- Nuclear treaty between United States and Russia: Presidents Obama and Medvedev formalized a historic nuclear arms pact to slash nuclear arsenals. Some American politicians disagree with the terms of the treaty that requires the ratification by the US Congress.

- Tratado nuclear entre los Estados Unidos y Rusia: Los presidentes Obama y Medvedev formalizaron un histórico pacto de armas nucleares para reducir los arsenales nucleares. Algunos políticos americanos están en desacuerdo con los términos del tratado que requiere la ratificación por parte del Congreso de los Estados Unidos.

- Fatal accident in a mine of West Virginia: The massive explosion killed 25 miners. They continue looking for other workers missing and analyzing the security conditions of this mine located in Montcoal, West Virginia. The hope for the survival of 4 missing miners declines. The authorities think they were also killed by the initial massive explosion.

- Mortal accidente en una mina de West Virginia: Una explosión masiva mató a 25 mineros. Se continúa buscando a otros trabajadores perdidos y analizando las condiciones de seguridad de esta mina localizada en Montcoal, West Virginia. La esperanza por la supervivencia de 4 mineros perdidos declina. Las autoridades piensan que ellos también fueron muertos por la primera explosión masiva.

- Wall Street across the last week: Dow Jones Industrials Average and Nasdaq Composite finished last Friday higher than seven days ago. Dow Jones closed at 10997.35 and Nasdaq ended at 2454.06.

- Wall Street a través de la última semana: Dow Jones Industrials Average y Nasdaq Composite finalizaron el último viernes más arriba que siete días atrás. Dow Jones cerró a 10.997,35 y Nasdaq terminó en 2.454,06.

- Retirement of the Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens: The oldest member of the US Supreme Court is stepping down after 35 years servicing as Associate Justice. President Obama has to select a candidate for the seat that John Paul Stevens will leave vacant after the summer season.

- Retiro del Juez de la Suprema Corte John Paul Stevens: El más antiguo miembro de la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos está dando un paso al costado después de 35 años sirviendo como juez asociado. El Presidente Obama tiene que seleccionar al candidato para el asiento que John Paul Stevens dejará vacante después del período de verano.

- Death of Polish President and others in an airplane crash in Russia: President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and dozens of members of the Polish government were killed Saturday when the Tu-154 airplane crashed outside the Russian city of Smolensk apparently due to heavy fog. The news impacted in all Europe and Poland is mourning the tragedy.

- La muerte del presidente polaco y otros en un accidente aéreo en Rusia: El Presidente Lech Kaczynski, su esposa y una docena de miembros del gobierno polaco murieron el sábado cuando el avión Tu-154 se estrelló afuera de la ciudad rusa de Smolensk aparentemente debido a una densa niebla. La noticia impactó en toda Europa y Polonia está llorando la tragedia.

In other subject of the week, Nokia informed it began offering an unrestricted free music-downloading service in China through the program "Comes With Music". The Finnish mobile phone maker linked this program with the customers who buy one of eight selected models of new phones from its brand. With this initiative, Nokia is fighting against the advance of the iPhones of Apple and the growth of the offer of new devices running the Android operating system of Google.

En otra noticia de la semana, Nokia informó que ha comenzado a ofrecer un servicio de bajar música gratis sin restricciones en China a través del programa “Llegan con música”. El fabricante de teléfonos móviles finlandés vinculó este programa con los clientes que compran uno de ocho modelos seleccionados de nuevos teléfonos de su marca. Con esta iniciativa, Nokia está luchando contra los iPhones de Apple y contra el crecimiento de la oferta de nuevos dispositivos corriendo el sistema operativo Android de Google.

The company said it is excited to see consumers building collections of the music they love through this service. China is a massive opportunity and a challenging market to address. But Nokia didn’t say its goal to sell more and more devices because since 2009 it is losing its leadership as top world mobile phone provider.

La compañía dijo que está entusiasmada por ver que los consumidores construyan colecciones de la música que a ellos les gusta a través de este servicio. China es una oportunidad masiva y un desafiante mercado para direccionar. Pero Nokia no remarcó su objetivo de vender más y más dispositivos porque desde el 2009 está perdiendo su liderazgo como el primer proveedor mundial de teléfonos móviles.

What do you think? Will this move destroy the business of the music producers in order to sell more mobile phones? Nokia uses a similar program in Russia, Brazil, and Indonesia, and it is planning to do the same in India. The maker declined to explain how it will pay the author copyright fees to the music creators. Today there are companies that pay only pennies to writers and artists. Will Nokia walk the same line?

¿Qué piensan ustedes? ¿Destruirá con este movimiento, el negocio de los productores música en orden de vender más teléfonos móviles? Nokia usa un programa similar en Rusia, Brasil, e Indonesia, y está programando lo mismo en la India. El fabricante no explicó como pagará los derechos de autor a los creadores de música. Actualmente hay compañías que pagan sólo monedas a los escritores y artistas. ¿Caminará Nokia por la misma línea?

Hello! Welcome to the new weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club with analysis of the main subjects of the last few days in both languages: Spanish and English!

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a una nueva comunicación del Spanish-English Club con el análisis de los principales temas de los últimos días en ambas lenguas: español e inglés!

The week known as Holy Week was not a period to relax and take vacation. It began with the cables from Moscow about twin suicide bombings in the subway of the Russian capital.

La semana conocida como Semana Santa no fue un período de descanso y para tomarse vacaciones. Comenzó con los cables de Moscú acerca de las bombas suicidas gemelas en los subterráneos de la capital rusa.

Through other important news, on Monday March 29, the country knew President Obama made a surprise and secret trip to Afghanistan during the weekend to visit the American troops in combat and discuss with President Hamid Karzai the anti-corruption efforts of the Afghan government.

A través de otra importante noticia, el lunes 29 de marzo, el país se enteró que el Presidente Obama hizo un viaje sorpresa y secreto a Afganistán durante el fin de semana para visitar a las tropas americanas en combate y discutir con el Presidente Hamid Karzai los esfuerzos contra la corrupción del gobierno afgano.

On Wednesday, March 31, again President Obama made news for his plans to lift the ban on offshore oil and gas exploration along the Atlantic and Alaskan coasts and in the Gulf of Mexico.

El miércoles 31 de marzo, de nuevo el Presidente Obama fue noticia por sus planes de levantar las prohibiciones de explotación costera de petróleo y gas a lo largo del Océano Atlántico, las costas de Alaska y en el Golfo de México.

On Friday, April 2, the Jobs’ Report from March was important subject of press and economic analysts. Employers added 162,000 jobs last month, the biggest monthly gain in three years and the government informed it hired 48,000 temporary workers for the 2010 Census. Despite those advances, the jobless rate held steady at 9.7%.

El viernes 2 de abril, el Informe de Trabajo de marzo fue un importante tema de la prensa y de los analistas económicos. Wall Street’ markets closed Friday session with the small advances in comparison with a week ago. Dow Jones Industrials Average gained 76.71 points, or 0.71%, to close the five days at 10,927.07 points. Nasdaq Composite grew 7.45 points, or 0.31%, to end at 2,402.58 in the same period. Additionally, S&P 500 went up 0.99%, and NYSE Composite climbed 1.83%.

Los mercados de Wall Street cerraron la sesión del viernes con pequeños avances en comparación con una semana atrás. Dow Jones Industrials Average ganó 76,71 puntos, o sea 0,.71%, para cerrar los cinco días en 10.927,07 puntos. Nasdaq Composite creció 7,45 puntos, o sea 0,31%, para terminar en 2.402,58 in el mismo período. Además, S&P 500 fue hacia arriba 0,99%, y NYSE Composite trepó 1,83%.

On Saturday April 3, Apple opened the doors of its stores and partners started selling iPad, the new digital tablet the company announced last January. According to the press communication from the same company, during the first day in sale, Apple sold more than 300,000 units of its new digital creature.

El sábado 3 de abril, Apple abrió las puertas de sus tiendas y de socios comenzando la venta de iPad, el nuevo tablero digital que la compañía anunció en enero pasado. De acuerdo con comunicación de prensa de la misma compañía, durante el primer día en venta, Apple vendió más de 300.000 unidades de su nueva criatura digital.

Seres humanos invisibles a las estadísticas

After we learned the March’s employment report of the US Labor Department, we went to the street to match the figures of the report with reality. We wanted to know if the new jobs added on last month change in something the perception of the people about the current social-economic crisis.

Después de conocer el informe de empleo de marzo del Departamento de Trabajo de los Estados Unidos, nosotros fuimos a la calle a aparear los números del informe con la realidad. Nosotros queríamos conocer si los nuevos trabajos agregados en el último mes cambian en algo la percepción de la gente sobre la actual crisis económica-social.

With surprise, we saw only members of the government and journalists applauded the news. In general, till now, the common people don’t see any big changes. More of them have fear for something worse. Those who really have money don’t care if the unemployment rate is 9.7% or 9.6%. And the people with nothing continue similar to before without hope for any fast improvement of the social situation.

Con sorpresa, vimos que solamente los miembros del gobierno y periodistas aplaudieron la noticia. En general, hasta ahora, la gente común no ve algunos grandes cambios. Muchos de ellos tienen temor por ago peor. Aquellos que tienen realmente dinero no se preocupan si el índice de desempleo es 9,70% o 9,60%. Y la gente que no tiene nada continúa como antes sin esperanza por alguna mejora rápida en la situación social.

A walking tour around Brickell Financial Sector of Miami was very instructive. We saw they continue building beautiful skyscrapers in every corner till now vacant, more glassed constructions and futuristic landscape.

En una recorrida caminando por el Sector Financiero Brickell de Miami fue muy instructiva. Nosotros vimos que ellos siguen construyendo hermosos rascacielos en cada rincón hasta ahora vacío, más construcciones vidriadas y paisaje futurista.

Next to one of the higher skyscrapers, we found a parade of workers shouting against their contractors for working conditions. This was the first signal that not all is running perfect in the new center of the bankers of South Florida.

Junto a uno de los rascacielos más altos, encontramos un desfile de obreros gritando contra sus contratistas por condiciones de trabajo. Esta fue la primera señal que no todo está marchando perfecto en el nuevo centro de banqueros del Sur de la Florida.

No far from the Brickell’s financial institutions, on the edge of a public park visited by tourists and happy people, the scene was worse. A man with a long beard and hair, in old clothes presenting a bad appearance – homeless – was sitting on the floor trying to be invisible from the casual passer-by.

No lejos desde las instituciones financieras de Brickell, en el borde de un parquet público visitado por turistas y gente feliz, la escena fue peor. Un hombre con barba y pelo largo, con ropas viejas que presentaban mala apariencia – una persona sin hogar – estaba sentado en el piso tratando de ser invisible a los transeúntes casuales.

We tried to talk with him, but he refused without words, only with gestures. He was a pacific homeless person in silence, not asking for money, lonely, and without trash around him. .We wouldn't know his name or his history. He was cleaning the nails of his hands and smoking something. His portable house was nothing, just some bags with stuff and nothing more.

Nosotros tratamos de conversar con él, pero se negó sin palabras, sólo con gestos. Él era una pacífica persona sin hogar en silencio, no pidiendo dinero, sólo, y sin basura alrededor de él. Nosotros no pudimos conocer su nombre o su historia. Se estaba limpiando las uñas de sus manos y fumando algo. Su casa portátil era nada, sólo algunas bolsas con algo y nada más.

This scene immediately overflowed our mind with different questions: Is he an American citizen? How long has he been on the street? What was his main reason to move there? No home or another social conflict? Was he at least at one time included in the list of the unemployed people? Somebody from the Census 2010 took his data?

La escena inmediatamente desbordó nuestra mente con diferentes preguntas: ¿Es un ciudadano Americano? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que está en la calle? ¿Cuál fue la principal razón para mudarse ahí? ¿Por no tener hogar o por otro conflicto social? ¿Fue al menos una vez incluido en la lista de la gente desempleada? ¿Alguien del Censo 2010 tomó sus datos?

By the way, there are a lot of homeless persons like this man in each metro area of the country. Our perception is when a person goes to the street, he or she lose the identity of human being. He/she is excluded from social statistics, and nobody cares if he/she lives or not. Nobody makes good efforts to reintegrate them into society.

A propósito, hay muchas personas sin hogar como este hombre en cada centro poblado importante del país. Nuestra percepción es que cuando una persona va a la calle, él o ella pierden la identidad de ser humano. Él/ella es excluido de las estadísticas sociales, y nadie se interesa si él o ella vive o no. Nadie hace buenos esfuerzos para reintegrarlos en la sociedad.

The drama is really serious because these human beings who look invisible to statistics, ignored by society and institutions, they will never return to a normal world. They will continue till the last days of their lives as zeroes of zeroes of the real figures of the society losing their words, their speaking, their feelings, and all that God put them on Earth to enjoy in a healthy way.

El drama es realmente serio porque estos seres humanos que lucen invisibles para las estadísticas, ignorados por la sociedad y las instituciones, ellos nunca podrán retornar a un mundo normal. Ellos continuarán hasta los últimos días de sus vidas como ceros de ceros, de los números real de la sociedad, perdiendo sus palabras, su habla, sus sentimientos, y todo lo que Dios puso para ellos en la Tierra para disfrutar de una manera saludable.

Is it right to isolate people because they lost their jobs and their homes? It is a good behavior of the civilized society pushes others to a level worse than wild animals? What do you think? What is the solution to this drama?

Sunday Bilingual News - Special Edition

Dear Friends:

Today is Easter (Pascuas), a very important religious celebration for Catholics and Christians. Also during this week, the Jewish community is celebrating Passover (Pascuas de los judíos) between March 30 and April 5th.

Both celebrations have important historic and tradition roots that come from generations to generations. They are days for reflection, nice encounters with family and friends, delicious feasts, chocolate-eggs, and chocolate-bunnies.

We hope you are enjoying these days with your family and friends.

VERY IMPORTANT! Despite the fact that we were thinking to suspend the development and publishing of the Sunday Bilingual News of the Spanish-English Club and due to not having sponsors who support economically the effort, we will try again to continue writing new issues with good material for your bilingual experience. Thanks to all of you that during the last few days showed recognition for the Spanish-English Club online and special affection for us.
