Dear Friends,

We feel afraid to comment that we have to suspend the normal writing and publishing of Sunday Bilingual News of the Spanish-English Club and Brief Analysis of Comlab Corp website for economic problems due to sponsors and customers don't pay regularly.

We always helped to everybody who asked me to share my knowledge, experience and energy, in special to educational institutions like the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Broward County Library , and to local libraries, small businesses, and young professionals.

We will try to continue delivering the Sunday Bilingual News issues in the way I can manage them.

Note: The contents of both Internet sites are updated to the last week with the Sunday Bilingual News and Brief Analysis issues. However, the comlab-corp website is not in a good shape now. I created it in 2001. Recently we didn’t have the resources to update its layout and presentation. I was working during the last few months to improve the style of the English summaries, but bad news of the last week are stopping my plans.

Hello! Welcome to the Sunday Bilingual News, weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club!

We are advancing across the second half of March 2010. The springtime has begun in the northern hemisphere and the fall in the south below the Equator.

Nosotros estamos avanzando a través de la segunda parte de marzo del 2010. La primavera ha comenzado en el hemisferio norte y el otoño en el sur debajo del Ecuador.

Every year, March is an important month because it is one of the key inflection points of the year. On March 31, a lot of companies end their first financial quarter of the year. Also in the northern hemisphere wild life begins to wake up. The days are longer than from December to February. Frequently, it is possible to see flowers and new green in parks and streets, despite till now the snow continues in the Rocky Mountains and other places of the northern regions.

Cada año, marzo es un importante mes porque es uno de los puntos de inflexión del año. El 31 de marzo, muchas compañías finalizan su primer trimestre financiero del año. También en el hemisferio norte, la vida silvestre comienza a despertar. Los días son más largos que desde diciembre a febrero. Frecuentemente, es posible ver flores y nuevo verde en parques y calles, a pesar que hasta ahora la nieve continúa en las Montañas Rocosas y en otros lugares de las regiones del norte.

In particular, the current March looks very complex in the political arena. During the last few days, we heard thousands of debates about the health care bill. A lot of external observers don’t understand the “process” - also many Americans - how the Congress will decide the future of health of the citizens of the country. We are learning the concepts and definitions about democracy we studied in school match little with reality.

En particular, el actual mes de marzo luce muy complejo en la arena política. Durante los últimos días, hemos escuchamos miles de debates acerca del proyecto de ley de salud. Muchos observadores externos no entienden el “proceso”, además numerosos americanos no comprenden como el Congreso decidirá sobre el futuro de la salud de los ciudadanos del país. Estamos aprendiendo que los conceptos y definiciones acerca de democracia que estudiamos en la escuela coinciden poco con la realidad.

Elsewhere, Intel Corporation announced the Science Talent Search 2010 Awards that every year the semiconductor maker gives to high-school students, one of most prestigious pre-college science competition in the country. The jury for the competition honored Erika DeBenedictis, 18, from Albuquerque, New Mexico with the top award of $100,000 for her project developing a software navigation system to help improve spacecraft travel through the solar system.

En otra orden, Intel Corporation anunció los Premios de Búsqueda de Talentos 2010 que cada año el fabricante de semiconductores da a estudiantes de la escuela secundaria, una de las competencias de ciencia más prestigiosas del país en el nivel anterior al colegio (o universidad). El jurado de la competencia honró a Erika DeBenedictis, de 18 años de edad, de Albuquerque, Nuevo México, con el premio mayor de $100.000 por su proyecto de desarrollo de la programación de un sistema de navegación para ayudar a mejorar los viajes de naves espaciales a través del sistema solar.

While children from American families frequently complain because they think the school-work is hard, children of immigrants accept the hard work to grow in knowledge and future.

Wall Street’ markets closed Friday session with the most important indexes in negative territory. But for the week, Dow Jones Industrials Average, Nasdaq Composite, S&P 500, and NYSE Composite ended slightly higher than a week ago. Dow Jones Industrial advanced 1.10% during the five days of the week to close at 10,741.98 points. Nasdaq Composite gained 0.29% to end at 2,374.41 in the same period.

Los mercados de Wall Street cerraron la sesión del viernes con los índices más importantes en territorio negativo. Pero por la semana, Dow Jones Industrials Average, Nasdaq Composite, S&P 500, y NYSE Composite finalizaron ligeramente más alto que una semana atrás. Dow Jones Industrials avanzó 1,10% durante los cinco días de la semana para cerrar en 10.741,98 puntos. Nasdaq Composite ganó 0,29% para terminar en 2.374,41 en el mismo período.

Toads walking to their love ponds
Sapos caminando hacia sus charcas del amor

Today we have some pictures published by a German newspaper a week ago about the toads that walk to their love ponds during the month of March, in the beginning of the springtime. These pictures show toads from different parts of the world, but the most surprising is a march of toads across a Chinese road walking to a nearby pond to breed.

Hoy tenemos algunas fotografías publicadas por un diario alemán una semana atrás acerca de los sapos que caminan a sus charcas del amor durante el mes de marzo, en el comienzo de la primavera. Estas fotos muestran sapos de diferentes partes del mundo, pero lo más sorprendente es una marcha de sapos a través de un camino chino caminando hacia la charca cercana para procrear.

According to the writer of the article, this phenomenon it is not exclusive for China, despite the current invasions of Chinese toads crossing the roads are higher than in many other regions. The German paper says some countries close their roads to allow the safe passage of the toads during their breeding period.

De acuerdo con el escritor del artículo, este fenómeno no es exclusivo de la China, a pesar que las actuales invasiones de sapos chinos cruzando caminos es mayor que en muchas otras regiones. El diario alemán dice que algunos países cierran sus rutas para permitir un pasaje seguro de los sapos durante su período de procreación.

The picture from China shows bicycles and cars driving in between the toads and of course, killing a lot of these animals. The journalist comments that during the last few years the invasions of toads in China on March are increasing maybe as consequence of the earthquake that hit some territories of this country two years ago.

La fotografía de la China muestra bicicletas y automóviles manejando entre los sapos y por supuesto, matando a muchos de estos animales. El periodista comenta que durante los últimos años, las invasiones de sapos en la China en marzo se han incrementado quizás como consecuencia del terremoto que golpeó algunos territorios de este país dos años atrás.

We have to remember the toad is a batrachian, one of the members of the species of vertebrate amphibians without tail, but with cold blood. The toad has similar appearances to the frog, but toads walk on their feet where frogs jump. Also, the toads normally live in dry habitats except when they are in their breeding period.

Tenemos que recordar que el sapo es un batracio, uno de los miembros de los animales de especies de vertebrados anfibios sin cola, pero con sangre fría. El sapo tiene algunas apariencias de las ranas, pero los sapos caminan sobre sus pies donde las ranas saltan. También, los sapos normalmente viven en lugares secos excepto cuando ellos están en su período de procreación.

Toads are generally secretive animals but they come out in mass during the mating period to find breeding ponds, which are often the same ponds in which they were spawned.

Both males and females travel long distances from their habitat to find each other. After they arrive at the water pond or lake, the males establish their territories in the freshwater areas by calling to other males to let them know to stay away. Depending upon appropriate water temperature the female releases her eggs in the water where the male then releases its sperm to fertilize.

Ambos, machos y hembras viajan largas distancias desde sus hábitat para encontrarse uno con el otro. In summary, this series of pictures and comments we found in the German newspaper help us to remember every March a lot of things happen that are not news for the people of the big cities because they are distant from nature. By the way, during the time we were living in the Rocky Mountains region we learned that springtime is definitively the wake up time for the wild life and it is a very important period of the biological cycle of animals and plants.

En resumen, esta serie de fotografías y comentarios que hemos encontrado en el diario alemán nos ayudan a remarcar que cada marzo muchas cosas pasan que no son noticias para la gente de las grandes ciudades porque ellos están distantes de la naturaleza. A propósito, durante el tiempo que nosotros estuvimos viviendo la región de las Montañas Rocosas aprendimos que la primavera es definitivamente el despertar de la vida silvestre y es un muy importante período de ciclo biológico de animales y plantas.

Hello! Welcome to a new issue of Sunday Bilingual News of March! The last few days came with a mix of news, something very interesting to practice English and Spanish with different subjects:

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a nuevo número del Sunday Bilingual News de marzo! Los últimos días llegaron con una mezcla de noticias, algo muy interesante para la práctica del inglés y el español con diferentes temas:

- Iraq’s parliamentary elections. Authorities said 62.9% of Iraq’s 19 million eligible voters participated in Sunday’s elections. American General Odierno, responsible for the allied troops in this country said: “People of Iraq Have Embraced Democracy.”

- Elecciones parlamentarias en Iraq (o Irak). Las autoridades dijeron que el 62,90% de los 19 millones de votantes registrados de Iraq participaron de las elecciones del domingo. El General Americano Odierno, responsable de las tropas aliadas en este país dijo: “La gente de Iraq abrazó la democracia.”.

- New Nigerian sectarian massacre in the conflict between Muslims and Christians. Days ago, armed groups attacked Christian villages during the night killing a lot of women and children when all the population was sleeping.

- Nueva masacre sectaria nigeriana en el conflicto entre musulmanes y cristianos. Días atrás, grupos armados atacaron aldeas cristianas durante la noche matando a muchas mujeres y niños cuando toda la población estaba durmiendo.

- New government in Chile two weeks after the earthquake. The elected president Sebastian Piñera assumed the administration of the country from the Casa de la Moneda, Santiago de Chile.

- Nuevo gobierno en Chile dos semanas después del terremoto. El presidente electo Sebastián Piñera asumió la administración del país desde la Casa de la Moneda, en Santiago de Chile.

- Middle East tensions over the Jewish new settlements in East Jerusalem. The news about the settlements came when Vice President Joe Biden was visiting Israel and Palestine in a new American effort to build peaceful relationships between the neighboring countries.

- Tensiones en Medio Oriente por los nuevos asentamientos judíos en el este de Jerusalén. La noticia sobre los asentamientos llegó cuando el Vicepresidente Joe Biden estaba visitando Israel y Palestina en un nuevo esfuerzo americano para cimentar relaciones pacíficas entre los dos países vecinos.

- White House in campaign. President Obama delayed his trip to Indonesia and Australia in order to follow the ongoing negotiations to pass the health care bill.

- Supreme Court versus White House. The rift between White House and the Supreme Court over President Obama’s State of the Union opened a big question mark about the crisis of the institutions. During the week, Chief Justice John Roberts at a University of Alabama event showed his disappointment that the President criticized the Supreme Court in his speech in front of Congress including members of this independent power of the Government.

- La Suprema Corte contra la Casa Blanca. La desavenencia entre la Casa Blanca y la Suprema Corte relacionado con el discurso del Estado de la Unión del Presidente Obama abrió un gran interrogante acerca de la crisis de las instituciones. Durante la semana, el Juez que preside la Corte Suprema, John Roberts, en un evento en la Universidad de Alabama, mostró disgusto porque el Presidente criticó a la Corte Suprema en una conferencia frente al Congreso y delante de los miembros de este poder independiente del Gobierno.

- Apple said all is ready to introduce iPad in the domestic and international markets during April. You can place orders online beginning last week. But some customers have fears to buy the first digital tablets that come from the factory.

- Apple dijo que todo está listo para introducir el iPad en los mercados internos e internacionales durante abril. Ustedes pueden poner órdenes de compra en línea comenzando desde la semana pasada. - Wall Street’s indexes closed in positive territory from the results of a week ago, but with small advances. Dow Jones Industrials Average ended the Friday session at 10624.69 points. During the last five days of operations, it gained 58.49, or 0.55%. Meanwhile, Nasdaq Composite rose 41.31 points, or 1.78%, in the same period to close at 2367.66. From your point of view: What was the most important subject of the last few days? What is your opinion and arguments?

Desde vuestro punto de vista: ¿Cuál fue el tema más importante de los últimos días? ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión y argumentos?

We think all the news we have referenced before are important. But we feel the obligation to make special remarks about the latest news from Chile, the South American country that occupies a long, narrow strip between Andes Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Also it borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast and Argentina to the east.

Nosotros pensamos que todas las noticias que hemos referenciado antes son importantes. Pero nos sentimos en la obligación de hacer un comentario espacial acerca de las últimas noticias de Chile, país sudamericano que ocupa una larga y angosta franja de tierra entre la Cordillera de los Andes por el este y el Océano Pacífico por el oeste. Además tiene bordes con Perú por el norte, Bolivia por el noreste y Argentina por el este.

Today Chile has approximately 16 million 8 thousand inhabitants who live in 756,945 square kilometers (302,778 square miles). It is a very important producer of copper, fruits, fish, seafood and wood products.

Hoy Chile tiene aproximadamente 16 millones 800 mil habitantes que vienen en 756.945 kilómetros cuadrados (302.778 millas cuadradas). Es un muy importante productor de cobre, frutas, pescado, mariscos y productos de madera.

South America: Chile in the News
América del Sur: Chile en las noticias

Even now the shaking of the latest earthquake in American territory continues in the headlines of the paper and TV, Chile again shocked external observers of the world with the news that it has a new president, the first elected right-wing leader in 50 years after Michelle Bachelet, with strong socialist roots, ended her cycle last Thursday. On March 11, Sebastián Piñera, a billionaire businessman and former Chilean senator, assumed as the new president of the Republic of Chile.

Aún ahora que las sacudidas del ultimo terremoto en territorio americano continúan en los titulares de los diarios y la televisión, Chile nuevamente conmovió a los observadores externos del mundo con la noticias que tiene un nuevo presidente, el primer líder de derecha elegido en 50 años después que Michelle Bachelet, con fuertes raíces socialistas, terminó su ciclo el pasado jueves. El 11 de marzo, Sebastián Piñera, un hombre de negocios multimillonario y ex-senador chileno, asumió como el nuevo presidente de la República de Chile.

In times when the majority of the government leaders of the continent are left-wing leaders and after José Alberto Mujica Cordano, former-Tupamaros terrorist, assumed as president of Uruguay on March 1st, the change that Sebastián Piñera implies in the government of Chile is a reasonable motif of surprise.

En tiempos cuando la mayoría de los líderes de gobierno del continente son líderes de izquierda y después que José Alberto Mujica Cornado, ex-terrorista Tupamaro asumiera como presidente de Uruguay el 1ero de marzo, el cambio que Sebastián Piñera implica en el gobierno de Chile es un razonable motivo de sopresa.

Nevertheless, all who studied the history of the continent know the different territories that today are South America, before and after Spain and Portugal conquered them, were not nations that lived as peaceable countries. A lot of wars bled whole civilizations and nations during hundreds of years also decimated by internal quarrels of brothers and opposed political principles.

Sin embargo, todos aquellos que han estudiado la historia del continente conocen que los diferentes territorios de lo que hoy es América del Sur, antes y después que España y Portugal los conquistarán, no fueron naciones que vivieron como pacíficos países. Muchas guerras desangraron completas civilizaciones y naciones durante cientos de años, también diezmando por las internas rencillas de hermanos y de opuestos principios políticos.

For example, the Araucanians, natives who lived across the current Chilean territory, put up strong resistance against Pedro de Valdivia, Spanish conqueror who founded the city of Santiago de Chile. Elsewhere, long years after the Spanish troops were defeated during the Independence War, in Paraguay, the conflict among Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil against the Paraguayan regime of General Francisco Solano Lopez was a devastating war that ended with a complete generation of lost men because no man in condition to fight returned from the battle when the south-tropical country resulting in only debris, desolation and corpses.

Por ejemplo, los araucanos, nativos que vivieron a través del territorio actual chileno, pusieron fuerte resistencia contra Pedro de Valdivia, el conquistador español que fundó la ciudad de Santiago de Chile. En otra parte, muchos años después que las tropas españolas fueron derrotadas durante la Guerra de la Independencia, en Paraguay, le conflicto entre Argentina, Uruguay y Brasil contra el régimen paraguayo del General Francisco Solano López fue una guerra devastadora que terminó con una completa generación de los últimos hombres porque no hombre en condiciones de luchar retornó de la batalla cuando el país subtropical concluyó solamente en escombros, desolación y cadáveres.

Based on these historic roots, it is not strange that till now the political geography of South America shows diverse leaderships from extreme conservative groups to also former terrorist combatants and periodically changes from one side to the other of the political scenario.

En base a estas raíces históricas, no es extraño que aún hasta ahora la geografía política de América del Sur muestre diversos liderazgos desde grupos conservadores extremos hasta ex combatientes terroristas, y periódicamente con cambios de un lado al otro del escenario político.

In particular, in the Chilean case, after the suicide of the socialist president Salvador Allende and the long military regime in the hands of General Augusto Pinochet, this country found its way to make social and conservative revolutions in peace. For this reason, despite the new president representing very different ideological ideas that the previous one followed, nobody who knows the Chilean evolution of the last decades feel fear thinking about political purges that a lot of other countries in the continent continue living through when the governments change.

En particular, en el caso chileno, después del suicidio del presidente socialista Salvador Allende y del largo régimen militar en las manos del General Augusto Pinochet, este país encontró la manera de hacer revoluciones sociales y conservadoras en paz. Por esta razón, a pesar que el nuevo presidente representa diferentes ideologías que el previo que sucedió, nadie que conoce la evolución chilena de las últimas décadas tiene miedo pensando en purgas políticas como muchos otros países del continente continúan viviendo con los cambios de gobiernos.

In summary, it is probable the passage from the former president Michelle Bachelet to Sebastian Piñera would be a new lesson in democracy for all the brothers of South America and for other countries in the world that can never accept working together between opposing politicians and leaders.

Hello! Welcome to the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! This is the first Sunday Bilingual News of March 2010, till now with snow and cold weather across a large geography of the country, but hot temperatures in the political arena.

¡Hola! Bienvenidos a la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club! Este es el primer Sunday Bilingual News de marzo del 2010, hasta ahora con nieve y tiempo frío a través de una gran geografía del país, pero con calientes temperaturas en la arena política.

March began with a new very intense political week. Members of both parties are thinking about the elections in November. Health care, unemployment, economy are some of the issues in debate.

Marzo comenzó con una nueva muy intensa semana política. Miembros de ambos partidos están pensando acerca de las elecciones en noviembre. Salud, desempleo, economía son algunos de los asuntos en debate.

On the international side, the earthquake of Chile produced new concerns about deaths and damages in another country very different from Haiti, and a long experience in seismic movements.

Del lado internacional, el terremoto de Chile produjo nuevas preocupaciones acerca de muertos y daños en otro país muy diferente que Haití, y con una larga experiencia en movimientos sísmicos.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton visited some Latin American countries stopping in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Health care returned to the top of the news. President Obama pushed for Congress to complete health care reform legislation in the next few weeks. A new tactic came to the table: the reconciliation process that has been law since 1974.

The week ended with a new unemployment report from the US Labor Department. The national rate held steady at 9.7 percent in February, but jobless rates for black and Latinos remained high.

Health Care: Frustrations and Hopes

During the week, President Obama called to the members of the Congress to pass the health care bill with these words: “I believe the United States Congress owes the American people a final vote on health care reform.”

From both sides, politicians are feeling the pressure of the White House, while the population lives in total frustration for all the actions without an end.

In the meantime, a huge apparatus is moving to take action when the health care reform will come. A lot of technology companies like IBM, HP, Dell, Microsoft and others, plus hospitals and medical insurance organizations are redefining the way they process the patient personal data and improving the health information systems. The big question: Will they help us or they will be a new way the medical organizations could make more money from every aspirin or drop they dispense to the patients?

It is time to extend the scope of what we define as health care. Not every time we find the magic formula to feel better in the hand of the medical doctors.

The visit to emergency rooms is another source of frustration for the patients without good medical insurance. This happens not only in the United States. Everywhere in the world, some cheap medicines produce other sicknesses.

For example, good food, the natural vitamins of fruit, and a healthy mode of living we could increase our hopes for a better life without tables, capsules, or drops.

The list of alternative resources that everybody has in his/her own hands include gym sessions, yoga, bicycle tours, walking, and of course, the practice of a sport like swimming.

The first time, you try to swim one or two lanes in the swimming pool looks like an impossible feat. But there are a lot of people with physical disabilities who don’t care if outside it is snowing or all is frozen, when they enjoy hours of swimming in an indoor swimming pool.

La primera vez que ustedes tratan de nadar uno o dos largos en una piscina (o alberca, o pileta) parece como una hazaña imposible. Pero hay mucha gente con incapacidades físicas quienes no se preocupan si afuera está nevando o está todo congelado, cuando ellos disfrutan horas de natación en una piscina cubierta.

The good food, continuous physical exercise, and a life with discipline are ways to improve our hopes of better health without the dependence of the health care systems that always were tied to political decisions without control from our side.

La buena comida, el ejercicio físico continuo, y una vida con disciplina son maneras de mejorar nuestras esperanzas de una salud mejor sin la dependencia de los sistemas médicos de la salud que siempre han estado atados (o extrechamente dependientes) a decisiones políticas fuera de nuestro control.

The history of health care reforms is long in this country. Across the time, some government initiatives were good, and others no. Frequently, every time the members of Congress discuss this kind of issue, their discussiones transcend the nature of health care to other subjects like how to manage a reconciliation process or how to appeal to tactics that produce the frustration of the citizen. For this reason, everybody have to balance their health care with the possibilities the law offers plus their own initiatives to maintain body and soul healthy despite external negative conditions.

La historia de las reformas de la salud es larga en este país. A través del tiempo, algunas iniciativas del gobierno fueron buenas, y otras no. Frecuentemente, cada vez que los miembros del Congreso discuten esta clase de asunto, sus discusiones trascienden la naturaleza del tema salud a otros asuntos tales como manejar un proceso de reconciliación o como apelar a tácticas que producen la frustración de los ciudadanos. Por esta razón, todos tienen que balancear su cuidado de la salud con las posibilidades que la ley ofrece más sus propias iniciativas para mantener cuerpo y alma saludable, a pesar de condiciones externas negativas.
