Sunday Bilingual News

From Driggs, Idaho

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to another Sunday Bilingual News issue, the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club!

¡Hola!

Last week we celebrated the start of springtime in the northern hemisphere. But the previous Sunday indicated we were wrong when we said: “Good bye snow!” Just a day after we enjoyed warm temperatures around 70 degrees, last Monday the snow returned to the northwest area of the country. Also now, a big flood is hitting North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

A blizzard with heavy snow and strong winds forced the closure of numerous routes in the area during the last weekend of March. It looks that we are again in the middle of winter.

Now, we will make a new bilingual practice session talking about the some of the last week’s news.

All the best,

Domingo

ANALYSIS OF THE NEWS

Core problem of education
Problema central de la educación

- The week began last Monday with very bad news about the weather in different northern states. The snow returned to Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, and also to Oklahoma. In addition, the Red River overflowed in areas of North Dakota and Minnesota due to heavy rain and ice dams in different locations on the Red River.
Questions:
. Do you know North Dakota is a flat valley without natural refuges? Did you know why the Red River overflowed the area? Under very cold temperature, the melting snow immediately produces ice solid as a rock blocking the flow of the water for the rivers and other streams.

- Also on Monday, March 23, the Treasury Department introduced a plan to take toxic assets off the banks’ balance sheets. The initiative produced good and bad reactions. Paul Krugman, Economy Nobel Prize 2008, indicated doubts about the success of this initiative.

- On Tuesday, March 24, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, expressed his concerns about education in these moments of economic crisis. He spoke to a government audience in Washington DC, and he said: “In particular, I believe investment in education is essential. Education is the starting point for success for individuals and the prerequisite for economic growth and prosperity for communities. It’s vital that we support efforts to provide children with access to a high-quality education and adults with access to ongoing technology skills training.” Upgrading teacher's skills is also important.

- On Thursday, March 26, several sources commented IBM cutting about 5,000 US positions and transferring the jobs to India. What do you think about the expense of education in the United States and other Western nations?

- Myself, I sent in a question. It was about education. I wrote to President Obama: “From my point of view, the core problem of education is not more schools and teachers. It is the “educational model”. When the institutions don’t have the right model, the best efforts fall into the abyss. Could you explain to us how you are modeling our children’s education? Thank you.”

ANALYSIS OF THE NEWS

The metal soul of robots
El alma metálica de los robots

- The week began last Sunday with the first news about the bonuses paid by AIG to a group of employees. The debate about this subject continued through all the days of the week. According to the Wall Street Journal of Saturday March 21: “Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said documents reviewed by his office show that American International Group Inc. paid out $218 million in bonuses, more than the $165 million previously disclosed. Mr. Blumenthal says the documents show that 73 people received at least $1 million apiece, and five of those received bonuses of more than $4 million.”
Questions:
. During the week everybody talked about what “bonus” really means. The common dictionaries say the bonus is an extra payment usually in appreciation for the work done when the company has good incomes. Some financial companies in the US pay on the basis of salary plus commission or bonus. What is your definition of bonus? Could you try to put in order all your ideas about what “bonus” means?

The soul of Gynoid

Returning to the view of Gynoid, a lot of Japanese companies have worked before in the creation of robots. Sony, Hitachi, NEC had developed robots as production tools for industry and as toys for kids and education. Now, the Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology is taking a new step: female-robots to show nice clothes on the catwalks of the fashion show. What will be the next stage? Could you imagine a female-robot with soul? Will it have a soft soul or a metallic soul? Please, guess…

Since the first decades of the automation, writers of science fiction created different metal creatures with qualities similar to human beings, with good and bad behaviors. Frequently, the robots walk, work and talk, but they don’t smile. On the other hand, the novel literature links “smiles” and “crying” with the feelings of sensitive beings gifted with souls, rich in qualities and humanity.

Probably, the creators of Gynoid thought her smile as the window of her soul. Reports about the new Japanese robot explain multiple details of her body and weight - 94.6 pounds - but not what kind of expression is her smile. Perhaps, till now, her parents are trying to find a divine puff to humanize the soul of HRP-4C.

The previous week began in Washington DC with the ceremony to extend the polemic stem cell research. Tuesday was the day for education in the White House, while in New York, the fraud victims were waiting for the confession from financier Bernard L. Madoff.

Earmarks came back to the scene with a big debate about what is ethical or not in the behavior of members of Congress.

Two massive shootings, one in Germany and the other in Alabama, put the bloody pictures in first place.

In all these cases, observers continue searching for the truth behind the events and decisions. What will be the benefits of the new stem cell research policy? How many Dr. Frankenstein disciples waited for this moment? Why some members of Congress defend the earmarks with passion and interest?

Please look at the picture enclosed in this issue. After that, try to explain in Spanish and/or English, what are the links between the bird looking for food on the frozen ground and the cases of this week.

The science competition organized by Intel always discovers new talent in students who expend their younger years searching like birds for food on the frozen ground.

Eric Larson, 17, of Eugene, Oregon, was not the first time he competed in science contests. Before, he went to Vietnam for a mathematic competition. Now, at Intel Science Talent Search, he presented his research project classifying mathematical objects called fusion categories. He worked in areas where he didn’t find previous papers. His real merit was to describe for the first time the fusion categories.

The second winner of the Intel Science Talent is also another 17 year old student. His name is William Sun from Chersterfield, Missouri. William received a $75,000 scholarship for his biochemistry project that studied the effects of a recently discovered molecule that could potentially help efforts to treat bacterial infections or prevent degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

As Mary Masterman, 2007 First Place Winner said: “Even if you think that what you want to do is impossible, go ahead and go for it because you never know what you can accomplish.”

The research of new subjects always requires internal energy and strong decision. Sometimes, it all looks like frozen ground where it is impossible to find food. Frequently, the searching for the knowledge is similar to the seeking for food when all around is desert, tundra or an iced steppe.

Year over year, of course, the winners of the Intel Science Talent Search are more than birds looking for food. They are the beginners of the new generation of citizens that will become the world of the future.

From Driggs, Idaho

Dear Friends:

Hello! Welcome to the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Today is the second Sunday of March. Did you remember to change the clock? Spring is at the doors for a lot people but not till now in the Rocky Mountains and the northern states of the country.

¡Hola!

And everywhere we have listened to questions concerning the following: Why the new administration didn’t focus on the immediate crisis before its ambitious projects? What is the first priority when General Motors, General Electric, Citibank, Bank of America are next to the “black hole”? Did we fall another level?

To change your mood, today I have a test. Please look at the picture enclosed in this issue. After that, try to explain in Spanish and/or English, what do you think when you see an orange over a map of the world? What are the links between this fruit and the Earth? Use your imagination, not your stomach!

The orange and the map will help you to learn about important news of last week that was not in the pages of the main papers and neither on TV.

THE OLDEST WORDS

Meanwhile, scientists at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, have discovered that “I”, “we”, “who” and the numbers “1”, “2” and “3” are amongst the oldest words, not only in English, but across all Indo-European languages.

The University of Reading investigates how languages evolve, and whether that evolution follows any rules. It uses supercomputers to reconstruct the rate at which words evolve and predict future changes to our vocabulary.

The researchers say the oldest words of today have been in existence for at least 10,000 years. This statement matches with studies of ancient monuments in the Middle East region. Always on the walls of the temples and tombs we find symbols expressing words as “I and “we” and the first nature numbers.

According to the scientists, the evolution of the words differs from one word type to another. The research has shown that conjunctions evolve faster than prepositions. The following order from fastest to slowest is: adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns and numerals.

The report delivered by the University of Reading also says: “50% of the words we use today would be unrecognizable to our ancestors living 2,500 years ago.”

The analysis of the evolution of vocabulary is not only important for the University of Reading. It is important for all of us. In particular, it is important for frequent travelers and the curious people who want to understand other cultures and other people.
