The last week was a colorful mosaic of political and economic news with more than we saw in the last months and some new issues.

The financier Bernard Madoff, 71 years old, was sentenced to 150 years in prison after admitting in March his responsibility in one of the largest and longest financial frauds in recent times.

Different faces of the Justice
Diferentes caras de la Justicia

- The week began with the news from Honduras about the military coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya. This event reminded us of the long Latin American history of military mutinies and interventions of generals and colonels in the political and civil issues of the majority of the countries of that area. For decades, every time that a military officer didn’t like the initiatives of a constitutional president, new rebellion began with tanks in the streets and the assault on the government buildings.
Questions:
. Do you remember how many military revolutions ousted presidents and members of the congresses across the Latin American countries?
- Are the rebellions and revolutions the right way to solve political differences or punish corrupt governments in the democracies?
- Do you know the first steps in the political arena of key figures of Latin American history like Perón, Pinochet or Chavez?

- La semana comenzó con las noticias de Honduras sobre un golpe militar que desalojó al Presidente Manuel Zelaya. - The financial week ended in the negative territory on the New York markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average lost 157.65 points, or 1.87% on the week closing at 8,280.74. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite declined 41.70 points, or 2.27%, closing the week at 1,796.52. Also during the week, S&P 500 went down 2.45%, and NYSE Composite dropped 2.23%.

In summary, the week showed different faces of what is Justice across the world. Iranian Supreme Leader didn’t balance the claim of an important sector of his population. Honduran army with a group of politicians accused President Manuel Zelaya of corruption and they removed him from his constitutional functions. In the New York a financier, 71 years old, received a sentence of 150 years of prison.

En resumen, la semana mostró diferentes caras de lo que la Justicia es a través del mundo. El Supremo Líder Iraní no balanceó el reclamo de un importante sector de su población. El ejercito hondureño con un grupo de políticos acusó al Presidente Manuel Zelaya de corrupción y lo removieron a él de sus funciones constitucionales. En Nueva York, un financista, de 71 años de edad, recibió una sentencia de 150 años de prisión.

. Perhaps the best of the week was the U.S. Supreme Court judgment against a Connecticut city’s decision. Race, nationality, sex, religion, or age never has to be used as a resource differentiating people from one to another, because all human beings are the same before the Divine Justice according to the biblical books.

Tal vez, lo mejor de la semana fue el fallo de la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos contra la decisión de una ciudad de Connecticut. Raza, nacionalidad, sexo, religión, o edad nunca deben ser usados como un recurso para diferenciar a las personas, unas de otras, porque todos los seres humanos son lo mismo antes la Justicia Divina de acuerdo con los libros bíblicos.

Hello! Welcome to the last weekly communication of June! We are leaving the first half of 2009. In the northern hemisphere, days are longer than before, while the darkness reigns during the mornings in the rest of the planet under the Equator line.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la última comunicación semanal de Junio! Nosotros estamos dejando la primera mitad del 2009. En el hemisferio norte, los días son más largos que antes, mientras la oscuridad reina por las mañanas en el resto del planeta debajo de la línea del Ecuador.

The last week reminded me something from recent history. The protesters in the Tehran’s streets returned us images of the Tiananmen Square protests in China, in 1989. With 26 deaths confirmed and massive arrests, the Iranian authorities showed exactly how the totalitarian regimes silence the shout of freedom from their people.

La última semana me recordó algo de la historia reciente. Los manifestantes en las calles de Teherán nos retornaron imágenes de las protestas de Plaza Tian’anmen en China, en 1989. Con 26 muertes confirmadas y masivos arrestos, las autoridades iraníes mostraron exactamente como los regímenes totalitarios silencian el grito de libertad de sus pueblos.

For you, what was the main issue of the last few days?
- Did you read about the collision that occurred between two trains on the Red Line of the Metrorail in Washington DC?
- Did you watch many special TV programs about Michael Jackson who died at 50 after suffering cardiac arrest?
- Did you know the House passed the climate bill with a small majority of votes? - The week began with more news about Iran. The regime admitted voting errors in at least 50 cities, but the police broke up a group of about a thousand protesters in Tehran. The authorities said it will confront demonstrators with four different security forces: the police, the Basij militia, the Revolutionary Guards and the regular army.

- La semana comenzó con más noticias sobre Irán. El régimen admitió errores en la votación al menos en 50 ciudades, pero la policía disolvió un grupo de acerca de mil manifestantes en Teherán. In summary, Iran was a painful issue for all the week. The tragic events in Tehran remind us of other repressions against civil population like the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, the bloody Prague Spring of 1968, or the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

En resumen, Irán fue un doloroso asunto de toda la semana. Los acontecimientos trágicos en Teherán nos recuerdan otras represiones contra población civil tales como la Masacre de la Plaza Tian’ anmen en 1989, la sangrienta Primavera de Praga de 1968, la Sublevación de Varsovia de 1944.

The oppression of the totalitarian regimes always imposes silence because this is only tool they have to suffocate independent thinkers, and defenders of freedom and civil rights.

La opresión de los regimenes totalitarios siempre impone silencio porque ésta es la única herramienta que ellos tienen para sofocar a pensadores independientes, y a defensores de los derechos civiles.

Millions of shouts from the free citizens of the world aren't enough to stop the totalitarianism actions. Only the blood and deaths of their own victims crack the basements of the oppressive regimes, but this way requires time and more martyrs. It is a painful paradox.

Millones de gritos de ciudadanos libres del mundo no son suficientes para detener las acciones del totalitarismo. Sólo la sangre y muertes de sus propias víctimas agrietan los cimientos de los regímenes opresivos, pero este camino exige tiempo y más mártires. Es una dolorosa paradoja.

This is the third Sunday of June - Fathers Day -, day that honors the fathers of family across more than 50 countries worldwide. It is also the beginning of the summer in the northern hemisphere.

Este es el tercer domingo de junio - Día del Padre-. en que se honra a los padres de familia a través de más de 50 países del mundo. Es también el comienzo del verano en el hemisferio norte.

From my perspective, the hot subjects of the week were Iran and the financial reform. Of course, health care initiatives continue at the top of the issues of Government. By the way, Wall Street punished the new financial regulations and the main indexes of New York market closed in negative territory for the week.

Desde mi perspectiva, los temas calientes de la semana fueron Irán y la reforma financiera. Por supuesto, las iniciativas sobre la salud continúan en el tope de los asuntos del Gobierno. A propósito, Wall Street penalizó a las nuevas regulaciones financieras y los principales índices de los mercados de Nueva York cerraron en territorio negativo por la semana.

- The week began with new developments of the Iranian crisis after the controversial election of a new president. The opposition continued refusing the official results of the votes. Thousands of Iranians, supporters of both President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi protested in the Tehran streets shouting for and against the regime.

During the last few weeks, it was possible to read several articles about the problems of the education across the country. Maybe, the end of the school year 2008-2009 helped to review the system and its deficiencies. Behind the smiles of the graduates and their parents, the observers see critical lacks.

Special thanks for the worries of Bev. She was thinking when I write short is because I am sick. Of course, I miss a lot our Monday sessions in the Broward Library but I am not sick.

Thank you very much Bob for your visit! Our friend and proofreader came to Driggs last Sunday and we made a tour around the Teton and the Swan Valleys. We drove across the farms, small towns and in between the two ranges of mountains of the area. It really was a pleasure that an active member of the Spanish English Club and strong volunteer of the Broward County Library has traveled to the Rocky Mountains.

My apologies if the previous Sunday Bilingual News was shorter than others, but my first obligation was to be the host of Bob in his days in the Teton Valley. Despite of all, like every week, last Sunday I introduced a list of critical subjects to give you the opportunity to rethink the weekly news in an intense bilingual brainstorm. I think this is the most important, the “peaks” of the news and a comprehensive bilingual vocabulary.
