Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to a new Sunday Bilingual News! I hope you enjoyed nice Christmas celebrations with your family in the middle of a peaceful environment and the smiles of children and Santas.
¡Hola!

We are ending a hard year also with surprises during the Holidays. The incident aboard a Northwest Airlines-Delta flight in Detroit on December 25th returned the panic about acts of terrorism. The devils never take vacations.

Did you read the news during the last few days? What was the most important subject of the week? Probably, the most important subject for you was the family together next to the Christmas’ tree.
Old Year: Last News
Año Viejo: Las últimas noticias
- On Thursday morning, the US Senate voted 60-39 to approve to an overhaul to the nation’s health care system. The process showed fierce opposition from Republicans and some division among Democrats. Howard Dean who ran for president in 2004 denounced this bill as a sellout, while President Obama heralded it as a historic breakthrough. The next step will be to reconcile Senate and House versions of the bill.

- A day before, in an exclusive interview with Jim Lehrer from the PBS News Hour TV program, President Obama summarized his eleven months in the White House with these words: “ I think that we have managed an economic crisis of monumental proportions, two wars, a whole host of other challenges, very well. I am entirely dissatisfied with where we are right now in terms of jobs, and the fact that families out there on the eve of Christmas are still really worried about being able to pay the bills or send their kids to college or have health care for themselves.”

- A winter storm spread across the Midwest during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Also the snow gave Dallas a rare white Christmas bringing a blanket of snow to Texas.

- During the last few days, in addition, Iran was an important headline. On Saturday, thousands of protesters clashed violently with security-service officials across Tehran. The international analysts think this is the beginning of a cruel civil war. Some observers expect the oil price will be impacted in 2010 for this crisis and nobody knows what will be the end of the new chaos that began a week ago with the death of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, a prominent dissident cleric.

From our point of view, Christmas was not a stop for the bad news. China, Iran and the string of attacks against Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad showed a gloomy picture in opposition of that the Holidays Season means. It is very sad, but it is the reality.

All the best,

Domingo

Carl

For me, the best news was the US Senate passed the health care bill. The worst news was the "bomb-man" in the Delta flight. Again, we will have problems and fears when we travel by airplane. Erika
