This weekend is an important holiday in different places of the world. From Saturday February 20 to Wednesday February 24 is Carnival. Do you know how the people celebrate Carnival in Rio de Janeiro? Did you hear about the Venetian Carnival? All Germany is on holiday this weekend. Similar to Rio, the people celebrate in Trinidad and Tobago, in Barranquilla, Colombia…

Este fin de semana es una importante fiesta en diferentes lugares del mundo. Desde el sábado 20 de febrero y hasta el miércoles 24 de febrero es Carnaval. ¿Conocen como la gente celebra Carnaval en Río de Janeiro? ¿Oyeron hablar sobre el Carnaval Veneciano? In the United States, Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans, Louisiana are the most famous celebrations.

Maybe we need a good season with parades and masquerade balls. The psychologists recommend special entertainment when the pressure is high. What do you think? - The week began on Monday with the holiday of the Presidents Day and the expectations about the economic and financial pending problems.

February is advancing with more and more news every day. Do you feel better or worse than a week ago? Could you measure your level of "hope" for the future? Could you measure your level of enthusiasm, your energy for tomorrow? Do you need ethanol or internal power in your engines?

Last week was very important… I am not talking about the stimulus package or the financial rescue… This week was very important for other different reasons.

Intel went to Washington with a big flag: “Building in the United States!” Paul Otellini, the chief executive of Intel, made an uncharacteristic call for investments in the United States at the Economic Club in Washington DC.

Kindle 2 versus the paper books

- The week began on Monday with the first press conference from President Obama since he arrived to the White House. The President said to fail in the economic recovery plan could lead to a catastrophe. In 2001, President Bush used the fear of terror attack to convince people to support the war against terrorism. Now, President Obama is using the “catastrophe” of the economy to move forward its stimulus plan.
Questions:
. Do you feel fear for a potential “catastrophe”? In this case, maybe you have to read: “Collapse” from Jared Diamond. He wrote about the economic “dislocation”. Another option is the reading of the academic papers in Russian language from Igor Panarin about the “disintegration” of the United States in 2010.

- La semana comenzó el lunes con la primera conferencia de prensa del Presidente Obama desde que llegó a la Casa Blanca. El Presidente dijo que fallar en el plan de recuperación económica puede llevar a una catástrofe. - Also on Monday, Amazon.com introduced the second generation of its electronic book named Kindle 2. The new digital device includes some interesting innovation features. Through a new experimental “Text-to-Speech” feature, Kindle 2 converts words on a page to the spoken word so readers have the option to read or listen. Users can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and their spot is automatically saved. Pages turn automatically while the content is being read so readers can listen hands-free. In addition, users can chose to be read by male or female voices and can choose to speed that suit their listening preference. The read-to-me feature is able to be used on the reading of books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and personal documents.

. What do you prefer: read or listen? Do you like to read an electronic book or a paper book? Are you planning to buy the Kindle 2? The new Kindle will be available for $359 on February 24. But remember, after that, you have to pay a monthly fee if you want to read newspapers or magazines. Several analysts didn’t like the new device. Maybe for you all is wonderful…

February looks like a month with action. What will the balance be after all the input?

Febrero luce como un mes con mucha acción. ¿Cuál será el balance después de todo lo que está ocurriendo?

This winter is not a snow season, it is a frozen season. The animals don’t find food in the ground because they only find a hard cover of ice without blades of grass. People don’t find jobs, they only find cold faces, bad moods and closed doors.

Este invierno no es una estación de nieve, es una estación congelada. Los animales no encuentran comida en la tierra porque sólo encuentran una dura cubierta de hielo sin hojas de hierba. La gente no encuentra trabajo, sólo encuentran caras frías, mal humor y puertas cerradas.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama suffered his first crisis only two weeks after his arrival to the White House. The Tom Daschle affair was more serious because his offense involved more than taxes. In a moment, that the normal worker has to count to the last coins to pay his/her bills, it is intolerable to know that a politician amassed $5.2 million in just two years, and didn’t pay his taxes due on a part of it. Is this how the patriotism works?

Mientras tanto, el Presidente Barack Obama sufrió su primera crisis a sólo dos semanas después de su llegada a la Casa Blanca. El asunto de Tom Daschle fue muy serio porque su crimen involucró más que impuestos. En un momento, en el cual el trabajador normal tiene que contar hasta las últimas monedas para pagar sus cuentas, no es tolerable conocer que un político acumuló 5 millones 200 mil dólares en sólo dos años, y no pagó sus impuestos correspondientes. ¿Es así como el patriotismo funciona?

On the other hand, the economic stimulus package walked through a difficult labyrinth during all the week, ended on Friday evening with a poor agreement in the House & Senate bill. The question is: What will be next? The population needs real jobs to eat food, and solve their family problems. It looks like the “famous” stimulus will continue advancing through a dangerous tunnel.

Por otra parte, el paquete del estímulo económico caminó a través de un difícil laberinto durante toda la semana, finalizando el viernes a la noche con un pobre acuerdo de proyecto de ley de la Casa de Representantes y el Senado. La pregunta es: ¿Qué es lo que sigue? La población necesita trabajos reales para comer comida, y resolver sus problemas de familia. Luce como que el “famoso” estímulo continuará avanzando a través de un peligroso tunel.

The problem is not only the Tom Daschle affair or the difficulties to find the right dimension and the effective instruments to implement the stimulus package. Both cases are showing a more complex reality and an abyss without end. When the avalanche begins at the top of hill, nobody expects it could destroy all that it finds in its route and bury a complete civilization.

El problema no es solamente el asunto de Tom Daschle o las dificultades para encontrar una correcta dimensión y los instrumentos efectivos para implementar el paquete del estímulo. Ambos casos están mostrando una realidad más compleja y un abismo sin fin. Some weeks ago, Wall Street Journal columnist Andrew Osborn from Moscow wrote an apocalyptic article about the future of the United States. He said: “For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few accepted his argument – that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. – very seriously”.

Algunas semanas atrás, el columnista de Wall Street Journal, Andrew Osborn, desde Moscú, escribió un artículo apocalíptico acerca del futuro de los Estados Unidos. Hello! Welcome to a new issue of Sunday Bilingual News, the weekly communication from the Spanish-English Club! Today we are entering the second month of 2009, February. Did you realize 2008 is part of history now?

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a un nuevo número de Sunday Bilingual News, la comunicación semanal del Spanish-English Club! Hoy estamos entrando al segundo mes del 2009: febrero. ¿Se dieron cuenta que el año 2008 es ya parte de la historia?

January was a painful and bloody month. Every week came with a lot of news and more problems.

Enero fue un mes doloroso y sangriento. Cada semana llegó con muchas noticias y más problemas.

During the fourth week, President Barack Obama made the first efforts to find his route. He went to the Congress promoting his economic stimulus package but he didn’t change the mind of the Republican Block and 11 Democrats. He also spoke to the Arab world through a TV interview. And he criticized bankers for giving themselves $18.4 billion in bonuses in a moment when the finance businesses doesn’t run well.

Durante la cuarta semana, el Presidente Barack Obama hizo los primeros esfuerzos para encontrar su ruta. Fue al Congreso promoviendo su paquete de estímulo económico pero no cambió la forma de pensar del Bloque Republicano ni de 11 demócratas. También habló al mundo árabe a través de una entrevista de televisión. But was Washington really the center of the world during this week? Maybe no… In Davos, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum 2009 began its sessions on January 28 with the attendance of more than 40 heads of state, governments and a high number of business leaders of different countries. More than 2,500 participants were attending the meeting.

Did you know the motto of the forum was: "Shaping the Post-Crisis World"? Till now, could we talk about "Post-Crisis"?

Meanwhile, during the last two weeks, Wall Street heard the cry of a big group of top executives, who explained to the investors why they didn’t achieve their revenues and net income forecasts during the fourth quarter of 2008 and how many layoffs they are planning. By the way, several days ago, Caterpillar said: "We will cut 20,000 jobs…". Now, it is planning 20,000 more...Do you have the painful list?

- The week began on Monday with massive layoffs announcements from Home Depot, Caterpillar, Sprint Nextel, Pfizer and Texas Instruments. These companies plan to cut more than 75,000 jobs in the United States and around the world.
Questions:
. What do you think about the massive layoff across different sectors of the economy? Could you understand this sickness? A lot of companies say they will cut 10%, 12%, 16% of their payroll.

Word of the week: Davos is a city of Switzerland, located on the Landwasser River, in the Swiss Alps, between the Plessur and Albula Range. It is the largest ski resort of the country and the famous host of the World Economic Forum, an annual meeting of global political and business elites. Historic sources say it was founded on 1280. From the middle of the 18th century, it became a tourist destination for the rich and ailing people because its microclimate is good for lung disease patients.
