Hello! Welcome to the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club!

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club!

Every evening, after the close of the Wall Street markets, “trains” of emails full of information arrive at my mobile computer with a lot of figures, news releases and analyses. This last week was incredible about news and big question marks.

Cada tarde, después del cierre de los mercados de Wall Street, "trenes" de correos electrónicos desbordantes de información llegan a mi computador móvil con muchos números, comunicaciones de prensa y análisis. Esta última semana fue increíble por sus noticias y grandes interrogantes.

What do you think was the most important news to discuss in our bilingual practice session?

¿Cuál piensan ustedes fue la noticia más importante para discutir en nuestra sesión de práctica bilingüe?

- The $700- billion bailout in the Capitol Hill. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke explained to the lawmakers why the Government needs the bailout. Do you believe this bailout will solve the economic and financial problems of the country? Could you see the light at the end of the tunnel?

- El rescate financiero de 700 mil millones de dólares en el Congreso Nacional. El Secretario del Tesoro Henry Paulson y el Presidente de la Reserva Federal Ben Bernanke explicaron a los legisladores porqué el Gobierno necesita el rescate. ¿Piensan ustedes que este rescate dará solución a los problemas económicos y financieros del país? ¿Pueden ver la luz del final del túnel?

- First debate between the U.S. presidential candidates in Oxford, Mississippi. Senators John McCain and Barack Obama discussed the economy, Iraq, Iran, Russia and security issues.

- Primer debate entre los candidatos presidenciales de los Estados Unidos en Oxford, Misisipí. Los Senadores John McCain y Barack Obama discutieron sobre economía, Irak, Irán, Rusia y asuntos de seguridad.

- Iranian’s president hosted banquets in New York. Mr. Ahmadinejad used his trip to the United Nations General Assembly to meet with Iranian expatriates and talk with the press in a borrowed house. What do you think about President Ahmadinejad activities in New York? Personal question: Have you attended to any Persian's wedding party?

- El Presidente Iraní ofreció banquetes en Nueva York. El señor Ahmadinejad usó su viaje a la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas para encontrarse con expatriados iraníes y conversar con la prensa en casa prestada. ¿Qué piensan acerca de las actividades del Presidente Ahmadinejad en Nueva York? Pregunta personal: ¿Asistieron a alguna boda persa?

- A Chinese astronaut achieved the first spacewalk. Astronaut Zhai Zhigang while orbiting the Earth went out of the Shenzhou VII spacecraft and performed their nation’s first spacewalk. How do you match this news and the other news about the tainted milk? We have to hope Mr. Zhigang didn't carry tainted milk to the spacecraft...

- Un astronauta chino realizó la primera caminata especial. El astronauta Zhai Zhigang mientras orbitaba la Tierra salió de la nave espacial Shenzhou VII y realizó la primera caminata espacial de su nación. ¿Cómo ustedes relacionan esta noticia con la otra noticia acerca de la leche contaminada? Tenemos que esperar que el Sr. Zhigang no haya llevado leche contaminada a la nave espacial...

- President Chavez deals with Russia. The Venezuelan President traveled to Moscow on his second visit to Russia for strategic businesses. Every country has the right to deal with others but... Is it good business for the American continent to woo the Siberian's bears?

- El Presidente Chávez negocia con Rusia. El Presidente Venezolano viajó a Moscú en su segunda visita a Rusia por negocios estratégicos. Cada país tiene el derecho de negociar con otros pero… ¿Es un buen negocio para el Continente Americano cortejar con los Osos Siberianos?

- Somalia's pirates captured a cargo ship with military equipment including Russian battle tanks. Who is the buyer of this military equipment? Where will these battle tanks be used? Could you guess? In Latin America? Africa? Asia?

- Piratas de Somalia capturaron un buque carguero con equipamiento militar, incluso tanques de batalla rusos. ¿Quién es el comprador de ese equipamiento militar? ¿Dónde esos tanques serán usados? ¿Pueden adivinar? ¿En América Latina? ¿África? ¿Asia?

- Washington Mutual customers worried about their saving accounts despite J.P. Morgan Chase’s intervention and the FDIC’s deposit insurance. Meanwhile, Wachovia Bank looks for a buyer and talks with Wells Fargo, Citibank and Banco Santander from Spain. Is this the end of the bank dramas?

- Los clientes de Washington Mutual están preocupados por sus cuentas de ahorro a pesar de la intervención de J.P. Morgan Chase y del seguro defe depósitos del FDIC. Mientras tanto, Wachovia Bank busca un comprador y conversa con Wells Fargo, Citibank y Banco Santander de España. ¿Es este el fin de los dramas de los bancos?

- The first Android’s phone for Google was introduced by T-Mobile. The telecommunication carrier presented the smart-phone Android G1 that will come to the stores during October. Analysts and other observers expect it will be a competitor for Apple’s iPhone. Will you change your Nokia, Motorola... or Samsung classic phone for an Android? By the way, Nokia is ready to launch its first touch-screen phone.

- El primer teléfono Android de Google fue introducido por T-Mobile. La compañía de servicios telefónicos presentó el teléfono inteligente Android G1 que llegará a las tiendas durante octubre. Analistas y observadores esperan compita con el iPhone de Apple. ¿Cambiarán ustedes sus teléfonos clásicos Nokia, Motorola… Samsung por un Android? De paso, Nokia está lista para lanzar su primer teléfono con pantalla sensible al tacto.

- NASA’s supercomputers simulating hurricanes and other climate phenomena. Scientists of the Center for Computational Sciences of NASA will simulate and therefore better understand Earth’s climate and weather, the planet’s relationship with the sun, and the evolution of cosmic phenomena working on IBM iDataPlex System. Could this study reduce the malicious effects of the Katrinas, Wilmas and Ikes?

- Supercomputadores de la NASA en la simulación de huracanes y otros fenómenos climáticos. Científicos del Centro de Ciencias de la Computación de la NASA simularán y por lo tanto conocerán mejor el clima de la Tierra y el tiempo, las relaciones del planeta con el sol, y la evolución de fenómenos cósmicos trabajando en sistemas IBM iDataPlex. ¿Podrá este estudio reducir los efectos malévolos de los Katrinas, Filmas y Ikes?

- Actor Paul Newman died at 83 after a long bout with cancer. He acted in more than 65 movies over 50 years of his stellar career. He received the Oscar Award as the “Best Actor” for “The Color of Money”. Maybe, today you don't have a good feeling to talk about what will be the color of dollars in the future, but the Martin Scorsese’s film was not about the color of money after the bailout…

- El actor Paul Newman murió a los 83 años después de sufrir una larga enfermedad de cáncer. Actuó en más de 65 películas durante sus más de 50 años de carrera estelar. Recibió el Premio Oscar por el “Mejor Actor” por su actuación en “The Color of Money” (El color del dinero). Tal vez, hoy ustedes no están de buen humor para hablar sobre cual será el color de los dólares del futuro, pero la película de Martin Scorsese no fue acerca del color del dinero después del rescate financiero…

- Important decline of the Wall Street’s indexes. The Dow Jones Industrials Average fell 245.31 points on the week closing at 11143.13 on Friday. Nasdaq Composite dropped 90.56 points in the same period closing at 2183.34. And S&P 500 lost 42.07 points closing at 1213.01.

- Importante declinación de los índices de Wall Street. Dow Jones Industrials Average cayó 245,31 puntos durante la semana cerrando a 11.143,13 el viernes. Nasdaq Composite derramó 90,53 puntos en el mismo período para cerrar en 2.183,34. Y S&P 500 perdió 42,07 puntos cerrando en 1.213,01.

- RIMM sneezed and others had a big chill!!!! By the way, the stocks of Reseach In Motion fell $26.77, or 27.45% to close at $70.76 on Friday, after the Canadian company made a gloomy forecast for its next quarter. In the previous quarter, the BlackBerry’s father sold $2.6 billion, 88% up compared year over year, and also it gained $495 million in net income, 72% up also than a year ago. To remember, the shares of RIM were one of the tech “bestsellers” of 2007 together with Google, Baidu and Apple.

- ¡RIMM estornudó y otros contrajeron un gran resfrío! De paso, las acciones de Research In Motion cayeron $26,77 o sea 27,45% para cerrar en $70,76 el viernes después que la empresa canadiense dió un oscuro pronóstico respecto del próximo trimestre. En el trimestre previo, el padre de BlackBerry vendió 2 mil 600 millones de dólares, 88% arriba comparado año tras año, y además ganó $495 millones de dólares en ingresos netos, 72% más que un año atrás. Para recordar, las acciones de RIM fueron uno de los “éxitos” de la industria de la tecnología durante el año 2007 junto con las acciones de Google, Baidu y Apple.

Again the recent days were very intense, with stressful news and uncertainty, but we cannot lose hope for better moments. After all the storms, the sun and blue sky always comeback…

De nuevo, los días recientes fueron muy intensos, con noticias extenuantes e incertidumbre, pero no podemos perder la esperanza que vendrán tiempos mejores. Después de todas las tormentas, el sol y cielo azul siempre retornan…
