Hello! Welcome to a new communication of the Spanish-English Club with a brief analysis of the main events and news of the last few days to help you in your bilingual practice of Spanish and English.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a una nueva comunicación del Spanish-English Club con un análisis breve de los principales acontecimientos y noticias de los últimos días para ayudarlos a ustedes en la práctica bilingüe de español e inglés.

On Monday, September 20, from Afghanistan came the first information and comments about the weekend elections to elect members of the parliament. The voting was marred by terrorist attacks and fraud allegations.

El lunes 20 de septiembre, desde Afganistán llegó la primera información y comentarios acerca de las elecciones del fin de semana para elegir miembros del parlamento. La votación dañada por ataques terroristas y alegatos de fraude.

On Tuesday, September 21, the US Senate voted against taking up a major military bill that includes a provision allowing the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” regarding gay soldiers. Republicans blocked the debate of the bill. The Senate didn’t reach 60 votes to start debate. The vote was 56 to 43.

El martes 21 de septiembre, el Senado de los Estados Unidos votó contra el intento de generar un proyecto de ley importante sobre asuntos militares que incluya la provisión que revoca la política de “no preguntar, no contar” relacionada con soldados homosexuales. Wednesday, September 22, at the United Nations, more than 140 presidents, primer ministers and kings agreed to launch a $40 billion global strategy to help end poverty.

On Thursday, September 23, Republican leaders unveiled their 2010 campaign platform named “Pledge to America” with their goal to take the control of the House of Representatives in the November midterm election. They plan to repeal health care law and cut government spending.

El jueves 23 de septiembre, líderes republicanos revelaron la plataforma de su campaña 2010 denominada “Promesa a América” con el objetivo de tomar el control de la Cámara de Representantes en la elección de mitad de término de noviembre. Also on Thursday, at the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama pressed Israel to extend the settlement moratorium. He also asked the other world leaders to support the latest Middle East peace negotiations.

On Friday, September 24, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said a vote to extend tax cuts could happen before the November elections, despite Senate wanting to delay any decision about taxes. Different politicians, economists and former authorities of the Federal Reserve and US Treasury Secretary are giving their opinions about this conflictive issue during the last few days.

El viernes 24 de septiembre, la responsable de la Cámara de Representantes, Nancy Pelosi, dijo que un voto para extender los cortes de impuestos podría ocurrir antes de las elecciones de noviembre, a pesar que el Senado quiere demorar cualquier decisión acerca de impuestos. Diferentes políticos, economistas, y autoridades anteriores de la Reserva Federal y de la Secretaría del Tesoro de los Estados Unidos están dando sus opiniones sobre este conflictivo asunto durante los últimos días.

Again Wall Street closed the week in the positive territory. For the five days of financial operations, Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 252.41 points, or 2.38% to 10860.26. Nasdaq Composite gained 65.61 points or 2.83% to close at 2381.22. S&P added 23.08 points, or 2.05% to finish the week at 1148.67.

De nuevo, Wall Street cerró la semana en territorio positivo. Por los cinco días de operaciones financieras, Dow Jones Average se elevó 252,41 puntos, o 2,38% finalizando en 10.860,26. During the week, the press commented on the messages of the President of Iran and other world leaders in the United Nations General Assembly. Also, they talked about the donation of $100 million to the Newark, N.J, school system made by Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. Additionally, the analysts took with surprise the news that Lawrence Summers, the economist who helped design the current economic plan of the White House is planning to leave the government very soon.

Durante la semana, la prensa comentó los mensajes del Presidente de Irán y de otros líderes mundiales en la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas. También, ellos hablaron acerca de la donación de $100 millones al sistema escolar de Newark, N:J. hecha por Mark Zuckerberg, fundador de Facebook. Adicionalmente, los analistas tomaron con sorpresa la noticia que Lawrence Summers, el economista que ayudó en el diseño del actual plan económico de la Casa Blanca está dejando el gobierno muy pronto.

On Monday, September 13, two years after Lehman Brothers collapsed, central bankers from 27 countries agreed to new rules that include substantially raising the amount of capital that banking institutions must hold in reserve to prevent another global financial crisis. Meanwhile, financial and economic analysts continue rethinking why the Government didn’t rescue Lehman Brothers before its total collapse.

El lunes 13 de septiembre, dos años después que Lehman Brothers se derrumbara, autoridades bancarias de 27 países acordaron nuevas reglas que incluyen importantes crecimientos de la cantidad de capital que las instituciones bancarias deben mantener en reserva para prevenir otra crisis financiera mundial. Mientras tanto, analistas financieros y económicos continúan repensando porqué el Gobierno no rescató a Lehman Brothers antes de su total derrumbe.

On Tuesday, September 14, Iran released Sarah Shourd from prison after somebody paid $500,000 bail. She was one of the three American hikers who were arrested and accused of spying more than a year ago. The fate of the two others remains uncertain. Till now, it is not clear who paid the bail.

El martes 14 de septiembre, Irán liberó a Sarah Shourd de la prisión después que alguien pagó una fianza de $500.000. On Wednesday, September 15, Delaware’s primaries finished with a result that was a surprise for some political analysts and other observers. This was not the first case that candidates that distant from Washington surprised others with their long trajectory in the political arena. Will this grassroots movement change the way the politicians make politics?

On Thursday, September 16, The 2010 Census Bureau released a report showing that one in seven Americans lived in poverty last year, and more than 50 million do not have health insurance.

His trip to United Kingdom produced diverse reactions. He met victims of the sexual abuse. Do you think this new attitude from the top leader of the Catholic Church will heal the injuries that produced the sexual abuse in schools and other institutions by a few priests?

También el jueves, el Papa Benedicto XVI comenzó una visita a Gran Bretaña con su más firme confesión acerca de cómo la Iglesia Católica falló en el tratamiento del abuso sexual de los sacerdotes. Su viaje al Reino Unido produjo diversas reacciones. Él se encontró con víctimas del abuso sexual. ¿Piensan ustedes que esta nueva actitud del líder máximo de la Iglesia Católica curará las heridas que produjo el abuso sexual de unos pocos sacerdotes en escuelas y otras instituciones?

On Friday, September 17, President Obama named Elizabeth Warren as the head of a new consumer financial protection agency. The law professor of Harvard was working for the White House as adviser for a period without formal appointment. She created an Internet blog titled Credit Slips where experts and academics write their opinions about how to protect consumers from banking institutions. Is really positive to create new agencies every time there are difficult economic and social issues to solve?

El viernes 17 de septiembre, el Presidente Obama nombró a Elizabeth Warren como cabeza de una nueva agencia de protección de los consumidores financieros. La profesora de leyes de Harvard estuvo trabajando como consejera de la Casa Blanca por un período sin nombramiento formal. Ella creó un blog de Internet titulado Credit Slips donde expertos y académicos escriben sus opiniones acerca de cómo proteger a consumidores de instituciones bancarias. ¿Es realmente positivo crear nuevas agencias cada vez que hay difíciles asuntos económicos y sociales para resolver?

On Sunday, September 19, BP announced that the oil well that produced the huge oil drama in the Gulf of Mexico now is dead. Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the federal government’s point man on the disaster, confirmed that the well was effectively killed five months after the explosion. Do you remember the panic and confusion of the first days after the accident?

El domingo 19 de septiembre, BP anunció que el pozo de petróleo que produjo el gran drama de petróleo en el Golfo de México ahora está muerto. On Monday, September 6, all the United States celebrated Labor Day. President Obama spent the holiday in the Midwest introducing a new $50 billion infrastructure proposal that he says will create new work positions. Several analysts are thinking this proposal is really not the way to change the critical job panorama of today What do you think?

El lunes 6 de septiembre, todos los Estados Unidos celebraron el Día del Trabajo. El Presidente Obama pasó el feriado en el Medio Oeste introduciendo una nueva propuesta de infraestructuras de 50 mil millones de dólares que él dice creará nuevas posiciones de trabajo. On Tuesday, September 7, more news came from Chile about the difficulties to rescue 33 miners trapped since a month ago when a mine collapsed in Northern Chile. According to different sources, the rescue operation will cost a great amount of money and it will require a strong and painful effort. Despite this, the hope of the Andean country and the families of the miners continue higher. Could you accept a job of miner after all the recent accidents in mines around the world?

For the other side, some news said pastor from Florida was reconsidering his plan to burn Koran copies on the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Who knew about the Floridian pastor before?

On Friday, September 10, a natural gas line explosion devastated a San Bruno neighborhood outside San Francisco, in California. The accident produced a lot of damage, destroying more than 50 homes, killing at least one person, including four missing people, and injuring more than 20 others.

From this issue, forward, we decided to rename the “Sunday Bilingual News”, “Weekly Bilingual News” because we think the new name reflects better the timing of this Internet publication.

Desde este número, hacia delante, nosotros decidimos renombrar el “Sunday Bilingual News” como “Weekly Bilingual News” porque pensamos que el nuevo nombre refleja mejor el período de tiempo de esta publicación de Internet.

On Monday, August 9, from Afghanistan, the International Assistance Mission, a Christian charity organization informed they will not leave the Afghan territory despite a group of 10 aid workers and their guides who were killed in an ambush a long distance from Kabul.

Also on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced a plan to save $100 billion with cuts in the expenditures of the military institutions over 5 years. The Pentagon will cut thousands of jobs and reduce its dependence on private contractors. As part of this plan, the Secretary of Defense plans to close a major military command in Norfolk, Virginia. Is it possible to maintain two wars with less money? What are the risks to cut the budget of the military in a crucial moment in the Afghanistan war?

También el martes, el Secretario de Defensa, Robert Gates, anunció un plan para ahorrar 100 mil millones de dólares con cortes de gastos de las instituciones militares por encima de los próximos cinco años. On November 2, every two years on the first Tuesday of the month, the citizens will vote for some senators and all representatives of the US Congress in a national election. During the week, Research In Motion introduced a new smart-phone together with AT&T. It is the BlackBerry Torch, the first device from the Canadian manufacturer running the BlackBerry 6 operating system.

During the last few days, politics and economy continued at the top of the headlines for the papers and TV.

Durante los últimos días, política y economía continuaron en el tope de los titulares de los diarios y la televisión.

The midterm elections are pushing different kinds of debates. A lot of observers link the lack of momentum with the low recovery of the economy and the unemployment that hits a lot of people, also professionals and qualified workers who lost their jobs since the stock market debacle of August 2008.

Las elecciones de mitad de término están empujando diferentes clases de debates. Muchos observadores vinculan el vacío del momento con el bajo recupero de la economía y el desempleo que golpea a mucha gente, también a profesionales y trabajadores calificados quienes perdieron sus trabajos desde la derrumbe del mercado bursátil de agosto del 2008.

But the drama of the jobless is not exclusive to the United States. During the last week, some reports from Spain showed this European country is suffering a massive unemployment despite its economy is stronger than the Greek economy.
