Did you realize we are walking through October, only two months until 2008’s end? Maybe no, because September was a chaotic month… Every day something new happened. Also this last week was incredible about news…

¿Se dieron cuenta que estamos caminando a través de octubre, a sólo dos meses del fin del año 2008? Tal vez no, porque septiembre fue un mes caótico… Cada día algo nuevo sucedió. También esta última semana fue increíble acerca de las noticias…

What do you think were the most important news to discuss in our bilingual practice session?

¿Cuáles piensan fueron las noticias más importantes para discutir en nuestra sesión de práctica bilingüe?

- All the sequence of discussions and episodes till President Bush signed the new $700-billion bailout. Some analysts still don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. What is your opinion about this crucial subject?

- Toda la secuencia de discusiones y episodios hasta que el Presidente Bush firmó el nuevo rescate financiero por 700 mil millones de dólares. Algunos analistas hasta ahora no ven la luz del final del túnel. ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre este decisivo tema?

- September unemployment report: The American economy lost 159,000 jobs in September, the worst month in five years. The unemployment rate grew to 6.1%. Employment has diminished for nine consecutive months, eliminating 760,000 jobs, according to the Labor Department’s report. Could you measure the implications of this information?

- El informe de desempleo de septiembre: La economía de los Estados Unidos perdió 159.000 posiciones de trabajo en septiembre, el peor mes en cinco años. La tasa de desempleo creció hasta 6,10%. El empleo ha disminuido en nueve meses consecutivos, eliminando 760.000 trabajos de acuerdo con el informe del Departamento de Trabajo. ¿Pueden mensurar las implicaciones de esta información?

- Debate between the U.S. vice-presidential candidates Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Joe Biden: They discussed economy, social issues, Iraq, Iran and other subjects. They agreed to respect the decision of the couples of the same sex who want to live together, but they didn’t redefine the concept of marriage.

- El debate entre los candidatos a vicepresidente de los Estados Unidos, gobernadora de Alaska Sarah Palin y senador Joe Biden. Ellos discutieron acerca de economía, temas sociales, Irak, Irán y otros asuntos. Estuvieron de acuerdo en respetar la decisión de las parejas de un mismo sexo que quieren vivir juntas, pero no redefinieron el concepto de matrimonio.

- Battle for Wachovia between Wells Fargo and Citigroup. Big banks in action! Wells Fargo’s merger proposition for $15.1 billion all-stock came four days after Citigroup agreed to buy Wachovia at $2.1 billion. Citigroup was awaiting Wachovia at the “altar”, when its suitor said “Yes” to Wells Fargo.

- Batalla por Wachovia entre Wells Fargo y Citigroup. ¡Grandes bancos en acción! La proposición de fusión de Wels Fargo por 15 mil 100 millones de dólares en acciones llegó cuatro días después que Citigroup acordó comprar Wachovia por 2 mil 100 millones de dólares. Citigroup estaba esperando a Wachovia en el “altar”, cuando su pretendiente dijo “Si” a Wells Fargo.

- Somalia pirates ended their adventure without the 33 Russian battle tanks of the Ukrainian cargo ship Faina and the Islamic insurgents didn’t keep the dangerous booty. But according to different sources, there are thousands of emulators of “Sandokan” operating across the Indian Ocean near the African coast. Do you remember the famous novels written by Emilio Salgari chronicling the adventures of Sandokan and Yanez, the Tigers of Malaysia?

- Los piratas de Somalia terminaron su aventura sin los 33 tanques de batalla rusos del carguero ucraniano Faina y los insurgentes islámicos no se quedaron con el peligroso botín. - Steep fall of financial stocks and indexes in the United States and other important worldwide markets. European Leaders vowed to fight against the financial crisis. Also Dubai feels effects of the global drama. Do you know a night hotel in a luxurious suite of this Emirate frequently costs more than $ 12,000 US?

- Abrupta caída de las acciones financieras e índices de los Estados Unidos y otros importantes mercados mundiales. Líderes europeos juraron luchar contra la crisis financiera. También Dubai siente los efectos del drama mundial. ¿Conocen que una noche de hotel en un lujoso departamento de este Emirato frecuentemente cuesta más de 12.000 dólares americanos?

- The decline of the Wall Street’s indexes was a real drama. The Dow Jones Industrials Average fell 817.75 points on the week closing at 10325.38 on Friday. Nasdaq Composite dropped 235.95 points in the same period closing at 1947.39. And S&P 500 lost 113.78 closing at 1099.23.

- La declinación de los índices de Wall Street fue un drama real. Dow Jones Industrials Average cayó 817,75 puntos en una semana cerrando a 10.325,38 el viernes. Nasdaq Composite dejó caer 235,95 puntos en el mismo período cerrando a 1.947,90. Y S&P 500 perdió 113,78, cerrando en 1.099,23.

- The massive fall of the Wall Street’s bestsellers damaged also small investors who frequently put their savings in stock to allow them to live with the dividends. For example, in only a week, Apple’s shares fell from $128.24 on Friday September 26 to $97.07 last Friday, more than 23%. This is very bad because is not only a problem for the companies and the CEOs, it is a problem for the people as you and me who always believed in the market economy… Is this the “Goodbye” to the Wall Street’s era?

-La masiva caída de las acciones "éxito" de Wall Street perjudicó también a pequeños inversores que frecuentemente ponen sus ahorros en acciones para vivir con los dividendos. Por ejemplo, en sólo una semana, las acciones de Apple cayeron desde $128,24 el viernes 26 de septiembre a $97,07 el último viernes. Esto es muy malo porque no es sólo un problema para compañías y presidentes de empresas, es un problema para personas como ustedes y yo que siempre creyeron en la economía del mercado… ¿Es éste el “Adiós” a la era de Wall Street?

-And what about technology news?

. After more than a year that Apple launched its first iPhone, Nokia presented the 5800 XpressMusic, a music phone with touch-screen and numerous innovations to compete in the same market.

.At Vision Expo West, Las Vegas, Nevada, Canon is showing its CR-1 Non-Mydriatic Digital Retinal Camera with a redesigned optical system that achieves extremely detailed, high-resolution diagnostic images with its retina.

.Xerox unveiled its erasable paper at WIRED NextFest, in Chicago. The experimental paper can be printed on again and again. Within 24 hours, this paper erases itself and can be used again. Do you like the idea to always use the same paper?
.NASA scientists try to solve the question: When does it snow on Mars? The research suggests it snows during the Mars’ winter that is very cold with temperatures around 200 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. Could you fell comfortable with these temperatures?
