Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! How are you today? Again Sunday Bilingual News comes back to propose a session of bilingual practice in Spanish and English.

¡Hola!

The news of the last few days was dominated by President Obama’s trip across strategic Asian countries and the health care debate in the Senate. Wall Street closed the week with mixed figures showing the concern of Main Street for the unemployment drama.

Today is a gloomy anniversary. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.

For you, what was the most important news of the week?

- China Trip Assessment: The analysts say the meetings between President Obama and President Hu Jintao didn’t achieve any concrete results. The observers think the conversations were not productive for the United States and the Western countries. What do you think?

- Open health care debate in the Senate: The Senate voted on Saturday to begin full debate of major health care legislation. Is this step the beginning of the end or end of the beginning?

- Discussion about the future of the Afghanistan war: A lot of observers think President Obama will make his decision about this war. Some sources say the United States and NATO are in talks for a coordinated new Afghan strategy with the commitment to send thousands of additional troops. Will the other members of the NATO send troops or only good feelings?

- Criticism against Secretary Geithner: Political frustration over Wall Street’s rescue and high unemployment moved members of Congress to request more realistic initiatives from Secretary Geithner. Do you think the Treasury Secretary has to resign?

Algorithm Competes with Our Neurons

Algoritmos compete con nuestras neuronas

For my side, I have other important news that nobody published in the main papers of the country till now.

At SC 09, the supercomputing conference, in Portland, OR, November 18, IBM announced significant progress toward creating a computer system that simulates and emulates the brain’s abilities for sensation, perception, action, interaction, and cognition.

The IBM scientists in collaboration with Stanford University created BlueMatter - new algorithm - that has achieved significant advances in large-scale cortical simulation.

Also working between IBM Research-Almaden and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the scientists have performed the first near real-time cortical simulation of the brain that exceeds the scale of a cat cortex and contains 1 billion neurons and 10 trillion individual learning synapse.

According to the sources, these advancements will provide a unique workbench for exploring the computational dynamics of the brain. This achievement is the start of new kinds of computing systems that will be imbued with integrated information real-time in a dependent context, and with the capacity to work in the ambiguity and complexity of the real-world environments.

In addition, the new computers will be more compact than the current technology and they will work with low power energy.

In summary, the new cognitive computers could quickly and accurately put together the disparate pieces of the big complex puzzle, helping business decision makers come to a logical response.

Do you believe the computers could replace the human beings everywhere? Patty

I don't believe the computers could replace the human brain but they are a good tool to solve a lot of problems and improve our lives. Rich

I believe the computers are changing the behaviors of the people in different directions. But this not imply a total replacement of the human being. Tom

But the computers are changing also the behaviors of the people. Today we need computers for all. Rob
