Sunday Bilingual News

From Driggs, Idaho

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! We are entering the third week of March. The engines of 2009 are accelerating across a route with different scenarios despite - till now - the economic sickness is not healed.

¡Hola!

The previous week began in Washington DC with the ceremony to extend the polemic stem cell research. Tuesday was the day for education in the White House, while in New York, the fraud victims were waiting for the confession from financier Bernard L. Madoff.

Earmarks came back to the scene with a big debate about what is ethical or not in the behavior of members of Congress.

Two massive shootings, one in Germany and the other in Alabama, put the bloody pictures in first place.

In all these cases, observers continue searching for the truth behind the events and decisions. What will be the benefits of the new stem cell research policy? How many Dr. Frankenstein disciples waited for this moment? Why some members of Congress defend the earmarks with passion and interest?

Please look at the picture enclosed in this issue. After that, try to explain in Spanish and/or English, what are the links between the bird looking for food on the frozen ground and the cases of this week.

All the best,

Domingo

The searching

The science competition organized by Intel always discovers new talent in students who expend their younger years searching like birds for food on the frozen ground.

Eric Larson, 17, of Eugene, Oregon, was not the first time he competed in science contests. Before, he went to Vietnam for a mathematic competition. Now, at Intel Science Talent Search, he presented his research project classifying mathematical objects called fusion categories. He worked in areas where he didn’t find previous papers. His real merit was to describe for the first time the fusion categories.

The second winner of the Intel Science Talent is also another 17 year old student. His name is William Sun from Chersterfield, Missouri. William received a $75,000 scholarship for his biochemistry project that studied the effects of a recently discovered molecule that could potentially help efforts to treat bacterial infections or prevent degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

As Mary Masterman, 2007 First Place Winner said: “Even if you think that what you want to do is impossible, go ahead and go for it because you never know what you can accomplish.”

The research of new subjects always requires internal energy and strong decision. Sometimes, it all looks like frozen ground where it is impossible to find food. Frequently, the searching for the knowledge is similar to the seeking for food when all around is desert, tundra or an iced steppe.

Year over year, of course, the winners of the Intel Science Talent Search are more than birds looking for food. They are the beginners of the new generation of citizens that will become the world of the future.
