During the last few weeks, it was possible to read several articles about the problems of the education across the country. Maybe, the end of the school year 2008-2009 helped to review the system and its deficiencies. Behind the smiles of the graduates and their parents, the observers see critical lacks.
Durante las últimas semanas, fue posible leer algunos artículos acerca de los problemas de la educación a través del país. Quizás, el fin del año escolar 2008-2009 ayudó a examinar el sistema y sus deficiencias. Detrás de las sonrisas de los graduados y sus padres, los observadores ven críticas falencias.
For the other side, the analysis of the news showed a long list of events in the domestic and international spheres.
Por otro lado, el análisis de las noticias mostró una larga lista de eventos en las esferas interna e internacional.
In the international sphere, three important elections – European Union, Lebanon and Iran – reflected the diversity of the worldwide politics in a moment that everyone wants definitions.
En la esfera internacional, tres importantes elecciones – Unión Europea, Líbano e Irán – reflejaron una diversidad de políticas a través del mundo en un momento que todos quieren definiciones.
Also, the North Korean jail sentence against two U.S. journalists created more concerns about the paranoia that rules the destiny of the Korean Peninsula and South Asian region.
Además, la sentencia de cárcel de Corea del Norte contra dos periodistas de los Estados Unidos creó más preocupaciones acerca de la paranoia que gobierna el destino de la península coreana y de la región sudasiática.
In the domestic arena, the debate about the future of the healthcare regime inflamed hard arguments about what is the right or wrong way to solve the problems for all the citizens and inhabitants that cannot pay private medical insurance. Meanwhile the new anti-smoking bill didn’t end the bitter fight between two groups of people: the smokers and the non-smokers.

- The week began with bad news from North Korea. The journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were sentenced to spend 12 years in labor camps after convicting them of illegal entry into the communist country.

- On Tuesday, June 9, a bomb-laden vehicle exploded at the Pearl Continental Hotel, in the city of Peshawar, in the northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 11 people and wounded 55. The hotel, habitual residence of foreign dignitaries and international travelers, was demolished in the blast.

- On Wednesday, June 10, The New York Times published a very critical article about the education reform and the corruption of a lot of schools across the country. The editorial titled: “Truth in Teaching” says: “Education reform will go nowhere until the states are forced to revamp corrupt teacher evaluation systems that rate a vast majority of teachers as “excellent”, even in schools where children learn nothing.”

- El miércoles 10 de junio, The New York Times publicó un artículo muy crítico sobre la reforma educativa y la corrupción en muchas escuelas a través del país. La editorial titulada: “La verdad en la enseñanza” dice:
“La reforma de la educación no irá a ninguna pare hasta que los estados sean forzados a reorganizar los sistemas corruptos de evaluación de maestros que califican a una gran mayoría de maestros como “excelentes”, aún en escuelas donde los chicos no aprenden nada.”

- On Friday, June 12, Iran voted for a new president of the country. The two main candidates were the current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi. Both rivals claimed victory before the close of polls. Iran’s interior ministry said Saturday President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was far ahead with nearly 80 percent of all votes counted. In Tehran, his rival refused defeat and questioned the results.

- El viernes 12 de junio, Irán votó por un nuevo presidente del país. Los dos principales candidatos fueron el actual Presidente Mahmoud Ahmadinejad y el anterior Primer Ministro Mir Hossein Mousavi. Ambos rivales declararon victoria antes del cierre de las urnas de votación. El sábado, el Ministerio del Interior de Irán dijo que el Presidente Mahmoud Ahmadinejad estaba lejos a la cabeza de los resultados con cerca de un 80 por ciento de todos los votos contados. - The financial week ended with poor results on the New York markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average gained only 36.13 points or 0.41% on the week closing at 8,799.26. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite grew 9.38 points, or 0.51%, closing the week at 1,858.80. Also during the week, S&P 500 went up 0.65% and NYSE Composite climbed 1.08%.

- La semana financiera finalizó con pobre resultados en los mercados de Nueva York. El índice Dow Jones Industrials Average ganó sólo 36,13 puntos, o sea 0,41% en la semana, cerrando a 8.799,26. Bob sent a message informing he returned home healthy after three weeks of driving from Florida to Oregon.
