Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to a new edition of Sunday Bilingual News! From the last week, we have plenty of raw materials to create a masterpiece like the “Inferno” of Dante. The last few days were was very rich in emblematic issues that exceeded the normal news of prior seven-day periods.

¡Hola!

From the dusty lands of the Southern Afghanistan to Blair House in Washington, the week showed a puzzle of events and facts that came with roots in others events and subjects from the last months and the last years:
1) Afghan war
2) Health care bill
3) Financial world crisis
4) Recall of defective vehicles

1) Guerra Afgana
2) Proyecto de la ley de salud
3) Crisis financiera mundial
4) Llamado para reparaciones de vehículos defectuosos

News events of these four subjects and others like the rumors that Intel was another victim of the last December Chinese cyber attacks, all together really gives us more than enough material to write a story that we could title: “Perfect Trip to the Inferno”.

Please, what is your opinion? Is it rich material to a bilingual practice in both Spanish and English?

Perfect Trip to the Inferno
Perfecto viaje al Infierno

In the fourteenth century, the famous Italian writer Dante Alighieri wrote an epic poem titled Divine Comedy that includes a very original description of hell called by him: Inferno.

Across his writing, Dante explains different sins linked with the beliefs of the people of the Renaissance. All his explanations look like a journey of the soul of human beings toward God.

At that time, Dante explains the concepts of virtue and vice, and pays a lot of attention to the sins of violence and fraud. He also says that hell punishes sins that involve conscious fraud or treachery.

Thousands of years after the first Inferno, its framework gives us pictures that look like a mirror of where we are living now with violence like what is happening around the Moshtarak operation.

By the way, last week began in the trenches of Marjah where NATO soldiers were observing the bullet’s parabolic paths from the enemy to find were the Taliban’s snipers were hidden.

After this first step in our trip, we read the headlines of the European press. During the week, TV showed scenes of the Greek people fighting in Athens’ streets against the police because they don’t want its neglected government to accept the conditions of Germany's Angela Merket’s ultimatum to put the house of one of the brothers of EU in order.

Next, Toyota’s case opened a lot of questions about the ethic principles of the big corporations. As all we know, Mr. Akio Toyoda, grandson of the founder of the Toyota’s empire, cried in front of his own American’s employees after his emotional apology testifying in the US Congress to justify that it was not intentional that his company sold defective products that ended with taking American’s lives a long distance away from the place where the Japanese engineers crafted their famous Corollas or Prius.

The analysts till now ask what was really behind the tears of the CEO of the biggest Japanese corporation. And some of them question about the implications of “fraud” of a big company. Could corporation’s fraud, its negligence and its greed pay only with “tears”?

In more news, on Thursday, February 25, President Obama invited the Republican and Democrat leaders of Congress to the Summit at Blair House to find an agreement between the parties about health care reform. Unfortunately, despite the positive initiative of President Obama and the practical draft of Senator Lamar Alexander’s proposition, all again came to a total void of solutions.

About the new frustration of the health care problem, the Friday’s editorial of New York Times said: “The main lesson to draw from Thursday’s health care forum is that differences between Democrats and Republicans are too profound to be bridged.”

We can agree the differences of politicians frequently put barriers to the solution of common issues of the country. We understand also, that everybody has the right to make mistakes. But when we put together all these issues as a trip with different steps, behind the scene, we see similar pictures of the Inferno of Dante with cases of fraud, violence, treachery, and with communication problems between brothers and friends. A lot of thinkers agree in these chaotic moments, that lack of communication helps the sins grow everywhere. But we have to try to avoid the entrance to the last circle, the vestibule of the Inferno, where the hot flames of hell will destroy us.

Carl

I agree with Carl, this is the Inferno. Suzanne

For me, the hell is something symbolic that represents the evil and the bad actions of the people. Erika

After the Inferno, could we return to the Paradise? Jenny

You talked about four negative issues last Sunday Bilingual News, but you didn't make a step to look all the corruption we have around us. This is the worst issue today. We cannot return to the Paradise if we continue walking for this bad route. Stephen

I see the fire with different eyes. For me, it is a warm home in the winter when it is snowing... Paul

Today the people don't pay attention how the hell is... I never thought about it.

Where can complete, unadulterated happiness and never-ending peace be found? Wherever it is, that’s heaven. Some people experience a miniscule taste of heaven here on earth.

There is the other place, where there is no peace nor happiness, just total misery and torment. That’s hell. For some people, hell starts here on earth.

I believe our spirits have a beginning but no end, so we will live forever in one of the two places.

I agree the evil exists but I don't know what could be its best representation: fire, ice, destruction...? Joseph

Joseph, If I wanted to represent hell or evil by something, I'd use fire. Fire, like evil, always consume and cause destruction. Ice on the other hand does not consume and rarely destroys, but preserves.
