Sunday Bilingual News

From Driggs, Idaho

Dear Friends:

As I promised before, here you have new material to improve your bilingual experience.

On Saturday, when I walked with my camera, I found more than a small house built in the top of the tree. Please read the story and see the pictures.

You can learn new vocabulary and write sentences to practice the language. In addition, you have several questions. The homework is voluntary.

Have a nice work week!

SPANISH PRACTICE – PRACTICA DE ESPAÑOL

For some Spanish speakers, this small house is a "rancho". Of course, this "ranch" is very different to the big Texan ranches.

Others define this small house as "choza", "cobertizo", "tapera"... Maybe you disagree with these names or you find other word to describe it.

Could you describe this house with your Spanish vocabulary? Try please...

Several members of the club answered the first message. They said in English: “It is a tree house”.

Remember:
- wood = madera
- tree = árbol
- branch = rama
- roof = techo
- window = ventana
- ladder = escalera
- small = pequeño/pequeña
- sky = cielo
- trunk of the tree = tronco
- balcony = balcón
- to build = construir, edificar
- built = construida/construido
- built-in = empotrado/empotrada

OUR STORY

Signs of a Dead Farm - Signos de una granja muerta

Our new story begins in the small house built-in at the top of a big tree. The wooden house looks alone.

Its walls show some damages. Maybe it was the weather or its former inhabitants before they left the farm.

Next, an old plow remains abandoned. When was its last work on the farm? When was the last time this machine opened the soil to plant vegetables or grains?

Where are the potato or corn fields? Nothing around gives signs of agriculture activities.

Also near to the house without inhabitants and the abandoned plow, it is possible to see the rest of another tree, broken planks, other pieces of wood and trash.

Who really was the last inhabitant of this dead farm? Was a man or an animal?

Probably the wind was the last that shouted higher inside the small house removing the glasses of the window and damaging the wooden walls…

This dead farm is part of the hard reality. A lot of agriculture activities are declining everywhere despite the world claims for more food. Different economic and social factors push out the workers of the farms.

For example, in Driggs, Idaho the owners of the ground feel very enthusiastic about the idea to build more tourist resources next to the Teton Range where before all were farms and agriculture activities.
