Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! This Sunday February 21 is a difficult day to make a good analysis of the last week because the economic, social and political environments are not improving.

¡Hola!

A national human resources agency with expertise in job searching said there are more than 15 million people fighting for no more than 2 million positions.

Different political analysts recognize the crisis inside the US Congress is making the situation worse. Time Magazine wrote “Washington is frozen”. And the Editor of this publication, Richard Stengel, added: “Republicans, Democrats and independents can agree on one thing: the government is broken”.

The gap between the political speech and reality is growing dangerously. Indiana Senator Evan Bayh who will not seek re-election in the US Senate next November stated details of the intimacy in the aisles of Congress that show there is not an open dialogue between Republicans and Democrats in the most important legislative group in the country.

Meanwhile, according to Google’s research, students of Chinese schools are making cyber attacks against important American companies. Last Thursday, New York Times wrote: “A series of online attacks on Google and dozens of other American corporations have been traced to computers at two educational institutions in China, including one with close ties to the Chinese military…”

We have to remember a Russian professor of international politics in the beginning of 2009 said the United States will break in pieces between 2010 and 2011 if its leaders and people continue on their current path.

Also we have to add it is not only the gap between Republicans and Democrats, the current crisis it is more deep and complex. Our institutions – in the majority of the Western countries – have lost the respect for others and they believe the collapse is far away, but if we return our eyes to the unemployment drama, a big number of job advertisements are false. The employers lie when they offer jobs that are not real, and the discrimination continues in different ways. Additionally, the big companies push our people to the street while they buy from China – the country of the Internet hackers – till the last screw. In the meantime, the Chinese regime continues playing with the low value of its currency - the yuan - to earn more businesses and learn more knowledge from the Western civilization.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK
BUENAS NOTICIAS DE LA SEMANA

In this opportunity we appointed two positive issues to remark in this Sunday Bilingual News:
1) In the Winter Olympics of Vancouver, the American athletes are making it a very good job and winning important medals. The Games are going into the second week of competition.
2) According to press sources, the NATO offensive in Southern Afghanistan continue showing the professional work of elite troops to take the area from the insurgents, but its very difficult operation because the rebels are camouflaged within the civilian population and it is not easy to know who is a bad guy or a local inhabitant.

From your perspective, what were the most important subjects of the last few days? Did you read the newspapers and/or watch TV news programs? Could suggest other topics?

Till now, Valid Rules of Civility
Hasta ahora, reglas válidas de cortesía

In a critical moment when the members of the US Congress have difficulties working together, as a body and the differences among politicians are growing, perhaps it could help to re-read the Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior In Company and Conversation written by George Washington, one of the Founders of the Nation. They were published by Beaver Press, 1971.

The complete list includes 110 rules, some of them now are archaic but the whole spirit remains as the code of conduct for politicians and members of the government, and for everybody who cannot maintain a good dialogue with people who confront each other with different ideas, political goals, and cultural roots.

By age sixteen, George Washington had copies made by hand the 110 rules about the behavior when we meet other people, in particular when we don’t like the others for different reasons. Originally, these rules were composed by French Jesuits in 1595. Till now, these rules remain as a very interesting contribution from one of the Fathers of the Nation.

The first rule wrote for George Washington says: “Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect, to those who are present”. After that he adds: “Show nothing to your friend that may affright him”.

About a possible enemy or people distant from us, Washington says: “Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another though he was your enemy”.

He doesn’t blame the persons who made their best but without success: “When a man does all he can though it succeeds not well blame not him that did it”. And he asks respect including for who are punished for a crime: “When you see a crime punished, you may be inwardly pleased, but always show pity to the suffering offender.”

In summary, the concept of civility of George Washington continues to be valid and could help to make more harmonic the work between friends or enemies avoiding personal attacks, rudeness, and aggressive behaviors.

Last week was the second time in the winter season that a big snowstorm hit Washington DC and all the East Cost from Virginia to Connecticut. The blizzard left thousands of houses without power and a lot of Government offices were closed for more than three days. The nature phenomenon again generated some polemic questions: Was this storm an effect of global warming in a reverse sense? What will happen in similar circumstances if the terrorists make an attack when the government buildings and the capital of the country are immobile because the absence of public transportation, utilities, and without sufficient resources to clean the main routes and maintain the critical services of Washington DC?

On Thursday, February 11th, Iran celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. American Icon is in a Risky Game

On Thursday February 11, Motorola announced it is targeting the first quarter of 2011 for an important split of the company in two parts. It is not the first cut of the organization of this technology enterprise during the last decade.

Between 2003 and 2004, its semiconductor business unit was separated from the Motorola organization forming a new independent company named Freescale Semiconductor. Months ago, another second unit was split off the rest.

Now, its mobile devices and home and network mobility will form a new independent public company. The rest, Enterprise Mobility Solutions will remain managing the communications for the government, public sector and enterprises mobility business. But the two companies will continue using the Motorola brand.

Since 1930 when its founders created the company as a manufacturer of radios for cars, Motorola was one of the most important American Icons. It provided thousands of radios to the police of Chicago and others government units and it grew as a semiconductor manufacturer too, producing for more than a decade the microprocessors used for the Apple computers.

Motorola played a key role in NASA space-programs. Its communication equipment was used for most of its space-flights for decades including the Moon landing. Astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke the famous words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” from the Moon on a Motorola radio.

In 1991, Motorola made another key milestone when it demonstrated the world’s working-prototype of the digital cellular systems and phones using GSM standard. By the way, since the 1960s in parallel with Bell Laboratories, Motorola was experimenting with systems that today the world knows as cellular telephones.

After a history rich of telecommunication and semiconductor achievements, during the last decades, Motorola was losing ground with other competitors and shrinking its business with diverse steps that never healed its economic and business problems. In 1998, it was overtaken by Nokia as the world's biggest provider of mobile phones.

In summary, every time a part of the company showed signs of sickness, Motorola used the same remedy, to cut that unit from the organization. But now, the current split is in the final limit of the limits because both new companies will share the same brand. Meanwhile, the first group that includes the mobile phones business will have to fight against stronger competitors in a very unstable environment. This situation puts a big question about the future uncertainty of all that remain standing from the original organization.

What will be the future of these two novel companies? Could they continue lifting the Motorola flags without the domain of external powers? Or will they be devoured by giants of today 's industry? A lot of other questions arise for this risky game to cut and cut and cut…What do you think? What is your perception after all these splits? Is it important that the Motorola icon continues alive as part the inheritance for the nation?

Hello! Welcome to a new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! During the week, we think the most important subject of the media was the Toyota recall that includes more than 8 million vehicles across the world. Also on Thursday, another bad news hit the Japanese car maker, as brake problems surfaced in the popular hybrid of the company, the Prius 2010 model that has been on the street since in the middle of 2009.

Additionally, David Stockman, former budget chief of the Reagan administration talked to different media about his opinion related to the AIG case and the Wall Street strong lobbying efforts to show the economy and the finances from the viewpoint of big corporations. Also, in different interviews, Mr. Stockman affirmed Wall Street exerts a negative influence in the decisions of the Federal Reserve and the US Department of Treasury. The debate about the name of the new digit tablet from Apple continues in the media and in between the members our Club. Industria automotriz: ¿Quién está en problemas?

The latest bad news those are hitting Toyota, its partners, and customers open a new key question mark about the future of the automobile industry.

First, is it really only a problem of the world’s largest automotive company, or are there something more behind the scene?

If it is only an engineering fault from Toyota, maybe its future as a leading company could be shaken seriously. During the last few weeks, its stock went down 20 percent on Wall Street. And according to its estimates, the recalls and lost sales will cost it $2 billion by the end of March.

In the brake problem of its hybrid Prius, the engineers say this fault involves technological components of the new car. Scared by this conclusion, some observers blame the software and the chips of the hybrid cars for the troubles of some new vehicles.

By the way, the auto-makers are integrating more software and using miniature computer chips in new models of vehicles. Analysts affirm between 40 and 60 percent of the value of the cars by the middle of this decade will be in software and technology.

Till now, from politicians to engineers and manufacturers, all agree technology will revolutionize the automobile industry, improving the performance of the vehicles, reducing the gasoline consumption, and making more safe cars. Are they right?

Despite every time anybody introduces new automatic functions in the cars, all the public applaud, only a few number of drivers have rethought more than twice the drama of driving across mountains or isolated regions of the country thinking when he/she sees on the dashboard that the speed of the car is 60 miles per hour but in the reality his/her vehicle is running like a super-jet looking from the heights for the runway of an international airport.

What do you think? Did you have this experience at least one time? We felt very astonished in the Rocky Mountains region when in one situation we made a distance of 60 miles with curves and in up and down traveling, in less than 30 minutes. Worse, when we stopped the car we didn’t find a mechanic to test our speedometer, we were unable to replace it for a new one.

In summary, technology could help the automobile industry to produce better cars but also it could make powerful guns to generate more suicides. Did you think about this dilemma?

Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to a new issue of the Sunday Bilingual News! The weather doesn't look great in Florida, but we have to feel glad because we don't have snow. The countries of North Europe and the northern states of the United States suffer very heavy snow storms that block routes and create problems for the drivers of cars, trucks and also trains.

¡Hola! Here in the United States, the last week was very strong in political and economic issues, but very weak for the stocks of Wall Street. January was the worst month since February 2009 for the major indexes of the New York markets.

On Wednesday January 27, Apple introduced iPad. It is not a a new feminine product. It is a new digital tablet that looks as an overgrown iPod Touch with features from the iPhones and functions of the electronic books such as Kindle and others.

In addition, the global economic elite and world celebrities are attending to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. By the way, somebody in the Swiss Alps said, if we want to solve the economic problems, we have to kill all the bankers.

Electric cars without sacrifices

Automóviles eléctricos sin sacrificios

Tesla Motors announced that it has filled a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its common stock on Wall Street. This is a young American company that designs, manufactures, and sells high-performance fully electric vehicles with advanced levels of technology. Its first production car - Tesla Roadster - goes more than 200 miles (380 km) on a single charge. Daimler from Germany, father of the famous Mercedes Benz, invested $50 million last May 2009 and it is a strategic partner of Tesla Motors.

The people from Tesla Motors has the belief that an electric car need not be a driving sacrifice. They say: "We have brought the best of the automotive and technology worlds together to permanently bury the image of an electric car as a step backwards in performance, efficiency, or design". And they think the best definition of automobile is freedom of motion.

Sunday Bilingual News

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club with the analysis of the main subjects of the last few days in both languages: Spanish and English!

¡Hola!

Did you read the newspapers and/or watch TV during the last week? What are, from your perspective, the most important issues of the last seven days?

We think this week was very complex and we cannot talk about all the news in details such as in other issues. Definitely, the Massachusetts election produced a big "earthquake" in the country. Of course, it was a different shaking that Haiti had two weeks ago. The people from Massachusetts talked for all the country and they said: "-We want real and effective changes in the domestic politics. We are angry for delays. We want a government who understands our needs and urgencies."

During all the week, major corporations and banks linked with Wall Street published their reports of revenues and incomes from the quarter ended during the last days of December. IBM, Citibank, EBay, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Google, American Express, General Electric, McDonald and a lot of more discussed with the financial analysts of New York their results.

Wednesday was a terrible day for the White House. It was the first anniversary of President Obama assumed the administration of the country. It was not a day of celebrations. It was a day of hard critics because after 12 months of government, the unemployment continues in two digits and there are not clear signals of positive changes.

The job problem and other economic factors produced a new shaking on Friday. Two new Democrat Senators said they will not vote for the confirmation of Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke's second term. People are angry because they don't find more coins in their pockets while the corporations are recovering from the collapse of 2008. And the President of the FED is a good target despite all his efforts to maintain the big icons of the country standing.

Meanwhile, Haiti continued at the top of the headlines worldwide. The government of that country said more than 150,000 corpses have been buried, but nobody knows really how many people died in the earthquake of January 12. Also, two days ago, the rescue teams found more people alive under the rubble.

In the middle of the painful news about unemployment, Haitian earthquake and people asking for real effective solutions, another topic produced another crucial question mark.

China versus Ms Clinton

China contra la Señora Clinton

The US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, spoke about Internet Freedom at the Newseum, in Washington, DC. Her speech was brilliant but bold. She accused directly the Internet censorship of China, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Vietnam. Also she made negative references about the North Korea's attitude against the freedom of its citizens.

Additionally, during the speech, the Secretary of State referenced the case of Google's hacker attack last December and questioned the Chinese Government about a serious investigation to put an end to the different attacks that were suffered by US corporations during the last months.

China immediately answered the Secretary of State with a hard message: "We urge the U.S. side to respect facts and stop using the so-called freedom of the Internet to make unjustified accusations against China".

What is your opinion about the new international conflict between the United States and China? Who is right and who is wrong? What will be the next problem? Could we measure this unusual conflict?

From our perspective, despite the brave attitude of Ms Clinton, the answer from China puts a critical question mark about the future relationships between both countries.

The Berlin Wall that symbolized a world divided into two antagonistic powers didn't end the division of the world. All who worked to recreate our planet as the reign of freedom never finish their job.

The "Communist Chinese Wall" is not a brick wall. It is a wall of indestructible stone that we will never hand over for the pushing of free ideas. Chinese government and institutions say: "Yes, we want to made deals with the western companies... Yes, we enjoy working with your technology... Yes, we will make computers, chips and smartest machines for everybody... But nobody will change our rules... Everybody who wants to do business with China has to accept the footstep of our boots. You have to realize that under our red flag, all is primarily Chinese assets. "

The week began with a good subject. In Detroit, Michigan, the North American International Auto Show 2010 opened its door in the Cobo Center with the enthusiasm of car makers who are pushing a lot of initiatives to rebuild their business. Ford said it is investing hundreds of millions of dollars on its electric vehicle plan and creating 1,000 new jobs. Other manufacturers are working in the development of hybrid cars. Everybody thinks green technologies are the future for the automobile.

But on Tuesday January 12, the Haiti's earthquake shocked all the people who know about the series of dramas this country lived through its history, in particular since the dictatorship period of the Duvalier era.

Also the week, President Obama announced his plan to tax big banks of the country. The news produced negative reactions in the financial sector.

The US companies that closed their last financial quarter on December 2009 began this week to inform Wall Street analysts and investors their revenues and net incomes. On Thursday January 14, Intel Corporation, semiconductor leader of PC microprocessors, posted a net income up 875% compared year over year and also its revenues grew compared with the same period of 2008. Elsewhere, Gartner Group published its study of PCs shipped worldwide and domestically during October-December 2009 with a growth of 22.10% of unit shipments across the world compared with the fourth quarter of 2008. Both reports showed the technology industry began its recovery after a big decline during the second half of 2008 and the beginning of 2009.

In Massachusetts, a special election to fill the Senator Edward Kennedy's seat created a lot of political comments and expectations. On Tuesday, this state will vote for their new Senator since Kennedy died on August 25, 2009.

From your point of view, what was the main subject of the last few days? We think the new Haiti's tragedy is something to rethink why a 7.0-magnitude earthquake with the epicenter 16 miles offshore west Port-au-Prince devastated the country in one level that is more than pathetic. On 1989, an earthquake of similar magnitude in the area of San Francisco, California only killed sixty-three people.

Behind the Rubble of Haiti

Detrás de los escombros de Haití

We have to observe the rubble of the Haitian's earthquake why also the government and hospital buildings collapsed. This drama requires a deep analysis from different perspectives: social, political, economical, and also from the side of the health care systems of the capital of Haiti, its security, and the construction of the city in an mountainous area without the right building codes.

In summary, the Haitian drama is not only corpses and wounded everywhere, and buildings destroyed. It is more. It is an extreme poverty. It is the negligence of its leaders from generations to generations. It is a history of violence and natural catastrophes. It is the lack of dignity for human beings in a scale without comparison in the western hemisphere.

We have to lift all the rubble of this country in ruin and try to count how many children for decades and decades cried while starving, how many women suffered rape, how many gangs killed each other for food, fun, or perversion, how many politicians turned their heads to the wrong side for corruption or incompetence, or only very low ambitions.

Definitively, Haiti is a drama in a dimension that hit all of us, to all the members of the western hemisphere because despite the efforts of its own citizens and other countries, every time the natural disasters produced additional collapses, the emergencies didn't give the government the intelligence to see behind the scene for the required and needed solutions.
