Last week was the second time in the winter season that a big snowstorm hit Washington DC and all the East Cost from Virginia to Connecticut. The blizzard left thousands of houses without power and a lot of Government offices were closed for more than three days. The nature phenomenon again generated some polemic questions: Was this storm an effect of global warming in a reverse sense? What will happen in similar circumstances if the terrorists make an attack when the government buildings and the capital of the country are immobile because the absence of public transportation, utilities, and without sufficient resources to clean the main routes and maintain the critical services of Washington DC?

When part of the activities returned to Washington, on Friday, the snow covered with a white blanket a broad area of the south from South Carolina to Texas, also getting to north Florida.

On Thursday, February 11th, Iran celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. In front of a crowd of supporters of the current regime, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared his nation had the capacity to produce higher-enriched uranium. International observers think this declaration was only a show to send aggressive messages to the Western countries because they are against any nuclear proliferation.

American Icon is in a Risky Game
Icono Americano en un Riesgoso Juego

On Thursday February 11, Motorola announced it is targeting the first quarter of 2011 for an important split of the company in two parts. It is not the first cut of the organization of this technology enterprise during the last decade.

Between 2003 and 2004, its semiconductor business unit was separated from the Motorola organization forming a new independent company named Freescale Semiconductor. Months ago, another second unit was split off the rest.

Now, its mobile devices and home and network mobility will form a new independent public company. The rest, Enterprise Mobility Solutions will remain managing the communications for the government, public sector and enterprises mobility business. But the two companies will continue using the Motorola brand.

Since 1930 when its founders created the company as a manufacturer of radios for cars, Motorola was one of the most important American Icons. It provided thousands of radios to the police of Chicago and others government units and it grew as a semiconductor manufacturer too, producing for more than a decade the microprocessors used for the Apple computers.

Motorola played a key role in NASA space-programs. Its communication equipment was used for most of its space-flights for decades including the Moon landing. Astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke the famous words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” from the Moon on a Motorola radio.

In 1991, Motorola made another key milestone when it demonstrated the world’s working-prototype of the digital cellular systems and phones using GSM standard. By the way, since the 1960s in parallel with Bell Laboratories, Motorola was experimenting with systems that today the world knows as cellular telephones.

After a history rich of telecommunication and semiconductor achievements, during the last decades, Motorola was losing ground with other competitors and shrinking its business with diverse steps that never healed its economic and business problems. In 1998, it was overtaken by Nokia as the world's biggest provider of mobile phones.

In summary, every time a part of the company showed signs of sickness, Motorola used the same remedy, to cut that unit from the organization. But now, the current split is in the final limit of the limits because both new companies will share the same brand. Meanwhile, the first group that includes the mobile phones business will have to fight against stronger competitors in a very unstable environment. This situation puts a big question about the future uncertainty of all that remain standing from the original organization.

What will be the future of these two novel companies? Could they continue lifting the Motorola flags without the domain of external powers? Or will they be devoured by giants of today 's industry? A lot of other questions arise for this risky game to cut and cut and cut…What do you think? What is your perception after all these splits? Is it important that the Motorola icon continues alive as part the inheritance for the nation?

Domingo: You always shake our feelings. Usted siempre sacude nuestros sentimientos. Tears run from my eyes...Lagrimas corren desde mis ojos. Memories of my first love. Recuerdos de mi primer amor. Carol

TEST: The bench remembers me when I met the man who is my husband today. We didn't have money to go to an expensive restaurant. We decided to talk in a bench of near park. It was nice...no formal... Erika

I think Motorola is walking across a risky way, but I don't have experience in this kind of business. Anne

The bench of the park is very romantic. It is not for me. George

TEST: A bench in a park for me has different meanings. First, it remembers me when I was a child. My father liked to read the newspaper while I was playing with my friends different games. After that, frequently, it was the meeting place with my girlfriend. Next, I came back to the park with my own children and also reading the newspaper while they played in the games. Fred

My case is different. I remember when my grandfather and I, we were together to the park. He liked to read me tales and we enjoyed a lot those moments. Frank

My parents never had time for me. They were working every time. I went to the park with my friends. And sometimes I felt bad when other children came with their parents. Lora

In my case, my grandmother baked sweet cookies. After that we ate together in a bench of the park. Patty

The park was the only place to meet my girlfriend when I was a teenager. I didn't have money to go to coffee bars. But frequently some friends came too. They interrupted us... I didn't like visitors when I wanted to stay alone with my girl. Joseph

The bench of the park remembers me the first poems my girlfriend -today my wife - wrote about her love for me. Very emotional! Marc

My case was a little different. I met my boyfriend in the beach. We changed the "bench" for the sand of the beach. Stephanie

In my life, the romantic pictures are long distance from now. I cannot link the bench with my current feelings. Sorry. John

Each life is a very different history. Perhaps, for some of us, a picture looks romantic and for another remembers bad experience. Jenny

Changing the subject, I think Motorola is working well to recover ground. Of course, the competition is harder than before. Jim

Park Benches: During my teenage years, in my country, I could not have rendevouz with boyfriends on park benches.

I attended a strict catholic school until age 19, so the nuns probably would have expelled me from school.

Also, many of the park benches were usually used by homeless people, and idlers. All rendevouz were private and secret.

Motorola: At least it will not be ‘too big to fail’ and want taxpayers bailout.
