Sunday Bilingual News

From Driggs, Idaho

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to another Sunday Bilingual News! Did you enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday?

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a otro Sunday Bilingual News!

As you know, the next holiday is Christmas. Maybe we will have fewer presents than previous years, but it is always a nice celebration to share with the family and friends.

This year, Santa only looks for bargains…. He/She doesn’t have money according to the first surveys. eBay, Amazon.com and others forecasted lower levels of sales during the Holidays.

But it is not a bad idea to learn to live frugally. The current economic crisis is a good lesson for all the people borrowing money that they can’t pay back; buying houses and cars they can’t afford; running up plastic card debt like crazy.

What about the news on the last days?
- Mumbai’s terrorist attack,
- Cabinet of President Elect Barack Obama,
- Good performance of the stocks on Wall Street,
- Thailand protesters shut down Bangkok airport,
- ...

- …

- The terrorist attack on strategic buildings of Mumbai was a new demonstration of the violence worldwide. But the history of this Indian city used to be known as Bombay shows other sectarian violent actions in the last decades. The riots of 1992-93 caused extensive loss of life and property. On July 2006 several bombs exploded on the Mumbai Suburban Railway train killing two hundred people. In this assault, the difference was in the targets attacked: international hotels, a Jewish temple and tourism sectors of the city in a very well organized and synchronized operation. What were the main goals of this attack? Some observers see behind the attack a devilish plan to discredit the country as a world center of business, finance, and technology research.

- President Elect Barack Obama was very active during the week naming key economic advisors to help him and speaking in three press conferences about his first program when he assumes the Presidency of the United States next January 20.

- Some liberals don’t understand how the President Elect will coordinate strong personalities in a unique team, but Wall Street gave its first approval. The Dow Jones Industrials Average grew 782.62 points, or 9.73% on the week, closing at 8,829.04 on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite gained 151.22 points, or 10.92%, in the same period closing at 1,535.57. Do you agree with Wall Street this time?

The Sun God is coming back...
El Dios Sol está retornando...

On November 25, IBM published its third annual “Next Five in Five”, a list of the innovations that have the potential to change the way people work, live and play over the next five years. Could you guess, what was the first subject on the list?

The new annual analysis of the innovations in five years says: “… Solar technology will be built into asphalt, paint and windows.” “Until now, the materials and the process of producing solar cells to convert into energy have been too costly for widespread adoption. But now this is changing with the creation of “thin-film” solar cells, a new type of cost-efficient solar cell that can be 100 times thinner than silicon-wafer cells and produced at a lower cost. These new thin-film solar cells can be “printed” and arranged on a flexible surface, suitable for not only the tops, but also the sides of buildings, tinted windows, cell phones, notebook computers, cars, and even clothing.”

What do you think about the prediction? Do you think this study is realistic, or another science-fiction novel? Could you imagine solar cells in the windows of your bedroom, in the door to the garden, in your own clothes? The Sun God is coming back with the best of a deity, the new energy source for our life.

Maybe we don’t need to wait five years to install solar cells in your house. First Solar, Inc. is working on a program named SolarCity to implement rooftop applications of photovoltaic modules that capture solar energy and convert it to electricity in homes and small businesses. The program began in Arizona, California and Oregon. This company plans to expand SolarCity into additional states in 2009 and 2010.

"When you write something like you did above, it insinuates that 'they' are not 'us' in a sense. In other words, the term 'we' would be most appropriate--whether you fall into the category or not. ALL of us are guilty of overspending at one time or the other in our lifetimes--be it an emergency or lust for a luxury item. Holidays in the U.S.A. are nothing more than 'commercial' niceties which we have brought on ourselves instead of seeking the real meaning of Christmas--Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We are approaching hard and scary times and all of us should be aware of what is about to happen. By reading and re-reading the book of Revelations (find a book in laymen's terms is best) one will realize that this world is short lived. Our leaders are preparing us for the worst to come and yet we worry about buying each other gifts? We should spend time with our families and enjoy each others company and eat merrily while we can and be thankful for that much. Material things are why we are in the mess we're in today, people. Seek what is in your heart and follow it--for our days grow shorter and shorter. May God Bless Us All for the 'lean years' are upon us." Tina.

Sunday Bilingual News - Special Edition

From Driggs, Idaho

Good morning, Friends:

Happy Thanksgiving Day! Today is a special day in the United States. It is one of the most important holidays of the country.

This celebration is important not only thinking about a dinner with special foods. Always the family meetings are important, but Thanksgiving Day is much more that a good turkey dinner.

Please think a little about the original “roots” of the celebration. Maybe, in the future, when the current economic and financial crisis ends, the survivors have to reinvent their Thanksgiving Day… How many people cannot celebrate this Day with a smile on their faces because they lost their jobs recently?

My best wishes to all the members of the Spanish-English Club, their families and friends!

Today, I have a special question for you: Could the scientists create a system to simulate and emulate our brain’s abilities for sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition?

IBM Research and five leading universities are working to create new low-power consumption and compact size computing systems that are expected to simulate and emulate the brain’s abilities for sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition.

During decades, universities and technology companies developed big and expensive computers known as “supercomputers” able to process millions and millions of data, solve complex mathematic algorithms and make critical decisions in an accurate way and in a short time.

Also in the labs, computer makers and universities created metal-creatures known as “robots” able to interact with human beings. They have basic capacities of perception and cognition, rudimentary levels of sensation, and store energy to act according to programming patterns.

IBM and a group of universities have been received $4.9 million in funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the first phase of the SyNAPSE initiative to create low-power, compact computers that approach mammalian-scale intelligence.

The project seeks to build computers based on the insights of the brain. Normally, human beings need time to capture and analyze data, and the decisions or actions are delayed. Computers with higher levels of cognition, perception, sensation and interaction promise fast integration and analysis of vast amounts of data from many sources, also in sensitive ways, in the blink of an eye.

What do you think about this new initiative? Could the scientists create compact systems with all the abilities of our brains but faster than ours? Do you think this kind of research violate ethical principles? From your perspective, what are the pros and cons of new low-power compact systems with all our cognition, perception, sensation and interaction abilities?

OTHER MATTERS - OTROS ASUNTOS

The Big Three auto makers didn’t have any success in their Congressional hearing, but different observers agree they are suffering from their own mistakes.

Do you believe the current problems of General Motors are only the result of the financial crisis? Do you believe that the powerful auto unions were also a part of the problem? Several days ago, in interview for the "News Hour with Jim Lehrer" program, its CEO said the company didn’t think to produce green cars before because the gasoline was cheaper… Big giants but with small vision!

Other bad news: according to some sources, the Ku Klux Klan is emerging again after the Presidential Election. A cell based in Bogaluse, Louisiana produced different incidents since November 4 election. Why does the color of the skin continue creating big problems among some people?

After two months of extreme volatility, Wall Street suffered another deep fall in the last five days. The Dow Jones Industrials Average declined 450.80 points, or 5.31% on the week closing at 8046.42 on Friday despite the climb of the last day. Same situation with Nasdaq Composite. This index dropped 132.50 points, or 8.74%, closing the week at 1374.35.

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to another issue of the Sunday Bilingual News! This is the third Sunday of the month, at only eleven days until Thanksgiving holiday.

¡Hola!

November is like running through a tunnel with a lot of curves. I hope you are only observers of this mess:

- The car makers ask for help because they don’t want to file for U.S. Bankruptcy protection.
- Residents of Southern California are suffering from wildfire destruction in an extended area of rich properties and trailer parks.
-Wall Street’s stocks can’t find the way to get out of the abyss.
- New attacks with portable bombs hit the Iraqi cities, while Afghanistan and Pakistan complain about the death of innocent people.

However, it is not all bad. Zac Sunderland, a solo teenager sailor, 16, arrived at Mauritius last week. He left Marina Del Rey, California on June 14, 2008. Zac wants to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

Additionally, leaders of 20 countries met in Washington, D.C. and they agreed to work together to revive their economies and halt the global crisis.

After this short summary, do you have more headlines in your screen? What are the most important topics to discuss in our bilingual practice of this issue?

- General Motors, Ford and Chrysler asked for a rescue package from the Government. Some leaders of the Congress agreed to give to the auto makers a bailout of $25 billion. Despite this, the initiative generated hard opposition from other members of Congress. What do you think about the controversial subject? Years ago, when some airlines had financial problems, they filed for Chapter 11 and rebuilt their businesses. Before that, other corporate giants such as PanAm died. Chrysler also received a bailout in the past.

- Montecito, in Spanish means “small wood”, is the center of a “big” hell now. The fire consumed more than 110 residences and 600 mobile homes from Santa Barbara to Orange County, California. Some sources say the wind and oil-rich eucalyptus trees helped to extend the inferno. Several years ago, when I drove across Santa Barbara, I said to myself, this area is a “paradise”, near the ocean, with green covered hills, excellent weather, and beautiful houses. Really, is it a paradise?

- Something not frequently done, the leaders of 20 countries agreed Saturday to work together to revive their economies. But the sessions were not a party or a celebration. Some of the participants criticized the United States for its responsibility in the global financial crisis. Do you agree? Do you believe that the others are only victims? The most important result is the group planned its next meeting for April 30, 2009.

On the November 4, the country voted for changes. Democrat, Republican and Independent voters agreed we need changes. The majority of voters in the United States want a different future.

The first question is: What kind of changes the citizens are looking for? Apparently, they want changes in politics, economy and social issues.

The second question is: Why the voters want changes in the country? We can guess the changes are because things don’t run well…

A rich country with a lot of resources, a proud nation for its history and its records, a land of freedom and strong successes was knocked for successive evils and misfortunes in the last few years.

On September 11, 2001, government, institutions and people learned the United States was losing the category of “safe paradise” of freedom that was before. But the terrorism of streets and the cities was not invented by Al Qaeda. With different “faces” and “denominations” this same kind terrorism whipped other countries and regions, since the 70s and 80s.

After the Twin Towers of New York collapsed, all the country clamored for security and war against the devils wherever they have hidden.

Meanwhile, other evils began to undermine the foundation of our economy with very subtle advances. The winds of the globalization extended our markets to the territories of our old enemies… But the same winds colonized us with: “Made in China”… “Made in China”…“Made in India”… “Made in Pakistan”… “Made in Russia”… Made in Vietnam”…

The reality, the globalization didn’t begin in 2000 or 2001, or 2002…The first step of the global business came long time ago, when the Nixon Administration opened the dialogue with the Popular Republic of China for some commercial exchanges… It was the one of first experiences to deal with a non-friendly country with its own agenda. The other experience was with Russia

Till that moment, we had a longer experience dealing with our friends with similar agenda or without agenda, but the globalization phenomenon couldn’t lay the foundations excluding non-friends with or without their own agendas. It was a necessary risk to walk across the alleys of the Dragon and the marshes of the Monsoons.

The other factor, the technology and Internet came first with all the winds of innovation and the benefits to communicate with everybody from one corner to another of the planet… Good to make new friends who speak other languages… Good to build “bridges” with other cultures… Excellent way to buy exotic products through eBay… Excellent too, to deploy maps with the details of routes and streets to everywhere.

But technology was also to open doors to other devils, from software hackers to financial operators without clear rules and ethic behavior.

While we were dreaming to buy houses and properties with more expensive mortgages with little regard for the ability to pay them, to own every year new expensive cars, to enjoy romantic vacations in the Caribbean islands, or make businesses in the luxury suites at the top of the skyscrapers of Dubai, or Kuala Lumpur, the economic crisis grew.

Yes, the economic crisis entered into our lives with several important indicators: forced foreclosures, high oil prices, high food prices, inflation, the credit crisis and the bankruptcy of several large and well established investment banks, increased unemployment and the decline of the best stocks of Wall Street.

Of course, economy and finance don’t walk using different routes. Both are very connected. And when the economy falls or the financial institutions extend “red” alarms, the social issues come to the forefront too.

After all, we recently realized we were walking long distances through the alleys of the Dragon and the labyrinths of Internet without enough skills to balance risks and benefits in a changing world immersed in the globalization and Internet revolutions, and threatened by the actions of Al Qaeda-1, Al Qaeda-2… or Al Qaeda-n.

During the dramatic moments of the last months, everybody understood we need changes, because we cannot dream to continue growing inside the country if our factories are running for others in other lands with our capital, our know-how, our brands, but without the “Made in USA” label. We cannot dream to pay our debts with hundreds of credit cards and plastics without savings. We cannot forecast our long term growth only based on government stimuli.

But the changes we need to implement are not only responsibility of others. We cannot claim the politicians elected on November 4 can make all the changes.

Please don’t cry for America, cry for all of us that till now are expending time ascertaining for the “skin” of the others, cry for all of us when we refuse to speak to citizens with a different “accent”, cry for all of us when we underrate the “experience” and “willingness” of the 50 years old, and cry also for all of us without deep feelings for the country, without roots in our culture, without sensitive soul for our brothers and sisters.

In the years to come, we have to learn another language, the language of patience, the language of humility, the language of equilibrium including when we deal with our enemies or when we whisper with our angels.

After the Election Day, IBM CEO and chairman Sam Palmisano introduced his proposition for the "CHANGES" to corporate leaders in his keynote address “A Smarter Planet: The Next Leadership Agenda”.

As Mr. Palmisano explained, technology could help us to build better future, but we have to all walk together in the same direction and with the same resolution. The flags of CHANGE are with us… Please walk ahead!!!

Sunday Bilingual News

From Driggs, Idaho

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to another issue of the Sunday Bilingual News! Today is a very special day. This is the first Sunday of November. We are at less than two days until the US Presidential Election. Did you remember to change the clock?

¡Hola!

Doubtless, the main subject of the last days is the Election. In democracies, the vote is the most important way the citizens have to express themselves. Sometimes, our vote doesn’t change the bad things, but we have to try. It is a civil obligation we have in our countries, within our communities, with our people, with the future of our children and the next generations. The violence never stops the blood and fire… You see in the last days the new drama of Congo… Meanwhile, the “honest vote” in “freedom” could help to build new horizons. At least it is a way to express if you agree or not with the politicians and the government. For this reason, the vote against the “winners” if it is an honest vote is also important.

What other topics are important to discuss in our bilingual practice session of this Sunday Bilingual News?

- While the economic recession is in the headlines of the newspapers worldwide, some countries such as Germany look for non-traditional markets to maintain its manufacturing lines in production and its business units in activity. Japan cut its interest rate for the first time in seven years. United Kingdom provokes Iceland’s anger by using an antiterrorism law to freeze British assets in a failing Icelandic bank. In the United States, a lot of companies published net losses in the last quarter ended on September 30, but Exxon Mobil posted a net income of $14.83 billion, historic record.

- The Democratic Republic of Congo is living in a new period of violence, one more in a long history of fighting since its independence in 1960. Despite the cease-fire between the troops of the government and rebels, the confusion reigns in the northeastern section of the country. 200,000 refugees had left the city of Goma without direction in the medium of the chaos. Goma is at approximately 11 miles from the crater of the active Nyiragongo Volcano and in the Congolese border with Rwanda. Do you remember the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 that was perpetrated by the Hutu rulers against the Tutsu population? Do you remember also the First and Second Congo Wars with the intervention of forces of Rwanda, Uganda and Congo and the Nyiragongo eruption in 2002?

- During the last few days, a coalition of the six state governors sent a letter to the Treasury Secretary and Federal Reserve requesting immediate action to stabilize the auto industry of the United States. The governors of Michigan, Delaware, Kentucky, New York, Ohio and South Dakota want to clear the “road” for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler and avoid the collapse of an industry, a part of the foundation for the economy of the country for decades. The governors agree that is important to support our own industry in bad times, but the question is: Who will be next?

- Wall Street smiled in the last week of October. The main indexes of the New York markets recovered ground from the previous week decline. The famous Dow Jones Industrials Average grew 946.06 points, or 11.29% on the week, closing at 9325.10 on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite, an index very close to the technology sector, gained 168.92 points, or 10.88%, in the same period closing at 1720.95.

- In the technological arena, the IBM Labs in Zurich, Switzerland, unveiled details of a new “stick” to protect computer’s users and banks from sophisticated hacker attacks. The researchers have designed an USB device to plug into a port of any computer. It creates a direct, secure virtual channel to a bank’s online transaction server, bypassing the PC, which could be infected by malicious software or susceptible to hacker attacks. The new device looks like a memory stick and has a small display and at least two control buttons (OK and Cancel). Inside, it includes software processing cryptographic algorithms.

- Intel, the leader of the semiconductor industry, is making a$20 million dollar US investment in Troy Solar Holding, Co. Ltd, a Chinese provider of solar energy solutions. Troy, founded in 1993, has over 600 employees and a manufacturing plant of 40,000 square meters in Shenzhen. In addition, the chip maker is investing capital in NP Holding Limited, a Chinese enterprise dedicated to the research and development of massive electric energy storage equipment. As you see, despite the "ghosts" of the Great Depression, technology companies think in positive terms and solutions.

Democracy versus Violence

Democracia contra Violencia

In this issue we saw two very different pictures: the Election of the United States and the new cycle of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the first case, the “vote” is the way the citizens have to express their opinions and claims.

In the second case, the population who disagree with the rulers have only one way: to flee.

In the democracies, the government change periodically through elections. In the countries where the violence reigns the changes come from new struggles and more violence. Do you remember in Congo the Mobutu's terror era? The assassination of Patrick Lumumba? The rebelion of Moise Tshombe in Katanga?

Two days ago, I received a very special electronic card from Bob on Halloween. During that evening, I was very busy… All the children of my neighborhood came to my door for candies. I hope you lived many good moments too. I imagine Camilla with all her grand-children…She commented: “Halloween was funny here. The grandchildren became zombies, cowboys and army men.”
