Do we have something different for our Sunday Bilingual News of today? I think yes. What do you think?

For you, what was the main subject of the last few days?

Personally, I think I have something better to share with you today. Barnes & Noble gave a larger step than Amazon.com in the line of e-books. It launched the world’s largest eBookstore to access to e-books across a wide range of platforms, including iPhone and iPod touch, BlackBerry smart-phones, as well as most Windows and Macintosh laptops and desktop computers, and the forthcoming Plastic Logic eReader device.

The new Barnes & Noble eBookstore begins with 700,000 titles at $9.99. Amazon.com is offering 300,000 titles for its Kindle e-book. A new cultural and educational revolution is at our doors.

¡Hola!

Before we continue with the current issue, I would like to invite you to visit the Spanish-English Club blog. During the last few days It was updated with a new version of the previous Sunday Bilingual News titled: “What poverty really is?” If you enter the Internet blog, perhaps you will find some surprises: an extended analysis of news of the week ended on July 12, and a rich vocabulary list with comments and observations.

Today, the selection of the more important issues of the period July 13-19 looks easer than in the previous one. Between Monday and Thursday were the hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayor before the Judiciary Committee of Senate. The press followed the nomination process for the new Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court with a lot of attention and it was very interesting to hear questions and answers.

Also during all the week, different companies posted the financial results of the quarter ended during the last days of June. Wall Street was positively impacted by the Intel’s presentation and the healthy position of IBM, but it didn’t like Google’s slower growth compared to other times.

For you, what was the main subject of the last few days?
- Do you know the Iranians returned to the streets and an ex-leader said the government has lost the trust of the country for the post-election unrest?
- Did you read about the bomb attacks at two American hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia?
- Did you follow the lastest news from the financial sector, in particular the potential bankruptcy of CIT?
- Do you know the main Wall Street indexes closed the week in positive territory? (Intel, IBM and other technology companies were key factor in this case).

Personally, I paid attention to the nomination process of the new Justice of the Supreme Court because I think it is a good lesson in how democracy works in the United States.

Always Supreme Court Justices are appointed by the President. But the appointment must be approved by a majority of the Senate. The Constitution did not set any requirements for the members of the Supreme Court. However, most have been lawyers and have had previous experience as judges on lower courts, and/or teaching law or have held public office.

In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. After that, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was also named Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Now, the nominee is judge Sonia Sotomayor, daughter of a family originally from Puerto Rico, who grew up in New York. Till now, it is not clear if she will take the same political position held by the resigning Justice David H. Souter.

For you, what was the main subject of the last few days?
- Did you continue looking at the news from Honduras? Did you know former President Manuel Zelaya couldn’t return to his country?
- Did you pay attention about the ethnic clashes in Xinjiang, China, between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese that left at least 156 dead and more than 1,000 wounded?
- Did you follow the President Obama’s trip to Russia and his meetings with President Dmitri A. Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin?
- Do you know that President Obama met Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican City? They agreed on helping the poor.
- Did you read about all the cuts General Motors made to get out of bankruptcy protection? Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn are not more GM products.
- Do you know the main Wall Street indexes fell again for the week?

From my point of view, the most important event the week was the G-8 Summit in L’Aquila, Italy. Two key issues of this conference were climate warming and the food problem of the poor countries.

In particular, I paid attention to the initiative about food for poor countries. Personally, I have my doubts about the attitude of rich countries in favoring poor countries because frequently, when the rich people give something it is not because they realize what is poverty, they think in the terms of new businesses being established... But at least we have to believe in the sensitivity of all who felt the pain of hunger next to their stomachs. Of course, poverty is more than food. It is the "No!" that bleeds hearts and sink children, adults and elders in a sea of gloom and desperation.

In summary, the week was intense, exhausting, controversial, and without a terminal mark of punctuation.

Meanwhile, the main displays positioned in front of the leaders of the rich countries, showed terrible pictures of the misery that remains cruel and hard in the lands of the New Millennium.

But the most important, all these actions helped again to re-open key questions about what poverty really is…
- Is it not food over the home table?
- Is it not money in the pocket to buy what we need for a normal life?
- Is it the bad nutrition of children, adults and elders in marginal communities?
- Is it the low education to use agricultural and other resources in an effective way?
- Or is it the “NO!” that closes doors against the noses of human beings who want to earn respectably their own money to feed themselves and their families?

ANALYSIS OF THE NEWS

Different faces of the Justice
Diferentes caras de la Justicia

- The week began with the news from Honduras about the military coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya. This event reminded us of the long Latin American history of military mutinies and interventions of generals and colonels in the political and civil issues of the majority of the countries of that area. For decades, every time that a military officer didn’t like the initiatives of a constitutional president, new rebellion began with tanks in the streets and the assault on the government buildings.
Questions:
. Do you remember how many military revolutions ousted presidents and members of the congresses across the Latin American countries?
- Are the rebellions and revolutions the right way to solve political differences or punish corrupt governments in the democracies?
- Do you know the first steps in the political arena of key figures of Latin American history like Perón, Pinochet or Chavez?

- On Monday, June 29, Federal District Judge Denny Chin condemned Bernard Madoff with a sentence of 150 years in prison, the maximum for his crimes.
Questions:
. Will this sentence solve the current problems of all the Madoff’s investors who lost thousands or millions of dollars?
. What is the real meaning of 150 years of prison? Experts in financial crimes say, in this case, the maximum sentence is a symbol of the justice against corrupt financiers and business people. Do you agree?
. Do you think the Madoff’s wife – Ruth- and other members of the family are innocent?
. How many other people do you think are behind this huge fraud with victims everywhere in the world?

- On Tuesday, June 30, Iranian Council confirmed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory over his challenger Mir Houssein Mousavi after a partial recount of votes.
Questions:
. Assume you are Mir Houssein Mousavi. What should be your reaction?
Do you continue fighting for justice? Do you emigrate abroad? Or you accept in silence the decision of the Supreme Leader and his group?

- On Thursday, July 2, the U.S. Labor Department published a weak jobs report from June 2009. The unemployment rate rose to 9.5%, sagging hopes for a second-half year economic rebound.
Questions:
