Hello! Welcome to the fourth issue of February 2009 of the Sunday Bilingual News, the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club!

This weekend is an important holiday in different places of the world. From Saturday February 20 to Wednesday February 24 is Carnival. Do you know how the people celebrate Carnival in Rio de Janeiro? Did you hear about the Venetian Carnival? All Germany is on holiday this weekend. Similar to Rio, the people celebrate in Trinidad and Tobago, in Barranquilla, Colombia…

Este fin de semana es una importante fiesta en diferentes lugares del mundo. Desde el sábado 20 de febrero y hasta el miércoles 24 de febrero es Carnaval. ¿Conocen como la gente celebra Carnaval en Río de Janeiro? ¿Oyeron hablar sobre el Carnaval Veneciano? Toda Alemania está de fiesta este fin de semana. Como en Río, la gente celebra en Trinidad y Tobago, en Barranquilla, Colombia…

In the United States, Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans, Louisiana are the most famous celebrations.

En los Estados Unidos, los desfiles de Mardi Grass en Nueva Orleans, Luisiana son las celebraciones más famosas.

Maybe we need a good season with parades and masquerade balls. The psychologists recommend special entertainment when the pressure is high. What do you think? Do you see you dressing up in masks and fancy clothes? What kind of role would you like to assume if you go to a masquerade dance? (Emperor, queen, CEO, banker, baseball player, plumber…)

- The week began on Monday with the holiday of the Presidents Day and the expectations about the economic and financial pending problems.

- Also on Wednesday, February 18, Hewlett-Packard posted its last quarterly financial results with a fall of 13% of its net income compared year over year. The technology giant was hit by the sharp decline in the demand for computers and printers. This case shows today that problems are not exclusive for the auto-makers, banks and housing sector.

. Is a good or bad idea to nationalize the main banks of the country?
. Is right decent people who bought sensible homes have to subsidize the mortgages of people who bought houses they could not afford?

- También el miércoles 18 de febrero, Hewlett-Packard informó sus últimos resultados financieros trimestrales con una caída de 13% en ingresos netos comparados año sobre año. El gigante tecnológico fue golpeado por una abrupta declinación en la demanda de computadores e impresoras. Este caso muestra que hoy los problemas no son exclusivos de los fabricantes de automóviles, los bancos y el sector de viviendas.

- On Friday, February 20, Latvia’s government fell, a new European victim of the growing economic and political turmoil in the wake of the international financial crisis.
Questions:
. Latvia is one of Eastern European countries that integrated the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Is this collapse a new opportunity for Russian’s ambitions?

- El viernes 20 de febrero, el gobierno de Letonia cayó convirtiéndose en una nueva víctima europea del creciente caos económico y político en el despertar de la crisis financiera internacional.

- The financial week ended with negative results on the Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrials Average lost 484.74 points, or 6.17% on the week closing at 7,365.67, a new record low in the history of this index. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite dropped 93.13 points, or 6.07%, closing the week at 1,441.23. Also S&P 500 and NYSE Composite closed lower than a week ago.
