Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Sunday morning at 6.30 am was cold in Florida, but without big problems for the runners and for those who walk fast...It is nice to walk when the 99% of the drivers of luxury cars and smart-phones in their ears are still sleeping. From the moment we came back to Florida we are seeing a lot of the luxury-car drivers don’t respect the walk-signals at the intersections of important streets.

¡Hola!

During the week, we think the most important subject of the media was the Toyota recall that includes more than 8 million vehicles across the world. Also on Thursday, another bad news hit the Japanese car maker, as brake problems surfaced in the popular hybrid of the company, the Prius 2010 model that has been on the street since in the middle of 2009.

Additionally, David Stockman, former budget chief of the Reagan administration talked to different media about his opinion related to the AIG case and the Wall Street strong lobbying efforts to show the economy and the finances from the viewpoint of big corporations. Also, in different interviews, Mr. Stockman affirmed Wall Street exerts a negative influence in the decisions of the Federal Reserve and the US Department of Treasury. He is against the doctrine: “too big to fail”.

The debate about the name of the new digit tablet from Apple continues in the media and in between the members our Club. Some people think Apple was short in imagination when it baptized its new digital creature as “iPad”. Maybe, some non-fanatics of the smart gadgets could mix names and concepts between “ïPod” and “ïPad”.

Automobile Industry: Who is in trouble?
Industria automotriz: ¿Quién está en problemas?

The latest bad news those are hitting Toyota, its partners, and customers open a new key question mark about the future of the automobile industry.

First, is it really only a problem of the world’s largest automotive company, or are there something more behind the scene?

If it is only an engineering fault from Toyota, maybe its future as a leading company could be shaken seriously. During the last few weeks, its stock went down 20 percent on Wall Street. And according to its estimates, the recalls and lost sales will cost it $2 billion by the end of March.

In the brake problem of its hybrid Prius, the engineers say this fault involves technological components of the new car. Scared by this conclusion, some observers blame the software and the chips of the hybrid cars for the troubles of some new vehicles.

By the way, the auto-makers are integrating more software and using miniature computer chips in new models of vehicles. Analysts affirm between 40 and 60 percent of the value of the cars by the middle of this decade will be in software and technology.

Till now, from politicians to engineers and manufacturers, all agree technology will revolutionize the automobile industry, improving the performance of the vehicles, reducing the gasoline consumption, and making more safe cars. Are they right?

Despite every time anybody introduces new automatic functions in the cars, all the public applaud, only a few number of drivers have rethought more than twice the drama of driving across mountains or isolated regions of the country thinking when he/she sees on the dashboard that the speed of the car is 60 miles per hour but in the reality his/her vehicle is running like a super-jet looking from the heights for the runway of an international airport.

What do you think? Did you have this experience at least one time? We felt very astonished in the Rocky Mountains region when in one situation we made a distance of 60 miles with curves and in up and down traveling, in less than 30 minutes. Worse, when we stopped the car we didn’t find a mechanic to test our speedometer, we were unable to replace it for a new one.

In summary, technology could help the automobile industry to produce better cars but also it could make powerful guns to generate more suicides. Did you think about this dilemma?

Your question about the possible future of the automobile industry is very critical. Carol

Till now I don't understand why Toyota didn't see this problem before. I think they have tools to evaluate problems before the cars go to the street. Anne

For me, all the industry is in trouble. Erika

I don't like very high automatic cars. No me gustan los automoviles totalmente automatizados. Marcelo

The decline of the unemployment rate to 9.7% in January from 10% in December is not an important new. It is not a significant decline. We continue in the same... Suzanne

As a nation, NASA was symbol of progress. Now, it is another sample of frustration. Judy

Electronic problems are not new in the cars, and they produce big headaches when a chip with software fails driving across remote regions. Stephen

I agree the problems of chips with software in the cars are not new, but now the dimension of the problem is huge. It is not only a car... Marc

The car sickness has other victims... Today, Honda announced a recall too. Paul

Perhaps we have to return to the transportation of 30 or 40 years ago... cars with the old mechanics. George

Pierre said...

Everybody talks about the recalls in the automobile industry. Do you remember the recalls of laptops for battery problems? Pierre

Frank said...

Yes, I remember the recall for the Sony's batteries. All the big PC makers were involved. Frank

As Floridian, the worst news of the week was the decision of the President Obama administration to cut the astronaut program to return to the Moon in 2020. Mary

The cut of the NASA's budgets are not new. It is bad, but we are not more the heroes of the SPACE. John

John, The times changed. The NASA's budget is only one of our problems. Peter

The case you comment about the speed problem in the Rocky Mountains is terrible. I never had this kind of experience. Donna

Jim said...

I agree the electronic part of the cars is a critical component of the new generation of vehicles. When a gadget that measures or controls the speed of the car doesn't work properly the driver is in a big trouble. I had this experience too. It was driving across the mountains of Nevada. Jim

Lora said...

I never drove across remote areas because I have fear for possible problems of cars in places where I cannot ask for help. Lora

Patty said...

When you drive in the desert or the mountain where you find nothing, you have to drive in convoy with other cars. Patty

Rich said...

I like to drive everywhere but I know about mechanics and I prepare my car before long trips carrying also supplies I will not find in a mechanic shop of a small town. Rich

I am not a good driver, I prefer to take a flight. Susy

I am a lucky person because I have my own private driver who knows about mechanics and all these matters. Jenny

Another subject: If David Stockman didn't like the AIG's rescue, it is because something very dark was behind this rescue. Mr. Stockman knows about this kind of operations more than us... Fred

I would like to come back to the Toshiba's software problems. My opinion will be not popular, but the cars with complex technological components are not to drive across remote areas.

With Regards to Reducing the NASA Budget:

It is unfortunate that we have to cut NASA's budget, but we are in a bad economic situation. Going to the Moon is very expensive.

Many people have no food to eat, and have no jobs.

After feeding our people and providing jobs, then we can go to the moon. Going to the Moon is a luxury we cannot afford if people are starving. It would be like giving a dessert but no dinner to a hungry man who wants food.

Similarly, some countries are filled with starving people, but they spend all their money to buy arms to fight in wars.
