Hello! Welcome to a new edition of the Sunday Bilingual News! The summer is finally arriving – better late than never. The sunny days also came to the Teton Valley. I hope you are enjoying a nice season, maybe on vacation.

Before we continue with the current issue, I would like to invite you to visit the Spanish-English Club blog. During the last few days It was updated with a new version of the previous Sunday Bilingual News titled: “What poverty really is?” If you enter the Internet blog, perhaps you will find some surprises: an extended analysis of news of the week ended on July 12, and a rich vocabulary list with comments and observations.

Antes que continuemos con el actual número, me gustaría invitarlos a visitar el blog del Spanish-English Club. Durante los últimos días fue actualizado con una nueva versión del previo Sunday Bilingual News titulada: “¿Qué realmente es la pobreza?”. Si ustedes entran al blog de Internet, tal vez encontrarán algunas sorpresas: un análisis extendido de las noticias de la semana finalizada el 12 de julio y una rica lista de vocabulario con comentarios y observaciones.

Today, the selection of the more important issues of the period July 13-19 looks easer than in the previous one. Between Monday and Thursday were the hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayor before the Judiciary Committee of Senate. The press followed the nomination process for the new Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court with a lot of attention and it was very interesting to hear questions and answers.

Hoy, la selección de los asuntos más importantes del período del 13 a 19 de julio luce más fácil que la de anterior. Entre el lunes y el jueves fueron las sesiones vista de la jueza Sonia Sotomayor frente al Comité Judicial del Senado. La prensa siguió el proceso de nominación del nuevo Juez de la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos con mucha atención y fue muy interesante escuchar preguntas y respuestas.

Also during all the week, different companies posted the financial results of the quarter ended during the last days of June. Wall Street was positively impacted by the Intel’s presentation and the healthy position of IBM, but it didn’t like Google’s slower growth compared to other times.

También durante toda la semana, diferentes compañías publicaron los resultados financieros del trimestre finalizado en los últimos días de junio. Wall Street fue impactado positivamente por la presentación de Intel y la posición saludable de IBM, pero no le gustó el crecimiento más lento de Google respecto de otras épocas.

For you, what was the main subject of the last few days?
- Do you know the Iranians returned to the streets and an ex-leader said the government has lost the trust of the country for the post-election unrest?
- Did you read about the bomb attacks at two American hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia?
- Did you follow the lastest news from the financial sector, in particular the potential bankruptcy of CIT?
- Do you know the main Wall Street indexes closed the week in positive territory? (Intel, IBM and other technology companies were key factor in this case).

Para ustedes, ¿cuál fue el principal asunto de los últimos días?
- ¿Saben que los iraníes volvieron a las calles y un ex-líder dijo que el gobierno ha perdido la confianza del país por los disturbios del período posterior a las elecciones?
- ¿Leyeron sobre los ataques de bombas a dos hoteles americanos en Yakarta, Indonesia?
- ¿Siguieron las últimas noticias del sector financiero, en particular la posible bancarrota de CIT?
- ¿Conocen que los principales índices de Wall Street cerraron la semana en territorio positivo? (Intel, IBM y otras compañías de tecnología fueron factor clave en este caso).

Personally, I paid attention to the nomination process of the new Justice of the Supreme Court because I think it is a good lesson in how democracy works in the United States.

Personalmente, yo presté atención al proceso de nominación del nuevo Juez de la Corte Suprema porque pienso que es una buena lección de cómo la democracia funciona en los Estados Unidos.

Always Supreme Court Justices are appointed by the President. But the appointment must be approved by a majority of the Senate. The Constitution did not set any requirements for the members of the Supreme Court. However, most have been lawyers and have had previous experience as judges on lower courts, and/or teaching law or have held public office.

Siempre los Jueces de la Suprema Cote son nombrados por el Presidente. Pero el nombramiento debe ser aprobados por la mayoría del Senado. La Constitución no establece requerimientos para la designación de los miembros de la Corte Suprema. Sin embargo, tienen que haber sido abogados y haber tenido previa experiencia como jueces de cortes de menor rango, y/o enseñando leyes o haber ejercido una función pública.

In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. After that, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was also named Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Now, the nominee is judge Sonia Sotomayor, daughter of a family originally from Puerto Rico, who grew up in New York. Till now, it is not clear if she will take the same political position held by the resigning Justice David H. Souter.

En 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor se convirtió en la primera mujer en servir en la Corte Suprema. Después, Ruth Bader Ginsburg fue también nombrada Jueza de la Corte Suprema. Ahora, la nominada es la jueza Sonia Sotomayor, hija de una familia originaria de Puerto Rico, quien creció en Nueva York. Hasta hoy, no está claro si ella tomará la misma posición política mantenida por el renunciante Juez David H. Souter.
