Hello! Welcome to the fourth May 2009 weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! This is a long weekend in the United States due to a very special commemoration. Monday May 25 is Memorial Day, day of the national remembrance of all the men and women who perished while in military service to the country.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la cuarta comunicación semanal de mayo del 2009 del Spanish-English Club! Este es un fin de semana largo en los Estados Unidos debido a una conmemoración muy especial. El lunes 25 de mayo es el Día de los Caídos por la Patria, día en que ser recuerda a todos los hombres y mujeres que perecieron mientras estaban sirviendo militarmente al país.

Did you read the news of the last week? The analysis of the last few days gave me two main pictures. It looks like important protagonists of the national and international politics are playing tough chess games.

¿Leyeron las noticias de la última semana? El análisis de los últimos días me presentó dos cuadros principales. Luce como que importantes protagonistas de la política nacional e internacional están jugando duras partidas de ajedrez.

In the international sphere, the leaders of Israel and Iran made hard movements during the week showing their antagonism about nuclear power.

En la esfera internacional, los líderes de Israel e Irán hicieron duros movimientos durante la semana, mostrando su antagonismo acerca del poder nuclear.

In the domestic arena, President Obama and former Vice President Dick Cheney confronted each other about Guantanamo, habeas corpus, military commissions, interrogation procedures. In this case, the issue was the terrorism policy.

En la arena interna, el Presidente Obama y el ex Vicepresidente Dick Cheney confrontaron el uno contra el otro acerca de Guantánamo, hábeas corpus, comisiones militares, procedimientos de interrogación. En este caso, el asunto fue la política contra el terrorismo.

- The week began with the trip of Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington. He discussed with President Obama the politics of Middle East showing concern for the nuclear deployment of Iran. Questions:
. What is your opinion about the meeting of Israel Prime Minister in Washington? Is Mr. Netanyahu looking for the peace in Middle East or wanting to create an alliance to destroy the growing power of Iran?

- Also on Monday, May 18, the government of Sri Lanka informed the leader of the rebel group Tamil Tigers was killed for its troops.

- On Tuesday, May 19, in Bangkok, Thailand, Seagate Technology of Thailand in partnership with the Thai Robotics Society and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre launched the Thailand Humanoid Soccer Competition. The champion of this competition will represent the country in the World RoboCup 2010, held in Singapore.

The partners want to help in the development of the capabilities of Thai university students in robotics. Each team of students must create robots with a head, torso, two arms and two legs, along with advanced technologies such as electronic vision systems, wireless communications and built-in artificial intelligence. After that, robots have to play soccer like human players and score goals.

- El martes, 19 de mayo, en Bangkok, Tailandia, Seagate Technology de Tailandia en sociedad con la Sociedad de Robótica Tailanesa y el Centro Nacional de Electrónica y Tecnología de Computación lanzó la competencia caratulada “Thailand Humanoid Soccer Competition”. El campeón de esta competencia representará al país en el World RoboCup 2010, a celebrarse en Singapur.

Los socios quieren ayudar en el desarrollo de las capacidades de los estudiantes tailandeses en robótica. Cada equipo de estudiantes debe crear robots con cabeza, torso, dos brazos y dos piernas, junto con tecnologías avanzadas tales como sistemas electrónicos de visión, comunicaciones inalámbricas e inteligencia artificial empotrada. Después los robots tienen que jugar fútbol como jugadores humanos y marcar goles.

- On Wednesday, May 20, U.S. Senate voted 90-6 to block the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the country and denied the While House millions it sought to close the prison.

- El miércoles 20 de mayo, El Senado de los Estados Unidos votó 90 contra 6 para bloquear la transferencia de detenidos de Guantánamo al país y negó los millones que la Casa Blanca buscaba para cerrar la prisión.

- Also on Wednesday, Iran tested its longest-range solid-fuel missile. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad confirmed the test. The launch appeared to be in part Iran’s response to the meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President.

- On Thursday, May 21, President Obama spoke in public about his national-security decisions, including the plans to shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba and transfer some suspected terrorists to the United States soil. Also in the same day, former Vice President Dick Cheney launched a broad defense of the terrorism policies of the previous government and remarked his negative points about the decision to close Guantanamo.

- El jueves 21 de mayo, el Presidente habló en público acerca de sus decisiones sobre seguridad nacional, incluyendo los planes para cerrar el centro de detención de la Bahía de Guantánamo en Cuba y la transferencia de algunos supuestos terroristas al suelo de los Estados Unidos. - The financial week ended with poor results on the New York markets. The Dow Jones Industrials Average gained 8.68 points or 0.10% on the week closing at 8,277.32. In the same period, Nasdaq Composite grew 11.87 points, or 0.71%, closing the week at 1,692.01. Also during the week, S&P 500 went up 0.47% and NYSE Composite climbed 2.24%.

. Are you buying stock? The stock of Google recovered only 0.90% from the fall of the previous week closing at $393.50.

Hello! Welcome to the third May 2009 weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Did you relax after another intense week? The time is going fast, but the newspapers are full of complex issues.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la tercera comunicación semanal del mes de mayo del 2009! ¿Descansaron después de otra intenta semana? El tiempo va rápido, pero los diarios están repletos de complejos temas.

Myself, I couldn’t understand what was the criterion applied by the European Commission to punish Intel with a record fine of 1.06 billion euros ($1.45 billion) for its practices as the dominant provider of PC microprocessors.

Yo mismo, no pude entender cuál fue el criterio aplicado por la Comisión Europea para penalizar a Intel con la multa record de 1 mil 60 millones de euros (1 mil 450 millones de dólares americanos) por sus prácticas como proveedor dominante de microprocesadores para PCs.

For this reason, I returned to the pages of the book “Only the Paranoid Survive”. This book written by Andrew S. Grove warns about the hard competition of the business today.

Por esta razón, retorné a las páginas del libro “Sólo el Paranoico Sobrevive”. Este libro escrito por Andrew S. Grove advierte acerca de la dura competencia en los negocios de hoy.

Andy Grove, co-founder and former chairman of Intel, wrote: “Business success contains the seeds of its own destruction. The more successful you are, the more people want a chunk of your business and then another chunk and then another until there is nothing left. I believe that the prime responsibility of a manager is to guard constantly against other people’s attacks and to inculcate this guardian attitude in the people under his or her management.”

- The week began with the trip of Pope Benedict XVI to Middle-East and the NASA space mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.

- Also on Monday, May 11, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced a key change of leadership of the war in Afghanistan. The Secretary recommended Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal to replace Gen. McKiernan.

Hello! Welcome to another weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! As you know the second Sunday of May is a very special holiday in the United States. We celebrate Mother’s Day.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a otra comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club! Como ustedes saben, el segundo domingo de mayo es una fiesta muy especial en los Estados Unidos. Celebramos el Día de la Madre.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days throughout the world. In France, the people honor mothers on the last Sunday of May. In Argentina, the celebration is on the third Sunday of October. But a large group of countries celebrate on the second Sunday of May.

El Día de la Madre es celebrado en diferentes días a través del mundo. En Francia, la gente honra a las madres en la última semana de mayo. En Argentina, la celebración es el en tercer domingo de octubre. Pero un gran grupo de países celebran en el segundo domingo de mayo.

In the end, the important point is the meaning of the celebration. Frequently, mothers are anonymous heroes in countries with deep economic and social problems. They suffer more than anyone when they don’t have food and medicine for their children. They defend their homes and families and they fight for the best education for their daughters and sons.

Al final, lo importante es el significado de la celebración. Frecuentemente, las madres son héroes anónimos en países con profundos problemas económicos y sociales. Ellas sufren más que cualquiera cuando no tienen comida y medicina para sus hijos. Ellas defienden sus hogares y familias, y luchan por la mejor educación de sus hijas e hijos.

We hope all the mothers linked with the Club enjoy a nice Mother’s Day with their families. Also we send our best wishes to all the women that suffer in the world for their children and the misery that never seems to end across the Planet.

- The week began with better news from the economic side. Some indicators show a slow increase in construction spending and sales of houses. Also the panic about the swine flue has began to stop.

- La semana comenzó con mejores noticias desde el lado económico. Algunos indicadores muestran un lento incremento en gastos de construcción y en ventas de casas. También el pánico sobre la gripe porcina ha comenzado a parar.

- On Tuesday, May 5, news from Pakistan informed us thousands of panicked residents fled the Swat valley north of the capital of the country following the breakdown of a fragile truce between government forces and the Taliban guerrillas.

The last few days were rich in new political initiatives. President Obama met President Calderon of Mexico with the intention to fight together against the traffic of drugs and guns. In parallel with the approach to the big neighbor of the south, the Washington Administration showed clear intentions to open a dialogue with Cuba.

Los últimos días fueron ricos en nuevas iniciativas políticas. El Presidente Obama se reunió con el Presidente Calderón de México con la intención de luchar juntos contra el tráfico de drogas y armas. About the previous Sunday Bilingual News issue, we have to clarify the use of the word “Pascua”. We can use it in plural only when we talk about the Christian and Jewish celebrations together. In other cases, we have to write in singular: “Feliz Pascua de Resurrección”, “Feliz Pascua Judía”. Frequently, we say: “Felices Pascuas” because we treat Jewish and Christian communities together. If we read the Bible, we see both celebrations are related.

Acerca del número anterior de Sunday Bilingual News, tenemos que aclarar sobre el uso de la palabra “Pascua”. Podemos usarla en plural solo cuando hablamos acerca de las celebraciones cristiana y judía en conjunto.
