Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! We are entering into a new decade. Did you realize this? Do you really know what are the signals for the new decade?

¡Hola!

Till now, maybe we cannot see big differences for all the problems we are living with in the political arena and the social issues. This is true. Last week, again terrorism and the unemployment index continued shaking the skeletons of our institutions. By the way, last Friday, Mark Shields, political analyst of the NewsHour TV program said: "In the decade between 2000 and 2010, this country created zero jobs, when 28 more million people came into the population, zero jobs. That's a political dynamite."

But did you read the other news of the last few days? Okay, for this Sunday Bilingual News, we have something different that we want to share with you.

FROM BURJ DUBAI TO LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

DE BURJ DUBAI HASTA LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

On January 4, the Burj Khalifa Bin Zayed opened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as the world's tallest skyscraper with a structure of 824.55 meters (2708.14 feet).

Three days later, in Las Vegas, Nevada, CES 2010 opened its doors as the most important international consumer electronics exhibition of the year with the presentation of more than 20,000 new products.

From the opening ceremony of the Burj Dubai to the keynote sessions of the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show, the technological distance was shorter than ever before. The ambitions of human beings to climb to the sky or to talk to everyone everywhere, thanks to the intelligence of tiny silicon chips show a level of technology evolution that we couldn't measure ten years ago in the real sense.

The first skyscrapers of the previous millennium were result of the introduction of steel and reinforced concrete in the construction industry, and the production of pump and water storage tanks, and elevators. Today, the new generation of skyscrapers requires also a lot of technology, computers and advanced software.

In the other extreme, the first small digital devices were assembled with some chips to send and receive voice messages, using antennas, and batteries. Today, the next generation of intelligent digital devices is growing thanks the support of the nanotechnology and advanced software.

In both cases, the physical materials and the classic hardware are not enough anymore. The tallest buildings and smallest devices make the difference from previous generations of buildings and devices thanks to the magic actions of faster silicon chips running super-complex programs, and jewels of advanced software.

Irony, today we are seeing again the role of technology behind the scene. In the previous issue, we saw the body screening machines as an electronic barrier to detect the entrance of terrorists with bombs, and the intelligent databases matching profiles of criminals and potential risks. Now, we see the technology helping to climb the pinnacle of skyscrapers or communicating with people through voice, text, picture and video all together.

This week, in Las Vegas, Nevada, CES 2010 was an amazing parade of powerful gaming systems, next generation of super smart phones, the evolution of the tablet concept in hybrid machines, and new lines of design of inspired mobile computers.

And the opening ceremony of the Burj Dubai tower was a fantastic exhibition of lighting, more than 10,000 fireworks, and the final point of a building project valued in US$ 800,000,000.

Of course, Las Vegas' parade and the Burj Dubai lighting cannot delete bad news such as the 85,000 jobs lost in December, or the FBI arrest of two men suspected of planning terror attacks in New York, but sometimes it is good for a while to play with one of the new super smart phones or watch the colorful lighting around the skyscrapers of Dubai, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Jin Mao, or Chicago.

In summary, the new decade is coming with a lot of news in the technology arena and many huge engineering projects. In the same Dubai, it is awaiting the end of the construction of another tower of 800 meters (2624.67 feet) named as Al Burj in 2012. During the current year, Russia will have its tallest skyscraper, the Moscow Tower of 600 meters (1968.50 feet). And the Freedom Tower of New York is expected for next year with 541 meters (1774.93 feet).

All the best,

Domingo

I never rode a camel. I don't have experience to compare, but I have fears to take the elevators in tall buildings. Susy

I have a hard time seeing all this skyscraper building activity as an expensive exercise in "mine is bigger than yours." Carl

I agree with Carl. 'Arms' race is not in fashion now. 'Skyscrapers' race is now in fashion.

Concerning the camel - it seems he was in Miami a few days ago, and had some snowflakes falling on his face. He is pensive and cannot believe or understand what is happening to him. In Miami? No......it's not possible!
