Hello! Welcome to a new issue of Sunday Bilingual News! This is the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a un nuevo número de Sunday Bilingual News! Esta es la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club.

The first week in January was very complicated. It began with the debate about the stimulus package of President Elect Barack Obama. The Gaza conflict showed both sides are using children and innocent population as hostage for their fighting. The December unemployment rate completed the picture of the 2008 economic collapse with very bad figures. And Wall Street stocks suffered the consequences with a very bad performance.

La primera semana de enero fue muy complicada. Comenzó con el debate acerca del paquete estímulo del Presidente Electo Barack Obama. El conflicto de Gaza mostró que ambas partes están usando chicos y población inocente como rehenes de su lucha. La tasa de desempleo de diciembre completo el cuadro del colapso económico del 2008 con muy malos números. Y las acciones de Wall Street sufrieron las consecuencias con muy mal rendimiento.

But all was not totally negative during the first days of 2009. In San Francisco, California, Apple opened Macworld with new initiatives and products. A day after, the International Consumer Electronics Show started with the kick off by Steve Ballmer - Microsoft CEO- delivering the pre-event keynote session.

Pero no todo fue totalmente negativo durante los primeros días del 2009. En San Francisco, California, Apple abrió Macworld con nuevas iniciativas y productos. During the week, technology executives and celebrities came to Las Vegas, Nevada, to announce new products and services, demonstrating how the technology always works to bring more innovation for the consumers.

ANALYSIS OF THE NEWS

- The week began with more news about the Israeli invasion of Gaza. On Saturday January 3, troops of Israel entered Gaza Strip with tanks and infantry. According to several sources, Hamas militants are using new tactics and traps to resist the invasion. They prepared the ground with numerous tunnels and booby traps. They are fighting in civilian clothes, in an urban battle unfolding in densely populated areas.
Questions:
. Will this invasion end with similar end to the Lebanon campaign in 2006 where the Israeli troops were ambushed by Hezbollah guerrillas?
. What will be the human cost of the urban war through the Gaza streets among children and innocent population?

- La semana comenzó con más noticias acerca de la invasión israelí de Gaza. El sábado 3 de enero, tropas de Israel entraron en la Franja de Gaza con tanques e infantería. De acuerdo con algunas fuentes, los militantes de Hamas están usando nuevas tácticas y trampas para resistir la invasión. Ellos prepararon el terreno con numerosos túneles y trampas explosivas. - On Tuesday, January 6, Apple Computer opened the doors of Macworld 2009, its annual conference and exhibition for users and partners, in San Francisco, California. As part of the event, Apple unveiled significant pricing and copyright changes to its iTunes Store, to continue as the dominant online music seller amid hard competition from Amazon.com and others.
In addition, it introduced the new 17-inch MacBook Pro, a mobile computer with revolutionary new built-in battery that delivers eight hours of use and 1,000 recharges. This computer includes a microprocessor 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB SDRAM memory, 320GB Serial ATA hard drive, three USB 2.0 ports, 1 FireWire 800 port and more features.

- El martes 6 de enero, Apple Computer abrió las puertas de Macworld 2009, su conferencia y exhibición anual para usuarios y socios, en San Francisco, California. Como parte del evento, Apple reveló cambios significativos en precios y derechos de autor en sus tiendas iTunes, para continuar como vendedor dominante de música en línea entre medio de una dura competencia de Amazon.com y otros.
Además, introdujo el nuevo MacBook Pro de pantalla de 17 pulgadas, un computador móvil con una revolucionaria batería incorporada que brinda ocho horas de uso y 1.000 de recargas. Este computador incluye un microprocesador Intel Core 2 Duo de 2,66 GHz, memoria SDRAM de 4Gbytes, disco duro de 320 Gbytes Serial ATA, 3 puertos USB 2.0, un puerto FireWire 800 y más características.

- On Wednesday, January 7, the International CES 2009 started in Las Vegas, Nevada. Steve Ballmer from Microsoft announced a preliminary version of Windows 7, the new operating system that will replace Windows Vista next year.
Craig Barrett, Intel chairman, talked about the technology’s role in emerging markets and how to create a global tech ecosystem.
John Chambers, Cisco CEO, demonstrated the role of networks contacting a doctor in Honduras who was able to take his vital statistics and deliver a diagnosis in Spanish and English through the Cisco´s Health Telepresence system.
Also during the show, Palm introduced a new smart-phone with an instinctive user interface to compete against Apple iPhone.

- El miércoles 7 de enero, el International CES 2009 comenzó en Las Vegas, Nevada. Steve Ballmer de Microsoft anunció una versión preliminar de Windows 7, el nuevo sistema operativo que reemplazará a Windows Vista en el próximo año. Craig Barrett, presidente del directorio de Intel, habló sobre el rol de la tecnología en los mercados emergentes y sobre como crear un ecosistema mundial de tecnología. - On Friday, January 9, the US Labor Department informed 524,000 jobs were lost in December, bringing the total for 2008 to 2.6 million. It was the 12th straight decline, following a drop of 584,000 in November. The unemployment rate jumped to 7.2%, the highest since January 1993.

- The financial week ended with negative results on the Wall Street markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average dropped 435.51 points, or 4.82%, on the week closing at 8,599.18. Nasdaq Composite declined 60.62 points, or 3.71%, closing the week at 1,571.59.
