Hello! Welcome to another issue of the Sunday Bilingual News! Today is a very special day. This is the first Sunday of November. We are at less than two days until the US Presidential Election. Did you remember to change the clock?

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a otro número del Sunday Bilingual News! Hoy es un día muy especial. Es el primer domingo de noviembre. Estamos a menos de dos días antes de la Elección Presidencial de los Estados Unidos. ¿Se acordó de cambiar la hora?

Doubtless, the main subject of the last days is the Election. In democracies, the vote is the most important way the citizens have to express themselves. Sometimes, our vote doesn’t change the bad things, but we have to try. It is a civil obligation we have in our countries, within our communities, with our people, with the future of our children and the next generations. The violence never stops the blood and fire… You see in the last days the new drama of Congo… Meanwhile, the “honest vote” in “freedom” could help to build new horizons. At least it is a way to express if you agree or not with the politicians and the government. For this reason, the vote against the “winners” if it is an honest vote is also important.

Sin duda, el principal tema de los últimos días es la Elección. En las democracias, el voto es la más importante forma que los ciudadanos tienen para expresarse por ellos mismos. A veces, nuestro voto no cambia las cosas malas, pero tenemos que tratarlo. Es una obligación civil que tenemos en nuestros países, con nuestras comunidades, con nuestra gente, con el futuro de nuestros hijos y las próximas generaciones. La violencia nunca para la sangre y el fuego… Ustedes ven en los últimos días el nuevo drama del Congo… Mientras tanto, el “voto honesto” en “libertad” puede ayudar a construir nuevos horizontes. Al menos, es la forma de expresar si ustedes están de acuerdo o no con los políticos y el gobierno. Por esta razón, el voto en contra de “ganadores” si es un voto honesto es también importante.

- While the economic recession is in the headlines of the newspapers worldwide, some countries such as Germany look for non-traditional markets to maintain its manufacturing lines in production and its business units in activity. Japan cut its interest rate for the first time in seven years. United Kingdom provokes Iceland’s anger by using an antiterrorism law to freeze British assets in a failing Icelandic bank. In the United States, a lot of companies published net losses in the last quarter ended on September 30, but Exxon Mobil posted a net income of $14.83 billion, historic record.

- Mientras la recesión económica está en los titulares de los periódicos a través del mundo, algunos países tales como Alemania buscan mercados no tradicionales para mantener sus líneas de manufactura en producción y sus unidades de negocios en actividad. Japón cortó su tasa de interés por primera vez en siete años. - The Democratic Republic of Congo is living in a new period of violence, one more in a long history of fighting since its independence in 1960. Despite the cease-fire between the troops of the government and rebels, the confusion reigns in the northeastern section of the country. 200,000 refugees had left the city of Goma without direction in the medium of the chaos. Goma is at approximately 11 miles from the crater of the active Nyiragongo Volcano and in the Congolese border with Rwanda. Do you remember the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 that was perpetrated by the Hutu rulers against the Tutsu population? Do you remember also the First and Second Congo Wars with the intervention of forces of Rwanda, Uganda and Congo and the Nyiragongo eruption in 2002?

- La República Democrática del Congo está viviendo un nuevo período de violencia, uno más en su larga historia de luchas desde su independencia en 1960. A pesar del cese de fuego entre las tropas del gobierno y los rebeldes, la confusión reina en la región noreste del país. 200.000 refugiados dejaron la ciudad de Goma sin rumbo en medio del caos. - During the last few days, a coalition of the six state governors sent a letter to the Treasury Secretary and Federal Reserve requesting immediate action to stabilize the auto industry of the United States. The governors of Michigan, Delaware, Kentucky, New York, Ohio and South Dakota want to clear the “road” for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler and avoid the collapse of an industry, a part of the foundation for the economy of the country for decades. The governors agree that is important to support our own industry in bad times, but the question is: Who will be next?

- En los últimos días, una coalición de seis gobernadores de los estados de la nación enviaron una carta al Secretario del Tesoro y a la Reserva Federal (Banco Central) requiriendo acción inmediata para estabilizar la industria automotriz de los Estados Unidos. Los gobernadores de Michigan, Delaware, Kentucky, Nueva York, Ohio y Dakota del Sur quieren despejar el “camino” para General Motors, Ford y Chrysler y evitar el colapso de una industria que fuera parte de las bases económicas del país por décadas. - Wall Street smiled in the last week of October. The main indexes of the New York markets recovered ground from the previous week decline. The famous Dow Jones Industrials Average grew 946.06 points, or 11.29% on the week, closing at 9325.10 on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite, an index very close to the technology sector, gained 168.92 points, or 10.88%, in the same period closing at 1720.95.

- Wall Street sonrió en la última semana de octubre. Los principales índices de los mercados de Nueva York recuperaron terreno respecto de la declinación de la semana previa. El famoso Dow Jones Industrials Average creció 946,06 puntos, o sea 11,29% en la semana, cerrando en 9.325,10 el viernes. El Nasdaq Composite, un índice muy cercano con el sector de tecnología, ganó 168,92 puntos, o sea 10,88% en el mismo período cerrando en 1.720,95.

- In the technological arena, the IBM Labs in Zurich, Switzerland, unveiled details of a new “stick” to protect computer’s users and banks from sophisticated hacker attacks. The researchers have designed an USB device to plug into a port of any computer. It creates a direct, secure virtual channel to a bank’s online transaction server, bypassing the PC, which could be infected by malicious software or susceptible to hacker attacks. The new device looks like a memory stick and has a small display and at least two control buttons (OK and Cancel). Inside, it includes software processing cryptographic algorithms.

- En la arena tecnológica, los Laboratorios de IBM en Zurich, Suiza, revelaron detalles de un nuevo “stick” para proteger a los usuarios de computación y a los bancos contra avanzados ataque de “hackers”. Los investigadores han diseñado un dispositivo USB que se enchufa en un puerto de cualquier computador. Este dispositivo crea un canal virtual directo y seguro con el servidor de transacciones en línea de un banco, evitando el PC, el cual puede estar infectado por programas con virus o susceptible a ataques de “hackers”. El nuevo dispositivo se parece a un “stick” de memoria y tiene un pequeño visor y al menos dos botones de control (Si y Cancelar). Por dentro, incluye un programa que procesa algoritmos criptográficos.

- Intel, the leader of the semiconductor industry, is making a$20 million dollar US investment in Troy Solar Holding, Co. Ltd, a Chinese provider of solar energy solutions. Troy, founded in 1993, has over 600 employees and a manufacturing plant of 40,000 square meters in Shenzhen. In addition, the chip maker is investing capital in NP Holding Limited, a Chinese enterprise dedicated to the research and development of massive electric energy storage equipment. As you see, despite the "ghosts" of the Great Depression, technology companies think in positive terms and solutions.

- Intel, el líder de la industria de semiconductores, está invirtiendo 20 millones de dólares norteamericanos en Troy Solar Holding, Co. Ltd, un proveedor chino de soluciones de energía solar. Democracia contra Violencia

In this issue we saw two very different pictures: the Election of the United States and the new cycle of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

En este número vimos dos imágenes muy diferentes: Elección de los Estados Unidos y el nuevo ciclo de violencia en la República Democrática del Congo.

In the first case, the “vote” is the way the citizens have to express their opinions and claims.

En el primer caso, el “voto” es el camino que los ciudadanos tienen para expresar sus opiniones y reclamos.

In the second case, the population who disagree with the rulers have only one way: to flee.

En el segundo caso, la población que está discrepa con los gobernantes tiene sólo una vía: huir.

In the democracies, the government change periodically through elections. In the countries where the violence reigns the changes come from new struggles and more violence. Do you remember in Congo the Mobutu's terror era? The assassination of Patrick Lumumba? The rebelion of Moise Tshombe in Katanga?

En las democracias, el gobierno cambia periodicamente a través de elecciones. Two days ago, I received a very special electronic card from Bob on Halloween. During that evening, I was very busy… All the children of my neighborhood came to my door for candies. I hope you lived many good moments too. I imagine Camilla with all her grand-children…She commented: “Halloween was funny here. The grandchildren became zombies, cowboys and army men.”
