- The week began with more of the same: losses for banks, Taliban guerrillas 60 miles from the Pakistan capital, and the interrogation memos disclosed.

- On Wednesday, April 22, the United States celebrated Earth Day. This day was designated in 1970 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

- On Friday, April 24, the fears grew about the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico that killed al least twenty people and infected more than 1,000. After that outbreak, during the weekend, the U.S. government declared a public health emergency over swine flu because the disease is extending to our country too.

- El viernes 24 de abril crecieron los temores sobre la epidemia de gripe porcina en México que mató al menos a 20 personas y ha infectado a más de 1000. Después de aquella epidemia, durante el fin de semana, el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos declaró una emergencia pública de salud respecto de la gripe porcina porque esta enfermedad ha comenzado extenderse en nuestro país también.

- The financial week ended with mixed results on the New York markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average lost 55.04 points or 1.50% on the week closing at 8,076.29. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite raised 21.22 points, or 1.27%, closing the week at 1,694.29. Also during the week, S&P 500 declined 0.39% and NYSE Composite dropped 0.22%.

. Are you buying stock? The stock of Radio Shack – consumer electronics retailer with stores everywhere around the country - was one of winners of the week, growing 27.29% for the week to $13.34. Radio Shack sold more than $70 million in digital television converters in the last months.

La semana financiera finalizó con resultados mixtos en los mercados de Nueva York. El índice Dow Jones Industrials Average perdió 55,04 puntos, o sea 1,50% en la semana cerrando en 8.076,29. Every day, the smoke spreads in the sky in an area near restaurants, commercial stores and family houses in the city that is the home for a university that receives students of all over the country and from other parts of the world associated with the Mormon Church.

Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! After weeks of waiting for the smiles of the Sun God, we are enjoying nice sunny days in Teton Valley. What about the weather in your location?

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a una nueva comunicación del Spanish-English Club! Después de semanas esperando las sonrisas del Dios Sol, hoy estamos disfrutando un agradable día de sol en el Valle de los Tetones. ¿Cómo está el tiempo donde ustedes viven?

The last few days were rich in new political initiatives. President Obama met President Calderon of Mexico with the intention to fight together against the traffic of drugs and guns. In parallel with the approach to the big neighbor of the south, the Washington Administration showed clear intentions to open a dialogue with Cuba.

Los últimos días fueron ricos en nuevas iniciativas políticas. El Presidente Obama se reunió con el Presidente Calderón de México con la intención de luchar juntos contra el tráfico de drogas y armas. En paralelo con el acercamiento al gran vecino del sur, la Administración de Washington mostró claras intenciones de abrir el diálogo con Cuba.

In addition, President Obama traveled to the Fifth Summit of the Americas with a new perspective about our Latin American relationships. He said: “I didn’t come here to debate the past. I came here to deal with the future.”

Además, el Presidente Obama viajó a la Quinta Cumbre de América con una nueva perspectiva acerca de nuestras relaciones latinoamericanas. Él dijo: “Yo no vine aquí para debatir el pasado. Vine aquí para negociar con el futuro.”

About the previous Sunday Bilingual News issue, we have to clarify the use of the word “Pascua”. We can use it in plural only when we talk about the Christian and Jewish celebrations together. In other cases, we have to write in singular: “Feliz Pascua de Resurrección”, “Feliz Pascua Judía”. Frequently, we say: “Felices Pascuas” because we treat Jewish and Christian communities together. If we read the Bible, we see both celebrations are related.

Acerca del número anterior de Sunday Bilingual News, tenemos que aclarar sobre el uso de la palabra “Pascua”. Podemos usarla en plural solo cuando hablamos acerca de las celebraciones cristiana y judía en conjunto. En otros casos, tenemos que escribirla en singular: “Feliz Pascua de Resurrección”, “Feliz Pascua Judía”. Frecuentemente, nosotros decimos: “Felices Pascuas” porque tratamos a las comunidades judía y cristiana conjuntamente. - On Monday, April 13, the Obama administration announced a series of changes in US policy to reach out to the Cuban people in support of their desire to freely determine their country’s future.

The Japanese technology leader announced the development of a “sentence characteristic distribution calculation method” that extracts “opinion sentences” from written text which expresses the feelings or subjective views of a writer, which are concerned with a specific issue.

El líder tecnológico japonés anunció el desarrollo de un método de cálculo de distribución de características de una oración” que extrae opiniones de oraciones desde texto escrito, el cual expresa sentimientos o puntos subjetivos de un escritor, en relación con un tema específico.

For example, this method could determine an individual’s ideas, calculate evaluation scores, or determine the ratio of approval versus disapproval regarding a certain event, product, or service, or action, from information on the Internet, such as blogs, electronic bulletin boards, questionnaires data, or records or inquiries at call centers.

The company thinks that the new technology advances over previous ones in deeper techniques about subjectivity. It can identify the positive and negative aspects of subject evaluation. NEC plans to apply these technologies in new search services, analysis services for marketing activities, customer relationship management solutions, and to strengthen research and development activities aimed at further expanding these application fields in the future.

La compañía piensa que la nueva tecnología avanza sobre otras previas en técnicas más profundas sobre subjetividad. Puede identificar aspectos positivos y negativos de la evaluación de temas. The new machine shows again how the Internet and the digital messages give "raw materials" to create meta-universes using your own words, your own thinking, and capturing feelings that will be the trigger to knock on your door with a candy-bar when you need something sweet, or with an aspirin when you a have headache and are in a bad mood.

- The week began with the news about the last part of the President Obama trip across Europe and Middle-East. The President visited Turkey and met Iraqi leaders in Baghdad pushing for political solutions. The stop in Iraq was an unannounced visit.
Questions:
. From your perspective, was it good or bad President Obama talked to students in Istanbul?
. Do you think they understood the openness of the President?
. Is it possible for dialogue between Muslims and Christians after a long history of fights?

- On Monday, April 6, a high-magnitude earthquake shook central Italy producing serious damages in the city of L’Aquila. More than 20,000 people have lost their homes. The death toll was more than 200.

- Since Wednesday, every day was a long day waiting news about the life of Captain Richard Philips in the hands of four pirates. Time really was an eternity. The crew of USS Bainbridge war ship observing the five men in a lifeboat during hard negotiations to resolve the incident peacefully. After tensions escalated between the pirates and the negotiators, on Sunday, US Navy SEAL snipers killed 3 pirates and the captain was freed.
Questions:
. Could you imagine the days of tensions lived by Captain Philips? In this kind of crime, “time” is a double-edged sword. Sometimes, “fatigue” accelerates causing bad endings.

- Desde el miércoles, cada día fue un largo día esperando noticias sobre la vida del Capitán Richard Philips en las manos de cuatro piratas. El tiempo fue realmente una eternidad. La tripulación del barco de guerra norteamericano observaba a los cinco hombres en un bote salvavidas durante largas negociaciones para resolver el incidente pacíficamente. . What do you think about the Administration conditions to help the U.S. auto industry?
. Do you believe it is risky or not as the White House takes direct action about who has to go out of a company?
. Do you see similarity in the case of our auto industry with actions of other governments around the world?

The alliance between General Electric and Intel Corporation showed a very positive face in a stressful week. Two companies with previous experience in complex devices and systems decided to put together their knowledge in health-care to embrace a new interesting project.
