysler. According to different sources, Fiat wants to produce small cars for the US market using its own technology.
Questions:
.What will be the future for the production of Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles? Do you buy cars with dead brands or uncertain futures?
. Do you know past histories of vehicles or machines when the manufacturers suspend the production of their products?
. Could you write a story about the sadness of somebody who knows they will die soon? Imagine the famous jeep as being with soul and feelings.

- El jueves 30 de abril, el fabricante de automotores Chrysler se presentó a la justicia por la condición de reorganización por bancarrota, después de haber fallado en su intento de alcanzar un acuerdo con un grupo de acreedores. Al mismo tiempo, el fabricante italiano de automóviles Fiat SpA acordó una alianza con Chrysler. De acuerdo con diferentes fuentes, Fiat quiere producir sus automóviles pequeños para el mercado de los Estados Unidos usando su propia tecnología.

- Also on Thursday, the month of April ended. It was the Wall Street’s best month in nine years. After months of decline, the stocks began a turnaround starting in March.

- On Friday, May 1, hundreds of thousands of workers protested around the world for the fall of jobs and salaries in a very unusual celebration of Labor Day - May Day. Angry protesters created violent situations in Moscow, Berlin, Paris, Athens, Istanbul, Zurich, Santiago de Chile, Guatemala City and other countries where May 1 is the official day for the workers.

- El viernes 1ero de mayo, cientos de miles de trabajadores protestaron alrededor del mundo por la caída de trabajos y salarios en una poco común celebración del Día del Trabajo o Primero de Mayo. Manifestantes enfadados crearon situaciones violentas en Moscú, Berlín, París, Átenas, Estambul, Zúrich, Santiago de Chile, Cuidad de Guatemala y en otros países donde el Primero de Mayo es el día oficial de los trabajadores.

- The financial week closed with positive figures on the New York markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average gained 136.12 points or 1.69% on the week closing at 8,212.41. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite raised 24.91 points, or 1.47%, closing the week at 1,719.20. Also during the week, S&P 500 climbed 1.30% and NYSE Composite rose 1.84%.

. Are you buying stock? The stock of First Solar – solar technology manufacturer - was one of the winners of the week, growing 22.67% for the week to $180.86. On April 29, First Solar announced the financial results for its first quarter ended March 28, 2009. Quarterly revenues were $418.2 million, up 112.38% year over year. In addition, its net income was $164 million, up 253.06% also compared with the same period of year ago.

- La semana financiera finalizó con números positivos en los mercados de Nueva York. El índice Dow Jones Industrials Average ganó 136,12 puntos, o sea 1,69% en la semana cerrando en 8.212,41.
