¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a un nuevo número de Sunday Bilingual News, la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club! Hoy estamos entrando al segundo mes del 2009: febrero. ¿Se dieron cuenta que el año 2008 es ya parte de la historia?
January was a painful and bloody month. Every week came with a lot of news and more problems.
Enero fue un mes doloroso y sangriento. Cada semana llegó con muchas noticias y más problemas.
During the fourth week, President Barack Obama made the first efforts to find his route. He went to the Congress promoting his economic stimulus package but he didn’t change the mind of the Republican Block and 11 Democrats. He also spoke to the Arab world through a TV interview. And he criticized bankers for giving themselves $18.4 billion in bonuses in a moment when the finance businesses doesn’t run well.
Durante la cuarta semana, el Presidente Barack Obama hizo los primeros esfuerzos para encontrar su ruta. Fue al Congreso promoviendo su paquete de estímulo económico pero no cambió la forma de pensar del Bloque Republicano ni de 11 demócratas. También habló al mundo árabe a través de una entrevista de televisión. Y criticó a los banqueros que se dieron a ellos mismos primas por 18 mil 400 millones de dólares en un momento cuando los negocios financieros no andan bien.
But was Washington really the center of the world during this week? Maybe no… In Davos, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum 2009 began its sessions on January 28 with the attendance of more than 40 heads of state, governments and a high number of business leaders of different countries. More than 2,500 participants were attending the meeting.
¿Pero fue realmente Washington el centro del mundo durante esta semana? Quizás no… En Davos, Suiza, el Foro Económico Mundial 2009 comenzó sus sesiones el 28 de enero con la presencia de más de 40 cabezas de estado, gobiernos y un alto número de líderes de negocios de diferentes países. Más de 2.500 participantes estuvieron participando en esta reunión.
This year, Davos was more than an economic forum and tourist center. There, Turkey complained about Israel for the Gaza’s massacre. Russia and China blamed the United States for the world financial crisis. Mr. Putin also explained why his country cut the gas pipeline to Ukraine in the coldest days of December. Did you know the motto of the forum was: "Shaping the Post-Crisis World"? Till now, could we talk about "Post-Crisis"?
Este año, Davos fue más que un foro económico y un centro turístico. Allí, Turquía criticó a Israel por la masacre de Gaza. Rusia y China culparon a los Estados Unidos por la crisis financiera mundial. El Señor Putin también explicó porqué su país cortó el gasoducto a Ucrania en los días más fríos de diciembre. ¿Conocían que el lema del foro fue: “Modelando el Mundo Pos-Crisis”? Hasta ahora ¿podemos hablar sobre del Mundo de “Pos-Crisis”?
Meanwhile, during the last two weeks, Wall Street heard the cry of a big group of top executives, who explained to the investors why they didn’t achieve their revenues and net income forecasts during the fourth quarter of 2008 and how many layoffs they are planning. By the way, several days ago, Caterpillar said: "We will cut 20,000 jobs…". Now, it is planning 20,000 more...Do you have the painful list?
Mientras tanto, durante las dos últimas semanas, Wall Street escuchó el llanto de un gran grupo de altos ejecutivos, quienes explicaron a los inversores porqué ellos no alcanzaron los pronósticos de ventas e ingresos netos durante el cuarto trimestre 2008, adelantando cuántos despidos masivos están programando. Washington or Davos?
- The week began on Monday with massive layoffs announcements from Home Depot, Caterpillar, Sprint Nextel, Pfizer and Texas Instruments. These companies plan to cut more than 75,000 jobs in the United States and around the world.
Questions:
. What do you think about the massive layoff across different sectors of the economy? Could you understand this sickness? A lot of companies say they will cut 10%, 12%, 16% of their payroll.

- The financial week ended with negative results on the Wall Street markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average dropped 76.70 points, or 0.95%, on the week closing at 8,000.86. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite declined 0.87 points, or 0.06%, closing the week at 1,476.42.
