The second week in January was intense. The Gaza conflict and the cease-fire negotiations were headlines in the international sections of newspapers and TV programs. On the domestic side, the news about the pilot who landed an airplane with 150 passengers - no fatalities - on the Hudson River produced a lot of comments and emotional stories.
La segunda semana de enero fue intensa. El conflicto de Gaza y las negociaciones del alto al fuego fueron titulares de las secciones internacionales de los diarios y los programas de televisión. En el lado doméstico, la noticia acerca del piloto que acuatizó un avión con 150 pasajeros - sin víctimas - en el Río Hudson produjo muchos comentarios e historias emocionantes.
The economy didn’t give any opportunity for relaxing. Citigroup posted a net loss of $ 8.3 billion, while Bank of America published another net loss of $1.8 billion. Circuit City Stores, the nation’s, second biggest consumer electronics retailer, is liquidating its last 567 U.S. stores and more than 34,000 employees will loss their jobs.
La economía no dio ninguna oportunidad para descansar. Citigroup informó pérdidas netas por 8 mil 300 millones de dólares, mientras que Banco de América publicó otras pérdidas netas por 1 mil 800 millones de dólares. - The week began with bad news from different important companies that reduced their previous business forecasts for the quarter ended on last December. After that, Intel - semiconductor leader - posted revenues and net income of its fourth fiscal quarter of 2008. Its net income declined 89.70% year over year and its sales fell 23.21% also compared with the same period of a year ago.

. What do you think about the new “sickness” of the big companies? Nobody smiles when they publish their financial results
. If today, somebody offers you to be appointed as a CEO of a big company, do you say: “Yes!”?
. Do you suffer the same disease when you have to pay your bills for the electricity and utilities?
- La semana comenzó con malas noticias de diferentes compañías importantes que redujeron sus previos pronósticos de negocios para el trimestre finalizado en diciembre pasado. Después, Intel, líder en semiconductores, informó ventas e ingresos netos de su cuarto trimestre fiscal 2008. Sus ingresos netos declinaron 89,70% año tras año y sus ventas cayeron 23,21% también comparadas con el mismo período de un año atrás.

- On Thursday, January 15, the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 successfully executed one of the most technically challenging maneuvers, landing a commercial airplane on water without fatalities. The landing was on Hudson River, in front of New York City.

- On Friday, January 16, the financial week ended with negative results on the Wall Street markets despite a small recovery of the main indexes during the two last sessions. The Dow Jones Industrials Average dropped 317.96 points, or 3.70%, on the week closing at 8,281.22. Nasdaq Composite declined 17.49 points, or 1.16%, closing the week at 1,529.33.

. Are you buying some stocks? Normally, the analysts recommend you buy when the prices are low. Google shares closed Friday at $299.67, less 50% than a year ago.

- El viernes 16 de enero, la semana financiera finalizó con resultados negativos en los mercados de Wall Street a pesar de un pequeño recupero de los principales índices en las dos últimas sesiones. El índice Dow Jones Industrials Average dejó caer 317,96 puntos, o sea 3,70% en la semana, cerrando en 8.281,22. Nasdaq Composite declinó en 17,49 puntos, o sea 1,16%, cerrando la semana en 1.529,33.

- On Saturday, January 17, Israel announced a cease-fire in Gaza after three week of a war that has killed at least 1,200 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Hamas and the Palestinian groups accepted the cease-fire but they give Israeli troops a week to leave Gaza.

. Is it a fragile agreement or the beginning of a new peace treaty between Israel and Palestine?
