We are ending a hard year also with surprises during the Holidays. The incident aboard a Northwest Airlines-Delta flight in Detroit on December 25th returned the panic about acts of terrorism. The devils never take vacations.

- On Thursday morning, the US Senate voted 60-39 to approve to an overhaul to the nation’s health care system. The process showed fierce opposition from Republicans and some division among Democrats. Howard Dean who ran for president in 2004 denounced this bill as a sellout, while President Obama heralded it as a historic breakthrough. The next step will be to reconcile Senate and House versions of the bill.
- El jueves a la mañana, el Senado de los Estados Unidos aprobó por 60 votos contra 39 la revisión del sistema nacional de salud. El proceso mostró una fiera oposición de parte de los republicanos y alguna división entre los demócratas. I am entirely dissatisfied with where we are right now in terms of jobs, and the fact that families out there on the eve of Christmas are still really worried about being able to pay the bills or send their kids to college or have health care for themselves.”

From our point of view, Christmas was not a stop for the bad news. China, Iran and the string of attacks against Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad showed a gloomy picture in opposition of that the Holidays Season means. It is very sad, but it is the reality.

We are living Christmas, a special celebration that has a lot of meanings across the world.

Its roots came from the Bible. In the New Testament, one of the Gospels written by Luke explains the first Christmas’ meaning. This Gospel gives the historic references of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.

Sus raíces vinieron de la Biblia. En el Nuevo Testamento, uno de los Evangelios escrito por Lucas explica el primer significado de Navidad. Este Evangelio da las referencias históricas del nacimiento de Jesús en Belén.

Today, Christmas is a day of feelings… It is family day when children, parents and other members of the family exchange gifts, smiles, affection, and good moments.

Hoy Navidad es un día de sentimientos… Es un día de familia cuando hijos, padres y otros miembros de la familia intercambian regalos, sonrisas, cariño, y buenos momentos.

But Christmas also is a painful day for all the others who haven’t bread and food on the table, for everybody who does not have a job, and for the human beings who live alone without family and warm feelings.

Pero Navidad también es un día doloroso para todos los otros que no tienen pan y comida sobre la mesa, para quienes no tienen trabajo, y para los seres humanos que viven solos, sin familia ni cálidos afectos.

Now we have iPhones, Blackberrys, fast cars, and airplanes but a lot of people are living worse than Joseph and Mary when they laid Jesus in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn of Bethlehem.

Ahora tenemos iPhones, Blackberrys, rápidos automóviles y aviones, pero mucha gente está viviendo peor que José y Maria cuando ellos colocaron a Jesús en un pesebre porque no había lugar para ellos en la posada de Belén.

Despite of all, we have to heal our injuries and continue working for better moments.

Climate Change: Polar Bears in Florida?

- In Copenhagen, tensions climbed inside and outside the U.N. Climate Change Conference. On Wednesday, protesters clashed with police outside the convention center as more than 100 world leaders were arriving for the last sessions of the summit to the Danish capital. Meanwhile negotiators continued the battle to reach a climate agreement.

- En Copenhague, las tensiones subieron adentro y afuera de la Conferencia del Cambio Climático de las Naciones Unidas. El miércoles, manifestantes chocaron con la policía afuera del centro de convenciones cuando más de 100 líderes mundiales estaban llegando a las últimas de sesiones de la cumbre de la capital danesa. - On Friday, President Obama talked at the Climate Change Conference with a tough tone because China didn’t accept any condition to the target problem of climate change. About this subject, the US President said: “These measures need not be intrusive or infringe upon sovereignty. They must, however, accept an agreement that is credible, and that we are living up to our mutual obligations. Without such accountability, any agreement would be empty words on a page.”

- El viernes, el Presidente Obama habló en la Conferencia de Cambio Climático con un tono duro porque China no aceptó ninguna condición relativa al objetivo de las condiciones climáticas. Acerca de este asunto el Presidente de los Estados Unidos dijo: “Estas medidas no necesitan ser intrusivas o violar las soberanías. Additionally, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva added: “What we do not agree is that the most important figures on planet Earth sign any kind of document or paper just to say we signed a document or a paper. I would love to leave Copenhagen with the most perfect signed document in the world, but if we do not have the conditions to build such a document by now, I am not sure some angel or some wise man will come down to this plenary and will put in our mind some intelligence we lacked up until now.”

Además, el Presidente Brasileño, Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva agregó: “Nosotros no podemos aceptar que las personalidades más importantes del Planeta Tierra firmen cualquier clase de documento o papel sólo por decir que nosotros firmamos un documento o un papel. Yo quisiera dejar Copenhague con el más perfecto documento firmado en el mundo, pero si nosotros no estamos en condiciones de crear tal documento por ahora, yo estoy seguro que ningún ángel u hombre sabio bajará a este plenario para poner en nuestras mentes algo de la inteligencia que ahora hasta ahora carecemos.”

From our point of view, the main subjects of the week were the Climate Change Conference and the last actions in the US Senate to past the bill for health care. Do you agree?

Desde nuestro punto de vista, los principales asuntos de la semana fueron la Conferencia del Cambio Climático y las últimas acciones en el Senado de los Estados Unidos para pasar el proyecto de ley sobre salud. ¿Están de acuerdo?

In both cases, no angel or wise man came down to put in the mind of the decision-makers some minimum intelligence to change the flowing of ideas for the right direction.

En ambos casos, no ángel o no hombre sabio bajó para poner en la mente de quienes toman decisiones algo de la mínima inteligencia requerida para cambiar el fluir de ideas por la correcta dirección.

The actions around Copenhagen summit were symbolic. Really nobody wants to make the sacrifice for others. In particular, China is acting with intolerant manners after all the Communist regime has received from the western countries to grow as a industrial power.

Las acciones alrededor de la cumbre de Copenhague fueron simbólicas. Realmente nadie quiere hacer sacrificios por otros. In the US Capitol, the negotiations to achieve the 60 votes after compromises of compromises show a difficult ending and maybe an insufficient bill that could harm the future of Americans.

From our point of view, the week between Monday December 7 and today was a rich mosaic of different subjects to discuss in a bilingual practice. But overall, the President Obama’s speech accepting the Nobel Peace Price in Oslo was really the major issue for both the people who criticized him and his supporters.

Desde nuestro punto de vista, la semana entre el lunes 7 de diciembre y hoy fue un rico mosaico de diferentes temas para discutir en una práctica bilingüe. Pero de todo el conjunto, el discurso del Presidente Obama aceptando el Premio Nobel de la Paz en Oslo fue realmente el más importante asunto tanto para la gente que lo criticó a él como a sus defensores.

Some people applauded the President Obama’s speech as a classic American speech of a war president, but the majority of the population doesn’t understand the links between this award and the current status of the President Obama as commander in chief of a nation involved in two wars. For the other side, a lot of Europeans didn’t like the accepting of the Nobel Peace Price by the US President just a week after he ordered 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

Algunas personas aplaudieron el discurso del Presidente Obama como un clásico discurso americano de un presidente en guerra, pero la mayoría de la población no entiende la relación entre el premio y el rol del Presidente Obama como comandante en jefe de una nación involucrada en dos guerras. Por otro lado, a muchos europeos no le gustó la aceptación del Premio Nobel de la Paz de un presidente de los Estados Unidos una semana después que él ordenara 30.000 tropas más para Afganistán.

In summary, when we reread President Obama’s speech we don’t see him receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, we imagine the Mio Cid or another of the Christian heroes of the Middle Ages fighting against the Moors or the Muslims of the Holy War. And this is real paradox. No real warrior -or commander in chief - could accept the flags of the peace before the total defeat of the enemy. For the real heroes of the Holy War, the Peace Prizes were the bloody heads of the beheaded enemies in middle of the roar of the battle and the steel-noise of the last swords in action.

En resumen, cuando releemos el discurso del Presidente Obama, nosotros no vemos a él recibiendo el Premio Nóbel de la Paz en Oslo, imaginamos al Mio Cid o a otro de los héroes cristianos del Medioevo luchando contra los moros o los musulmanes de la Guerra Santa. Y ésta es la real paradoja. No real guerrero – o comandante en jefe – podría aceptar las banderas de la paz antes de la total derrota del enemigo. Para los héroes reales de la Guerra Santa, Los Premios de la Paz fueron las cabezas ensangrentadas de los enemigos decapitados en medio del rugido la batalla y el ruido a acero de las últimas espadas en acción.

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club con el análisis de las principales noticias en ambas lenguas: español e inglés!

Newspapers, radio and TV programs talked a lot about President Obama’s plan for the Afghan war. First it was his speech at West Point on Tuesday evening, announcing 30,000 more troops join to the current US army in that country.

Periódicos, radio y programas de televisión hablaron mucho sobre el plan del Presidente Obama para la guerra afgana. Primero, fue su discurso en West Point el martes a la tarde, anunciando que 30.000 más tropas se usen al actual ejército de los Estados Unidos en aquel país.

Second, the Obama administration began the efforts to sell its new strategy to members of Congress. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton defended the president plan in front the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Some of the members of both parties criticized him with very rough statements.

En medio de las noticias del fortalecimiento de las tropas de Afganistán y el informe de desempleo, la sesión frente al Congreso del presidente del directorio del Fed, Ben Bernanke, por la nominación para un segundo período como cabeza de Reserva Federal fue otro importante asunto. General Motors came back to the top of the news with the resignation of its chief executive officer, Frederick ‘Fritz’ Henderson and the temporary replacement by board chairman Edward E. Whitacre Jr. Nobody explained the real reasons of the departure. Mr. Henderson was in charge of the automobile company since last March when his predecessor, Rick Wagoner was forced to resign by the Obama administration after the Government rescued GM with strong financial support.

General Motors retornó al tope de las noticias con la renuncia de su jefe ejecutivo, Frederick “Fritz” Henderson y el reemplazo temporal por el presidente del directorio Edward E. Whitacre Jr. Nadie explicó las razones reales de la partida. In other news, Barnes & Noble confirmed the first shipment of its new e-books nook is expected for January 15th, 2010. Through its Internet website, and its chain of shops across the country, the bookstore is promoting the first version of "nook".
