Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication of the Spanish-English Club! During the past week we talked a lot about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and BP. Till now, this subject is one of the headlines of the newspapers and TV.
¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a una nueva comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club! Durante la semana pasada nosotros hablamos mucho acerca del derrame de petróleo en el Golfo de México y BP. Hasta ahora, este tema es uno de los titulares de los diarios y la televisión.
What were the most important issues of the last few days? Yes, again the same subjects of previous weeks continued in the headlines: Afghanistan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan' violence, new tornadoes across the country, Mexico’s drug war, the primaries for the November elections, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
¿Cuáles fueron los más importantes asuntos de los últimos días? Si, de nuevo los mismos temas de semanas previas continuaron en los titulares: Afganistán, Irak, la violencia en Kyrgyzstan, más tornados a través del país, la guerra contra la droga de México, las primarias para las elecciones de noviembre, y la Copa Mundial FIFA 2010.
What do you think? Did you like the aggressive attitude of President Obama pushing BP to offer $20 billion in compensation of the Gulf of Mexico’s damages? Did you like the apology of the Texas Representative Joe Barton? Did you read the article published by Wall Street Journal explaining BP PLC had used a deep well design that has been called “risky” by Congressional investigators?
¿Qué piensan ustedes? ¿Les agradó la agresiva actitud del Presidente Obama empujando a BP a ofrecer 20 mil millones de dólares en compensación de los daños del Golfo de México? ¿Les agradaron las disculpas del Representante de Texas Joe Barton? ¿Leyeron el artículo publicado por Wall Street Journal explicando que BP PLC ha usado un diseño de pozo profundo que ha sido llamado “riesgoso” por los investigadores del Congreso?
But no all the issues were bad during the last few weeks. On June 15, Apple received more than 600,000 pre-orders of its new iPhone 4 that will be delivered very soon. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has even taken in a single day and was far higher than the company expected. Days before, the same Apple said it sold two million iPads - its digital tablet – in less than 60 days. Could you imagine how many digital devices are being sold now?
Pero no todos los temas fueron malos durante las últimas semanas. El 15 de junio Apple recibió más de 600.000 órdenes de compra previas de su nuevo iPhone 4 que será liberado muy pronto. Fue el número más grande de órdenes previas que Apple haya recibido en un solo día y por lejos más alto que lo que la compañía esperaba. Días antes, la misma Apple dijo que vendió dos millones de iPads – sus tableros digitales – en menos de 60 días. ¿Se pueden imaginar cuántos dispositivos digitales han sido vendidos hasta ahora?
Definitely, the new digital devices are gaining room in the technology arena. A lot of analysts think the smart-phones and digital tablets will continue growing despite economic problems. Every day we learn about new products and advanced features in a race that looks without limits. Will the new and more powerful tablets decrease the demand for desktop and laptop computers? Steve Jobs – Apple’s leader – thinks so!
Definitivamente, los nuevos dispositivos digitales están ganando espacio en la arena de la tecnología. Muchos analistas piensan que los teléfonos inteligentes y los tableros digitales continuarán creciendo a pesar de los problemas económicos. Cada día nos enteramos sobre nuevos productos y avanzadas características en una carrera que parece no tener límites. ¿Los nuevos y más poderosos tableros declinarán la demanda de computadores de escritorio y móviles? ¡Steve Jobs – líder de Apple – piensa así!

Another interesting subject of the last few days is the opening of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a center of virtual medical technology for the troops of the United States. Today, June 20, an article published by the US Defense Department comments Motek Medical and Polycom Telemedicine Solutions donated a computer assisted rehabilitation system to allow patients to work through a variety of skills with the focus on promoting resilience and recovery. Troops returning from war will work through post-traumatic stress symptoms in a carefully monitored virtual environment.
Otro tema interesante de los últimos días es la apertura del Nacional Intrepid Center of Excellence, un centro de tecnología médica virtual para las tropas de los Estados Unidos. Hoy, 20 de junio, un artículo publicado por el Departamento de Defensa de los Estados Unidos comenta que Motek Medical y Polycom Telemedicine Solutions donaron un sistema de rehabilitación asistida por computador que permite que los pacientes trabajen a través de una variedad de destrezas con el foco de promover resistencia y recupero. Las tropas retornando de la guerra trabajarán síntomas de presión post-traumática en un ambiente virtual controlado cuidadosamente.
The CAREN (Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment) system of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence was developed by two companies with experience in medical technology. Motek Medical produces revolutionary technology for the healthcare sector integrating medical solutions for orthopedic, neurological and rehabilitation use. Polycom has expertise in video and voice communication solutions.
El sistema CAREN (Ambiente de rehabilitación asistida por computador) del Nacional Intrepid Center of Excellence fue desarrollado por dos compañías con experiencia en tecnología médica. Motek Medical produce revolucionaria tecnología para el sector de salud integrando soluciones médicas para el uso en ortopedia, neurología y rehabilitación. Polycom tiene experiencia en soluciones de comunicación de video y voz.
By the way, Motek Medical is a software company founded in the Netherlands in 1998, with a lot of knowledge about medical and research systems connected to human balance and locomotion. Some of its customers are: Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas (USA), Military Rehabilitation Center in Doorn (Netherlands), SHEBA Medical Center in Tel Aviv (Israel), John Moores University in Liverpool (UK), and McGill University in Montreal (Canada).
